“Minds Do Not Sit Still”

Log Series Part VI

Garnoopy stepped into engineering with his mind racing. The Romulans had sent torpedoes after them and they were gaining. The possibility that two small torpedoes could keep up with the Manticore going Warp 9.975 was startling, especially for this length of time. The technological advancement of those two items must have been high for nothing in the Manticore could match that.

The new warp drive couplings came online easily. They would allow the Manticore to have her maximum warp speed for over two hours longer than was normal.

Despite the Manticore speeding along the two destructive weapons were catching up. Garnoopy was giving the helmsman every piece of power he had. There was nothing more he could give. It was up to tactical to keep them alive. Knowing the Manticore’s tactical officer however reassured Garnoopy that the Manticore would be fine.

He sighed and leaned against the pool table in engineering. His mind began to use its imagination.

“No foul play is suspected at this time” the communiqué had stated. The IKC Qob-Lakota had been on the Romulan Neutral Zone. It was only natural to suspect the Romulans, especially with a combined Klingon/Federation ship as the IKC Qob-Lakota was. Could the Romulans have destroyed the Lakota and killed his brother? Was Garnoopy witnessing the same situation that his brother had last seen? He could have been sickbay fighting to keep people alive as the Romulans delivered their last volley of torpedoes, ripping the Lakota in half and killing all aboard. All his brother would have been trying to do is save a life.

He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He couldn’t let his mind wander like this, especially when the Manticore was in danger. He had a duty to do and he would do it.

The comm. chirped and Garnoopy heard Colonel Eason call out that the ship was going to do an emergency stop. He knew what that meant and he rerouted power to inertial dampeners then grabbed a panel to hang on. A Nebula class starship did not stop on a dime and if it did the forward momentum, despite inertial dampeners would throw every single person onboard straight into a wall.

The ship hit an emergency stop and sparks flew in engineering. A panel shorted out and Garnoopy looked over to see Ensign McFly soar straight over the pool table. Almost in slow motion Garnoopy watched as the Ensign let out a “Weeeeeeee”.

After they finished slamming to a halt Garnoopy instantly ripped the emergency med kit from under his panel. He slapped his comm. badge and cried out “Medical emergency, engineering!”

McFly was leaning against the primary warp core and Garnoopy ran over pulling out his tricorder. His knowledge into the medical field was slim at best. It was his brother who was the expert. A pang of fury at the Romulans hit him as this thought passed through his mind but Garnoopy shoved it aside and looked at the medical tricorder readings of McFly. The tricorder said a bone was broken but Garnoopy couldn’t interpret the stupid thing. He had no idea what bloody bone was broken.

Hopefully a medical team would arrive soon because Garnoopy might be able to duct tape a warp core to perfection but mending a broken bone wouldn’t happen under his care.

sorry sir, duct tape?

What?!?! You don't know about duct tape?!?! What on EARTH are they teaching Cadets these days at the Academies! I'm going straight to Admiral Atragon . . . no Cadet should be allowed to graduate the Academy without the basic knowlage of how duct tape is used on Federation star ships! This is an outrage! I demand to know what is going on in the Academies!

For now, you and I are going to have to have a talk on Monday Ensign.
