new and adjusting

HELLO forum!

i have unfortunately not simmed since i was very young, at sites that were not up to par with this one.

it's kind of intimidating, but not any less fascinating. i have been reading logs here and there and i'm still rather confused on how in the world i'm going to learn the technobabble and other things necessary to be a part of what's happening here.

but i thought, at least, instead of just being a ghost and trying to catch up on how this all works, and what i need to know-

that i would introduce myself, as being involved somewhat in the forum might encourage a faster process on my part to understand.

just please don't put me in a red shirt and beam me down with the captain, i don't want to die...

::clears throat::

Welcome!

Two things to remember: 1) Any Academy hosted by STSF N'Dak is a guaranteed suicide mission [And that's a direct quote from his signature]. 2) Never compare the GMs to Captains Bligh or Queeg if you want to get graduate sometime before the turn of the century.

That being said, I'd recommend reading: How to sim, as well as: Tips from the Moose

For all your technobabble needs, visit Memory Alpha or Ex Astris Scientia.

Academy times are listed ET, so adjust as appropriate for your timezone. Academies are mandatory, and everyone is human. Save your character development for your Advanced Ship. Minimum graduation time is 3 Academies, but don't expect to graduate that quickly; the host teams prefer to see how are over a longer span of time. And once you are posted to your first Advanced Sim, it's strongly recommended that any ideas that go outside Trek canon be approved by your host team.

Welcome to STSF, Oreides!

First off, don't be intimidated, especially about learning technobabble. They call it "babble" for a reason - some are better at making up high-falutin words than others, but it's still babble!

Secondly, feel free to browse the chat rooms, watch an academy or an advanced game until you feel comfortable. But the best way to break the ice is to just jump in and type. Academies are learning experiences - we don't expect you to know it all when you first come in. Most of us are still learning (hopefully I'm past the basics by now).

What do we look for? As Marx suggested, read the "Getting Started" section and the "Tips". Biggest thing - follow action statements and follow the chain of command. Get that down and the rest falls into place.

Look forward to seeing you in the academy!

Welcome to STSF, oreides!

We have training games (Academies) every night (well, during the day on Sundays) to help new players get acclimated to how everything works here, so feel free to stop on by to any of them, and feel free to ask around when you have any questions. The GMs will be glad to help you get settled. The schedule for the academies is at http://www.stsf.net/schedule.php

I look forward to seeing you in the acads! <_<
