I Am or I Am Not Spock

Last year for my birthday I was given a copy of Leonard Nimoy's first autobiography titled, "I Am Not Spock". I enjoyed reading it so much that I recently wondered what thoughts the rest of you that also got a chance to peruse it had. Indeed, I am also interested in what its follow-up "I Am Spock" is like. Sadly, I have not managed to find a copy in my local bookstores yet!

My own favourite bits were the ongoing battles about the shoddy treatment the studio gave the team and how when he jumped over to Mission Impossible Leonard felt liberated at being able to play a wealth of different roles in disguise than sticking to straight-laced Spock.

This may seem unrelated but it's not. What popped into my head after reading your post was a TV commercial that I just saw again today. It's BATMAN selling some kind of online investment scheme (1800-INVEST or some such).

Yes, I know his name is Adam West but like some many other people, I will always know him as BATMAN first and foremost. Nimoy and Shatner suffer that same fate. Alan Alda, for years, was Hawkeye Pierce. And who could ever forget the 'Fonz'? Mr. Henry Winkler. It's the price of fame and it doesn't just hit actors. Madonna had tried to change her music and image... It didn't work. Could you imagine Marilyn Mason singing country?

There are some who can successfully transmute, however, Kurt Russell went from goodie goodie disney kid roles to a main stream rough character roles. Cher went from gammy winning singer to oscar winning actress. Personally, I think she's a far better actress than she ever was at singing but that's just me. LL Cool J is another. As for transmutable music, The Eagles is a fine example. They are usually classified as easy listening but many of their tunes are far from easy listening.

So, Yeah. I'd be interested in everyone's opinion on Spock and more....

I have "I am Spock" and it is simply a refute of his attitude in his earlier book, where he, in essence, "got over it". He, as an actor, realized that any good actor puts a part of himself into his role, and as such, he really WAS Spock (or at least a good part of him). Having seen several inteviews and non-Trek interactions of his, I would have to agree. He is very Spock-like in RL.

Having played a Vulcan, in-sim, for many years, I understand his musings on the subject. I am also an actor, albeit an amature one, having appeared in various roles in over 70 productions, and can understand his though processes in, at first, not wanting to be identified as a certain role, and then later realizing that a piece of him is in every role. It cannot be otherwise.
