USS Kelvin Pix

40 posts in this topic
Hey Precip!

To add to Scooter's comments: we're pretty much hoping for some sort of official CBS/franchise hard copy about the USS Kelvin specs, pics and dimensions, the shuttles, and all that good stuff. I'm a huge fan of the eye candy work that Mr. Richter is doing for the Kelvin.

I also thank the Mighty Keeper of the Bridge Commander Game; Scooter keeps us in BC Kelvin pics!

This sounds kind of obvious (since the ship was chosen as the template for the 'Creek) but I think the USS Kelvin is just an awesome canon entry into the Trek world, and it's pretty darn unique with the one nacelle/hanger bay combination.

I like the 'Old School' design connection with the 1970's/1980's Franz Joseph USS Saladin, and I'll be straight honest when I say it's nice to see a canon design entry that doesn't have the twin/triple/quadruple nacelle thing going on. Nice change of pace is all, and perfect for a border patrol vessel!

I'd say a BP ship is probably the perfect fit for the Kelvin. The whole twin-nacelle design is supposed to make it easier to balance the warp field bubble around the ship (in-universe, anyway; the rest of it was just Gene's starship design guidelines, he wanted symmetry), thereby making it easier to zoom along at a good clip. But a BP ship will have it's little section to maintain and for the most part toodle around at low speed so zoom really isn't on the list of things it needs to be able to do well.

As for the size...

We have 44 fighters in the bay, 11 shuttles, and a hopper and a troop transport, probably some heavy-duty EVA packs. The big boys would obviously have a parking spot on the deck while you'd expect the fighters and shuttles would be efficiently stacked in cubbyholes along the side of the length of the hangar pylon.

The attached file, a very simple mock-up I made using the specs provided by Crash for the various vehicles on board, shows how much space is needed just for that possible stacked configuration, let alone the extra meters required for the physical structure, a maintenance area, etc etc etc. It could be perhaps stacked one higher, however that would make the height of the hangar bay a little lopsided for what I would consider for the overall height of the ship. In any case there's a lot of room needed just to fit the buggering things in, let alone have room to operate them and get them out. Translate the hangar to the rest of the ship, and yes, she's a big girl. (Big boned, not fat ;) )

Oooo! More graphic shiny's! Thanks Basement Cat.

The Troop Transport Mule and Cargo/Patrol Hopper are concepts I had rolled with, though Scooter provided the specs for the new Hornets/Tomcats. Keep all the shiny images and specs coming Folks.

Thanks for your responses to a noncrewmember.

JJVerse Kelvin Class was never displayed next to its JJVerse Enterprise which has now apparently assumed titanic proportions. Maybe if the ships in the next movie are shown together in a scene we would see the Kelvin slightly smaller.

The JJVerse Federation ships size would benefit your vessel. You seem to have a great attention to using a fighter wing. Not including other assorted ships.

You'd have all the deck space you need!

Nonetheless, all the artwork shown in this thread just makes the JJVerse scaling an absurd..if they had only thought about the shuttle evac scenes before they CGId the ship.

Oh and by the way...I still wish you'd add those little pop up guns on the saucer. Great anti-fighter defense. One of things I really liked about the Kelvin which TNG era craft never bothered with.

-Woah..I just told you to change your ship when I am not even simming on it. Shame on me!

Who says we didn't add the phaser CIWS systems of the movie? ;)

Considering we did. Don't forget to check out the ship's specifications.

Being so evil that I am, I'd suggest describing the CIWS a slightly different way.

One (whatever type CIWS) defense system? (#mounts) Dorsal, (#mounts Ventral)

I must confess though, I only saw one or two pix that even give the little pepper guns credit. So I guess you all would decide if you have any mounts on the engine or Deflector/FLight deck. Which would make sense to me.

I love how on the Ships of the Line image Tobias very subtley hints at a larger Kelvin , than in his previous artwork. I of course may be reading to much into the picture but he goes away from the usual TMP saucer viewports on the saucer to different shaped ones, and different placements suggesting a thicker saucer section . The more size the merrier. Especially if you are an aircraft carrier...err..spacefighter carrier.

Unable to find a shot I am referring to Probably since its copywritten . If you own the calendar you can judge my sanity.

Mr. Richter is definitely changing up the shot angle, using the back shot and angling the Kelvin to showcase the size of the saucer section. I like it! As for finding a photo of the Kelvin in the 2011 calendar, I agree Precip - it's going to be hard copyright wise.

Found this interpretation wallpaper on the Trek BBS boards - rendezvous between Old School Enterprise & Original Era Kelvin. Planetary photo credit to Nasa's Hubble telescope. Wallpaper and design credit goes to a digital artist by the name of "Madman1701A". Enjoy Folks!

Not quite a Kelvin...but more a "Blast from Scooter's Past" with the old Goshawk fighter; Scooter in an orbital power dive for WGR (Warren Grove Bombing Range):
