Captain's Personal Log

Stardate 0307.12

Captain Frederic Meve

It had been no more than an hour since Meve's soon to be new "Chief Science Officer" had left his office. The Andorian sighed and leaned back in his chair, taking a sip of the beverage in front of him. He was still angry, annoyed and simply could not comprehend the orders he had been given. Yet, from all accounts, it seemed the person he had been ordered to accommodate was equally as annoyed as Frederic.

When the Captain had spoken to Fleet Admiral D'runi, he had understood that a Cardassian official would be brought aboard Aegis. In many ways it made sense, given their continued presence in the system it would probably go a long way towards ending many Cardassian's feelings that the Allied forces were still occupational forces. That didn't mean the Andorian had to like it. Yet, a several days later, he had gotten the orders. Not only was the Cardassian coming to Aegis a civilian, but he was to be put in charge of an entire department!

Starfleet officers taking orders from a civilian? Though what Meve had told Zog Gabrel about individuals following orders from whoever, the Cardassian had made a point. A non-Starfleet Ferengi had been in charge of constructing the station, but he hadn't been involved in it's daily operations. Given the expression of shock Gabrel had shown, the Andorian knew he had not been fully briefed on his new assignment either. Perhaps anticipating a job dealing with a small arena of scientific study, the Cardassian scientists hadn't contemplated he would be in charge of the entire Department of Science.

In several respects, Meve felt sorry for the man. From his perspective, this assignment was probably the Cardassian's way of putting him into exile. Perhaps it was some type of punishment, from their view, for the incorrect assumption about Cardassia Prime's planetary core exploding. On top of it all, the man who had probably never had to work closely with non-Cardassians before was not only going to be working with all types of people, but in charge of many of them.

Meve shook his head one more time and exited his office, carrying a small duffle bag type container on his right shoulder. "Mr. Mogg, alert Vice-Admiral Terio I will be departing within the next few minutes and should be at Starbase 384 within a few hours," the Andorian said as he walked towards a turbolift. Requesting the appropriate level, Frederic sighed again as he shook his head.

On top of everything else, Meve would not even be here for the first few days of this Cardassian's presence. Although Starfleet's final seal of approval, giving Gabrel proper authorizations, had not come through yet, it was only logical to assume they would arrive within a week. In some respects it didn't matter, the Andorian thought, as this issue would be one of many discussed at Starbase 384 where he was certain his career would come to an end.

After all, it was not every day the Vice-Admiral in charge of one-eighth of the Alpha Quadrant called you to a meeting. Meve was relatively certain Gabrel would be a topic of discussion, but was equally certain the large issue of Cardassia Prime's evacuation would be center stage. As the Cardassian scientist had arrived at his view of exile, the Andorian was certain he was about to get orders to move to his. What else do you do to a Captain who evacuates several billion people from a planet only to find there was no reason to?
