I pretty much understand everything except how ship assignments are made before the sim (like tactical, communications, engineering etc) Help me out?

Thanks!

Before the beginning of an academy one of the GMs running the game is going to ask for you to send them a private message (PM) with either one or two choice of position you would like to play. And Voila! you'll be posted to the academy roaster.

Cheers

The above is right for joining an academy sim. Once you graduate, the process is more complicated. You will be sent a list of ships by e-mail, what time they play, and what positions are open on each ship. You'll be asked for first and alternate choices. It's somewhat more complicated, but instructions are included.

It's the same for an academy as well, you may be asked your preference, but face it, we just can't accomodate 10 people all trying to sit in that one chair at Ops, so sometimes you may be placed elsewhere. At other times, it may be an 'all engineering sim' so everyone will be posted to engineering, or medical..whichever the plot needs. Other times, if you arrive late, and spots are filled, you may be placed where an open slot is needed filled, or you may find that the GM wants to see you playing somewhere other than the medical spot that you've requested the last 19 academies in a row, to see how you handle other situations.

Advanced sims, yes, often more involved. Some sims will only post bridge posts to incumbent players who have been around waiting for a spot to open, and some will place you where you might see a hole in roster that intrests you. Speak with the GM of that sim to find out.

Where ever you end up, have fun and enjoy!

It's good to try out a number of different positions to see what you enjoy the most. It's always good to have two or three in mind for the night so that, as Blu mentioned, the GMs can accommodate your request as best as possible. Showing up early can usually give you a better shot at the position you want for the night, but there aren't any guarantees. Academies are about learning how to sim, STSF-style, and about having fun.

Good luck and hope to see ya around!
