Star Trek:Pheonix

For those that enjoy fan films, the first episode of Star Trek: Pheonix is now available online. If you like future Trek then you might like this. It's set 25 years after Romulus is destroyed. The Romulans now rule their empire from a planet named Rihannsu (at least a nod to the Rihannsu books, but no other indication yet that they will be using that history/culture). While the Pheonix's main mission seems to be ambassadorial missions between the Federation and other worlds (there's a bunch of Ambassadors on board at all times) the first episode is a mix of character intro flashbacks and away team phaser fight.

The starship is pretty cool looking. The swirly patterned computer interfaces are a little odd but I like the 3D interface they use in their new transporter rooms. The fight scenes are bad but otherwise the acting isn't that bad. All the actors look like they'd actually pass a Starfleet fitness exam. They were trying to introduce characters and new tech so I'll hold judgment for how thought out the plot actually is. The snarky doctor and the Federation ambassador who is Romulan but has adopted Vulcan beliefs will be the characters to watch.

If I may so bold, the term is Phoenix. It's 'oe' not 'eo'. I know, like most things in the English language, it's an acception to the rules! LOL

As for the storyline, it sounds interesting however I am not sure that THAT universe will continue, meaning that I believe the fan-base will much prefer to follow the new Universe with the young crew of the Enterprise. BUT, who knows?

I've not seen much evidence of a surge of Abrams-Trek fans. While many retro Trekkies (and I choose my terms knowingly) seem to have enjoyed the new film, they seem to accept it on its own alternative-timeline merits without being willing to jettison 40+ years of continuity.

I think this is reflected in the make-up of STSF, as well. We have a Star Trek 11-based sim in Commanche Creek, but many more from the post-TNG/DS9/VOY eras, and a couple TOS. And we have alternate future ones in Qob and Agincourt, reflecting those interests.

This isn't to judge the relative merits or quality of the various eras, but I think "fan fiction" in its various forms (like simming, internet boards, web sites, fanzines) seems to flourish in better established worlds. There are exceptions, of course (Firefly comes to mind), but I think it's notable that Pocket Books hasn't slated any Abramsverse stories for the near future. The "new" fans may not have latched on for the ride yet, although the returning "old" fans seem to be returning to what they remember. (I know I went out and bought the whole Blueray ST:TOS series after seeing ST11.)

If ST:Phoenix plans to make more episodes, this old Trek fan will probably watch them...

I think you mean an "exception."

Sounds like an interesting bit of fanfic, Jorahl -- I'll have to check it out. (Quite a large zip file for download; I'll have to grab it later) Judging by their website, looks like they put a lot of work into it, so that's promising.

I agree with Sorehl, ABRAMS did much to bring a NEW young undiscovered Generation in to the fold... But I'm hardly gonna drop the previous canon that I've devoted so much time in my life to...

Not to mention the endless heroworship it inspired :)

Star Trek: Phoenix being the subject here however, I am intrigued and will undoubtedly give it a look... But I'm not expecting too much... so I won't get my hopes up to be let down by shotty acting poor visuals and horrible attempts to copy previous character behaviours.

That being said... Enjoy at your own risk.

Fans:

I hope that my comments were not misleading. Mr. Sorehl, Mr. Andrews, I agree with you both in that the fan-base of TNG (et al) is much larger and many will not simply abandon there fantasy for some new REBOOT. This fan-base, however, exist for a different reason (I believe) than the original ideolistic TOS fans. They grew up in a completely different world than 'we' did. There is most definitely a generation gap; a differing value system.

When TNG came out, I felt like I was reborn. I followed it religiously never missing an episode. But as I have expressed before, my following (as did many others') slowly waned with the follow-on seres' that arose. This phenomenon is not true for those fans who were born from TNG, as many of you here have expressed.

Abrams' reboot, for me, has breathed new live into the old theme and ideology. I hope that it continues with a focus on discovering new life & new civlizations for that's what the STAR TREK is all about.

I, too, have digressed and will check out STAR TREK:Phoenix further.

P.S. Thanks Sam... I do that all of the time! Someone needs to proof-read my stuff before I send it to print! LOL

This Star Trek: Phoenix is going to be an Online Series... hmm

OK I'm watching the Cloak and Dagger episode... The acting is next to HORRIBLE... I swear I've shot better actors in my basement... and I can prove that on Youtube.

I try to support any and ALL Trek incarnations but aside from obviously having some money in this... they could have used a good casting director... sheesh.

Oh, you want HORRIBLE acting go check out Star Trek: Hidden Frontier, the early seasons. And brace yourself for their attempt at a Tellerite, "Pig Boy" sent me into an hour of uncontrollable laughter. There's also ST: Osiris, bad acting and horrible dialog... I've been unable to subject my brain to the entire part 2 of that one. So, when I said the acting wasn't bad that was considering other Fan Film attempts.

Make sure to check out the mini-episodes of Phoenix. The one with the doctor and one with the ambassador are well acted and interesting, in my opinion.

I'm not trying to debate you Jorahl we all have our own tastes... but the Doctor and the Vulcan are the two I hate most... they're poor copies of multiple previous characters... The doctor is Julian Bashir and McCoy's love child with a case of bad puns... and the Vulcan is... Tuvok on his worst day... yeesh...

On another note I'm just now going through the Original Series from start to finish... that's right TOS from the first pilot with Chris Pike and Emotional Spock and now to the poor choice of Shatner Voiceovers at random times :) live long and prosper all hahaha

I'm not trying to debate...

Isn't this one of those phrases that can never be used correctly, like "Here's a man who needs no introduction" or "it goes without saying"?

So, since I must admit I am trying to debate, I'd have to say the Romulan is the best acted character and above all, he LOOKS the part. I could see him plucked out of this group and showing up in a Trek movie. I liked the doctor, but they could scale back the "Colonel O'Neill" like quips just a little. The others did fine, certainly better than the first season of TNG; if they keep going, they may ease into their lines and technobabble. But they need to find some way to avoid making every conversation a drama scene - again, time will tell.

Best I've seen since Phase II. Good find, Jorahl.
