"A Day To Remember"

Alexander listened passively to the communique that the Admiral broadcast over the ship while he was meditating off-duty, something his mother taught him years ago during times of crisis.

<<Meditation>>

His mother visited often while he was a child, though the idea of a Romulan parent in the Federation was somewhat few and far between amongst families split down the faction line... a father in Starfleet and a mother in the Romulan Navy seemed an unlikely match. Though the animosity of the Romulans to the Federation and vice versa would surface often, his parents struggled to make a home and family for him as best they could. He would lay awake at nights on Romulus wondering when he'd get to see his father again, and on Earth wondering when he'd see his mother again. It was difficult for a kid to deal with having two separate worlds to attempt to mesh them together in order to find himself, where he saw himself fitting in. Taking some teachings of Romulan and Vulcan physiology and social behavior, as well as Federation standards and ideals, he found they conflicted less and less the older he grew.

This conflict that's arisen between the Federation and the Arcturans seems to be akin to what used to be what existed between the Federation and the Klingons or Romulans... a mutual distrust and inability to see eye-to-eye with each other. After what's transpired previously, where someone such as himself would have never been admitted to the Academy due to his ethnicity, and now he was admitted with open arms, the conflict seems more and more like a repeat of history than a new conflict. Eventually this will end with either a decisive victor, or again a war of attrition will wage on for years until supply lines will run short and both will decide peace is a better alternative.

It's a human lesson in history everyone should learn, "Those who fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it." This ancient adage from before the first starship was built, and the ideas of people on other planets being a mere fantasy, still applies even now in the days of high technology and interstellar diplomacy.

<<End>>

He rose from the cushion on the floor slowly, the lights still dim in his quarters. Candlelight flickered on the small end table in front of him, which he put out after a moment. He breathed deeply a couple times, remembering the way to end his meditation. Feeling refreshed and ready to take his station down in engineering, he strode over to his computer to document his thoughts before he would be expected. One thing he knew that his father, the first officer of the USS Nautilus, taught him, was that making log entries of his feelings and the like is a very good way to keep track of his feelings and his sense of duty, making sure he kept himself on track.

Adjusting his uniform imperceptibly, he tapped the computer to rouse it from power saving mode. "Computer. Begin log entry."

Computer> "Ready."

Alexander James Ramirez, Ensign

Engineering, Navigation and Control Systems Specialist

Stardate 51006.28

The Admiral just relayed some news about the Arcturan conflict that we are involved with. The slaughter of innocent scientists, though understanding basic tactics that a science outpost could be working on research into weapons and defensive technology, is still an atrocity that cannot be forgiven lightly. Without time to think deeper about the ramifications behind what has transpired, I understand the basics of what must be done, and I trust that our efforts in the field will not be for naught. I will be assuming my duty station shortly now that we are at battle stations, and the goal is clear. My duty will be fulfilled to the best of my ability and I will not falter in the responsibilities given to me here.

This shall be my first test of many on this ship, the Manticore. I will do my parents and myself proud, and to battle it is then... This shall be a day to remember.

Computer. Title Personal Log, "A Day To Remember", End and Save.

-=End of Log Entry=-

Computer> "File Saved."

Quickly checking himself to make sure he was ready for duty, he grabbed his utility belt with his tools for repairing and adjusting the navigational arrays and control systems, and left his quarters. He observed the battle-stations lights flashing with an imperceptive smile. "This shall be a day to remember, indeed." He mused under his breath while making his way to the main turbolift to Engineering, double-timing himself to make up for his thoroughness in preparing himself for the task at hand.
