Star Trek Online

Alright, Andy see's that at Best Buy Star Trek Online is $30. Now I am already playing WoW, and I am just wondering if for ONE Month (I am trying before committing) it's worth $30? How good is this game?

Wow, $30.00. I saw it at Walmart a week ago for $50.00. I need to tell hubby about this. Thank you. :P

I would also love to hear reviews of the game. We have been playing Star Wars Galaxies for years, him more than me. :)

REVIEW:

I have been playing STO since it's inception, I find it a very promising game. It's space battle mechanics and the wide range of abilities and specialties to chose from keep it fresh. However, it is what it is... it's new, it's still growing, it's got a long way to go. The thing about it is... It will be great so long as people can stick with it. They've already made leaps and bounds with their improvements, and they have many grand additions in store. Missions feel like episodes, but as you go further and you reach a point where patrols and explore missions are your only source of development, it begins to become a tad monotonous.

I encourage everyone to try it out... I would caution however, not to spend money on more than one month of subscriptions until you've tried it...

The first 30 days comes with the game... I say take that, then see for yourself. for more info on ships, classes, abilities, and things to come... visit www.startrekonline.com

Andy:

I ventured over to STO to find out what they had. I was very disappointed. I guess its what ever you're into. In my opinion, STAR TREK was NEVER about war and battles and 'let's see how many aliens we can kill' points. Here, my friend, I believe you can explore what Mr. Roddenberry had intended, a wagon trail to the stars. In the end it is your choice. We hope you find this place appealing...

As Dash pointed out, they are improving on the game, adding more content, etc. It's not all pew pew. I mean there is quite a bit, but it is slowly evolving. There is also some great stories in it as well. Even some good moral issues involving the Federation and how it goes aboutit's foreign policies. I really can't wait till the klingon story content. Then it looks like Romulans are not far off from there. :)

Overall, I think it's something you should check out and see if you like it for yourself. Opinions can vary drastically when it comes to choosing a new game. Just decides on tastes.

Kairi:

Love your 'pew pew'! (LMOA)

You have definitely made some good points.

I know that I'm not supposed to ellicit anyone, however, I AM working on the SIM tools that will make this experience much more realistic and interactive. So, if you're a programmer and are interested then please contact me via PM.

So, now that the free trial gives you unlimited play time...

Would there be any interest in roleplaying on the space station they let you visit? I have zero interest in purchasing this game, but I've been roleplaying in MMOs since I was 12 or so, and I think it can be a lot of fun. Again, I don't have any interest in buying the game (at least, as it is right now), but I'd definitely be down for roleplaying as the crew aboard that station, and letting the fun commence.

Thoughts?

HAHA... That would be cool Caelan... But unfortunately not everyone could d/l the client and you have to play through the tutorial to get to the station to... not to mention station chat is ate up with Spammers. However, one day they're going to bring GUILD bases in to STO and then we should really consider simming on our own private AEGIS base...

NOT TO MENTION for all you SHIP based simmers... YOU CAN SIM ON YOUR BRIDGE!!!! Just invite all members of the sim to visit your bridge... and you can stand at your stations and so on... Quite the added visual appeal... :)

Unfortunately, STO has some rather serious downsides, in my opinion. For one, the Klingon content is not merely negligible, it's insulting. There is -no- PVE content for the Klingons to speak of. No real story that you play through on their side either. Sector space, which is how you travel between planets is...tedious, but also something you can't just click and walk away from, lest you get pulled into a random encounter based on the auto-pilot. Further, the entire things is instanced. It is designed so that you will -never- under any circumstance have more than fifty people in a single instance. Sure, you can hear people talking in the other instances of the area you're in, but you can't actually get more than the max number in that instance at once. This, of course, also seriously destroys any value major hubs have as hang out points.

Speaking of the instances, there's another problem with them. Essentially, aside from the major hubs, you can't revisit areas. You get a mission, you go there, you complete it, it's gone. Last but not least is the problems with combat itself. It's...dull and repetitive, even for a MMO. Most of the time, the only strategy there is to the game is button spam. Hit 'em 'till shields drop, then hit 'em some more.

I won't deny, the story sounds interesting when I read it, but the execution is....severly lacking. Considering what they've done with the Klingons as a playable faction, I'm torn between the desire to have a MMO in which to be a Romulan and a desperate desire not to have them so underdeveloped and misutilized as the playable content for the Klingons currently is.

In short, it is my opinion that the game is probably a good bit of fun for nostalgia, thanks to continuity nods, but probably not for anyone that's looking for a MMO to occupy their time with for a while.

Stricly my two latinum on the subject, though.
