I started this in case there were other Soccer/Futbol/Football fans here that are watching the World Cup. Maybe give us a place to chat about it.

I'm rooting for the Americans, of course, as I was raised here. However, being that I'm a first generation Mexican American, as well. I'm also rooting for El Tri as well. But if (and when :-P) the two of them meet in the finals, I'll root for the Americans.

Any other World Cup enthusiasts out there aside from me?

Germany's getting ready for the World Cup and I can't wait for it to start. I'm rooting for Germany of course but I'm not very optimistic what with all those last minute injuries and such.

Actually I think the US have a good chance of beating England in their first match...especially now that Rio Ferdinand's out with an injury. Algeria and Slovenia should not be underestimated though. We'll see how that goes.

It's gonna be tough for Mexico, though. It's gonna be difficult beating France even though they kinda suck.

Personally I think Spain's gonna get far...not sure about Brazil though they are always to be reckoned with. Same with Germany though this year they might well get eliminated in the quarter finals.

We wooped them Redcoats good before 234 years ago, 196 years ago, and we can do it again...

Well, luckily I don't have to work on Saturday, so I'll get to watch that. I do have a wedding to go to that evening, so I'll have very little time to turn on that after the game. . .I probably would have been able to sqeak out the 18th, but I'm putting in alot of overtime during the first part of the week, and I don't want to screw that up by taking a half day off. I'm screwed on the 23rd though. Luckily, my boss is fine with me streaming the games to my 'puter.

Its the French, what do you expect? They're only good at wine (mostly) and whining about keeping the status quo. Now, when England and the USA play, there's gonna be a battle royale.

Yeah, France did not look too good. . .Mexico did get a little screwed though. That goal that was disallowed by an offside call was a horrible call. There was a guy on the post a good 2 yards behind Vela.

Meanwhile, my wife thinks I'm crazy for waking up at 0700 to watch the Cup today.

3-2 USA today. . .mark it down.

Goals for Rooney and Lampard for England. . .

Altidore, Dempsey and Gomez score for the US.

Although I think Buddle starts, Gomez comes in mid 2nd half, and he's just gonna cause problems for Ledley King, who won't be able to handle his pace. I think Gomez should start for that very reason, though.

England scores in less than 4 minutes; not a good start Americans!

1-1! Sorry England, but your goalkeeper is useless! What a terrible goal

First I was depressed. . .Then I was excited. . .Then I was angry. . .Then I felt deflated. All in the span of 90 minutes

And what the heck happened to Germany? Did they forget they had a game today?

Actually the call was correct. There have to be two players of the defending team closer to the defending team's goal line at the time of the pass than the first player of the attacking team (unless the player who receives the ball is farther away from the goal line than the ball itself at the time of the pass or the ball is "passed" to him by a player of the defending team). Usually that's the goalkeeper and one of the defenders. In this case the goalkeeper had left the goal and there was just that one defender at the post closer to the goal line than Vela. So the ref was right to make the call.

Now, the third US goal, however, whole different story. I'm not impressed by the refs. But then that's always an annoyance, the FIFA only allows one or two refs from each country, which means a lot of very good ones have to stay home, while a lot of bad ones get to go.

And as far as Germany goes, 20 very strong minutes, the rest, ionno what happened there. No good blaming it on the ref either, as much as I'd like to. If all 4 defenders of the opposing team get booked in the first half then you need to make sure at least one of them gets sent off during the second. Oh well, could be worse, at least we're not France, or England.

FIFA is reviewing the referee's actions and calls from yesterday's game.

From Yahoo! Sports

JOHANNESBURG – The referee who disallowed a potential game-winning goal for the United States will face an expedited performance review from FIFA and is likely to be excluded from the rest of the World Cup, according to a FIFA source.

Koman Coulibaly from Mali disallowed Maurice Edu’s 86th-minute strike that would have given the USA a 3-2 lead over Slovenia at Ellis Park and likely would have led to a thrilling comeback victory Friday. Coulibaly appeared to rule that American midfielder Michael Bradley had impeded a Slovenian defender, even though video replays showed no infringement.

FIFA’s refereeing committee will review footage from the Group C clash on Saturday to evaluate Coulibaly’s performance after several USA players complained about the way he had struggled to control a fiercely contested match.

Every World Cup match is viewed live by an on-site assessor who monitors the referee’s performance. However, in this case, a deeper assessment will take place at the earliest possible opportunity. That this is happening so quickly suggests FIFA is taking the complaints about Coulibaly seriously and is likely to leave him unassigned to referee further matches, according to the source. He could still appear as a line judge or other supporting role.

“If he is found to have made a serious mistake, especially one that affected the outcome, then he would be highly unlikely to play any further part in the tournament,” said the source, who is close to senior figures on the refereeing panel. “FIFA is determined to keep refereeing standards high and does not want high-profile mistakes.”

Coulibaly came under heavy criticism from the U.S. team and head coach Bob Bradley, but it was not just the Edu no-goal that will come under scrutiny.

Assessors also are likely to be concerned at the highly physical nature of the match. American striker Jozy Altidore was repeatedly involved in tussles with the Slovenian defense, and an ugly incident took place midway through the second half when Slovenia’s Marko Suler appeared to throw Altidore to the ground. Coulibaly issued Suler a yellow card, but the strong infraction was enough for a red card and an ejection.

FIFA chooses its referees and assistants for each game from a list of elite officials specially selected for the tournament. They are evaluated before the World Cup to ensure that they meet standards of fitness and knowledge.

Coulibaly’s mistake will only increase calls for the introduction of instant replay for controversial decisions, something FIFA has strongly resisted up to this point.

“It is up to FIFA for what they do about him,” USA star Clint Dempsey said. “But it wasn’t just the goal. They were holding and pushing and grabbing and putting themselves in there. What are you supposed to do?”

Portugal 7, North Korea 0. Jaysus. Any bets on the North Korean team attempting to defect?

Finally they're scoring goals. The North Koreans didn't actually play all that badly, at least not in the first half. What's funny, however, is that they actually seemed to believe they had a chance of winning the cup, or rather, they were forced to say they believed.

Hmm, with the way Chile's going they won't finish with 11 players on the pitch.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Spain will do tonight. And of course whether all French players will make it home alive, sounds like they're at each other's throats. This has to be one of the funniest World Cups ever.

I just about had a heart attack during that game. . .If you look at the draw now, the US has a pretty decent draw for them. As opposed to playing Germany and potentially Argentina in the two rounds. It going to be Ghana in the second round and the winner of Uruguay and South Korea in the Quarters. Granted all three of those teams are good, they aren't on the level of Germany and/or Argentina though.

As it sits, its not too crazy to say that the US has a legit chance to make it to the semis. At this point, it looks like we'd end up playing either the Dutch or the Brazilians in the semis, but who knows, anything can happen at that point.

Let's just get through Ghana first, though. :-)

Arrividerci Italia!

Edit: 2-1, almost 2-2 but disallowed. Looks like I spoke too soon, Italy still has a chance!

Edit 2: Good effort on Italy's part. Great ending to a great game

Ahhh, now that Italy match was funny, especially since it means they finished last in their group right behind football heavy weights such as Paraguay, Slovakia and New Zealand... so funny.

A. Mazing. For the first time ever, both finalists from the previous tournament fail to make it out of the group stage. Italy tries and fails, and France just...fails. Repeatedly.

It'll be interesting to see what, if any, changes are made, and how qualifying for Euro 2012 shakes out.
