Greetings

Hello, and well met.

I'm Scroll, and I'm new around here. Just being polite, and saying hello. I'm pretty impressed, thus far. Looking forward to meeting you all, and possibly RPing with you.

I've had my share of experience roleplaying, in both tabletop and online formats, system and freeform. I am however, new to RPing in the Trek universe, so I'll probably be taking my time, doing my research, and just enjoying myself. A quick question on your canon here, if I may? You're in the main ST universe (no Abram's alternate), and the novels are NOT considered canon? Just clarifying where things stand, from a fluff-based point of view. Thanks in advance.

First off let me welcome you to STSF.net, and now to your question, of course I'm no authority. Actually we have several different simms that are set in several different timelines... There is a Sim set in Abram's film's timeline <Comanche Creek>, and as far as I'm concerned if it's a Star Trek Novel... it's Canon.

Unless Shatner wrote it, then it's just frakkin crazy.

The USS Hood: is set in The Original Series Timeline

Agincourt and Arcaidia and others: Next Gen Timeline

The Challenger: Is set in Star Trek Enterprise timeline

And so on.

Hill there Scroll and welcome to STSF! I'm sure you'll find that we're a friendly group here and we look forward to seeing you in an Academy sometime soon. Our community caters to a wide variety of Trek fans. We have some players who grew up with TOS and others who are brand new to Trek because of the recent Abram's version. Most here tend to use the novels for ideas, but not consider them canon. TAS' canonicity is also the subject of debates. Ultimately, each individual sim makes a decision on what is canon to them and what becomes canon within the sim itself.

For instance the Romulan sim, RES Talon, has been operating for over a decade. In that time, they have developed an expansive Romulan universe drawing upon canon and ideas from some of the novels. When Nemesis came out, however, it conflicted with the universe that they had played in for so long, so they chose to continue as if Nemesis had not been released.

The USS Agincourt sim, a future reality sim, considers Nemesis to be canon and draws off of those political ramifications.

The newest STSF sim, the USS Comanche Creek, is currently simming in Abram's universe.

There are several traditional sims, as well that stick pretty close to established canon.

I would recommend contacting the individual GM about what they view as canon in their sim prior to joining. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Welcome to STSF, Scrollreader.

Grom pretty much covered it -- STSF's got a wide variety of types of games, some of which deal with certain parts of canon a little differently, and the individual GMs of each game will be able to tell you more about their game's approach.

I look forward to seeing you around the academies! <_<

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I appear to have already blundered, however. Should I recreate an account under a character name, rather than my generic web persona? Or does the chat support renaming in the vein of IRC?

I'd not worry that it's a blunder. Once you're posted to an Advanced Sim, and have posted a bio, your fellow players will know who you are talking too. As an example, STSF_Scooter (another of the GMs) uses Audraya Wesley as her character's name and "Scooter" as a callsign.
