Last Week's Engineering Log

Engineering Log- "Repairs: Heat of the Moment"

Fighter Bay Engineering Team:

Ensign Alexander Ramirez

Assistant Engineer 2nd Class Robert Kelly

Assistant Engineer 1st Class Larry Moyer

Assistant Engineer 1st Class John Wyatt

Ensign Ramirez tenatively opened the fighter bay doors, and was immediately buffeted by fires throughout the compartment; his arms immediately reacting and shielding his face as he backed out into the hallway. He cleared the door's sensor area and they promptly shut; the fires dying out as they lost their source of fuel in the air.

"Kelly, Moyer, Wyatt- the fire supression systems in the fighter bay have been damaged. We need to get some fire supression equipment from the lockers down the hall- we have to get in there to stabilize the fighters so they don't take the ship with us. Kelly, Wyatt, you're on fire supression duty. Moyer, you're on the Griffin, I'll work on Wyvern- let's get these fighters battened down!"

The engineers broke and headed to the fire supression team lockers and suited up; Kelly and Wyatt manned the fire supression equipment, Moyer and Ramirez grabbing tools for fighter overhaul and stabilization.

Kelly and Wyatt were the first ones to the door, and when they approached the door, the fires raged once again, the flames licking through the door into the corridor. They fought the flames back into the bay, streams of foam and CO2 coating the superheated fuel and debris scattered throughout the bay. Moyer and Ramirez followed up behind, their flash suits ready in case a flashover occured while they were inside the bay. Over the dedicated comms inside the flash suits, Ramirez gave orders to Moyer to start with shutting down the power drives in the Griffin, and to stabilize the containment for the small amount of engine plasma in the engine.

Ramirez dodged a sparking power manifold which was laying on the ground between the two fighters, skirting some flaming debris on the side of the Wyvern's hull. Getting to the rear of the fighter, he attempted to get the door to automatically open, but the fighter took damage when it made the emergency docking procedure, sealing the door closed. Manually overriding the door, he worked the release mechanism until the door was open far enough to get inside.

The fires started to come under control due to Ensign Kelly and Wyatt's fire supression, and the bay was covered in a thick chemical foam, snuffing out what noticeable fire was left burning. Moyer moved into the Griffin's engine compartment, the door not being stuck due to the minor damage the fighter sustained as opposed to the Wyvern's decent damage it's superstructure sustained. He ran the auto-shutdown sequence for the fighter's engines and locked down the power manifolds, the plasma becoming inert and safely stowed in it's containment fields. Reporting a job complete to Ensign Ramirez, he started working on the minor damage the fighter sustained internally, knowing the fighters would need a decent overhaul at the next starbase.

Ramirez made it into the Wyvern and moved quickly amongst the scattered parts on the floor to the engine compartment, and found a couple of the panels blown out. Finding an accessable panel was nearly impossible until he was able to gain access to a repair console inside one of the bulkheads. Rerouting the main power relay configurations and engine statuses to the console, he was able to turn off the engines and power relays, but not without consequence. Forgetting to bleed the remaining power on the system resulted in the panel he was working on to erupt in a shower of sparks and flying metal, pelting his face-shield and flash-suit covered arms with hot molten computer panel.

If it wasn't for the suit, the damage to him could have been mortal, but the suit did it's job, catching the molten metal and plastic and melting it instead of his skin encapsulated inside. He yelped and jumped back in suprise, and sweared when he remembered he didn't bleed the power out of the system. Jumping to the other panel across the compartment in the other bulkhead, he finished shutting the power down after the excess was bled out explosively behind him. The sparks from the fried panel stopped sparking, and he got the plasma contained as he heard the all clear from Moyer.

He headed out of the fighter and met up with his team, who looked at him with a sense of incredulity and concern when they saw he was covered in now-solidifying metal and plastic.

"You ok there Ramirez? Looks like a panel exploded on you or something," Moyer mused.

"Something like that, Moyer. You guys are on overhaul, now that everything's under control, and Moyer- you're in charge. Report to me when the repairs are completed. I'm needed for repairs somewhere else on the ship."

Ensign Ramirez removed his flash suit, setting it just inside the fighter bay doors, and straightened his uniform, it a bit singed from the heat he was exposed to. He headed to the turbolift down to main engineering to get his next repair job.
