"Hydroponics Musings"

Every time, it seemed, that Fiona jokingly thought to herself that she wasn't getting paid enough, something came along to make her realize that things were... only bound to get worse.

She took a bit of department head's privilege on this particular afternoon, getting a new raktajino to caffeinate her current headache out of existence (if only all of them were that easy) and take it down to the hydroponics bay that Science had taken over -- and where Fiona had set up "medical's corner".

Granted, it was much more "Fiona's Garden" than Medical's -- the doctor hadn't really seen fit to include her staff on what was really one of her own, pet projects: the cultivation of a multitude of poisonous (and in one case, venomous) plants from various worlds both in and out of the Federation. The project, of course, was given some title that reflected the fact that most such species possessed curative properties in controlled doses. Those might not really have been the aspects in which Weber was most interested, but it looked better than the reality, and got it past the red tape much easier.

Besides, her little Corner of Death, as she rather sardonically thought of it, was a nice little spot for Fiona to destress when her life dealing with... paper-cutted, inebriated ensigns -- or cadets -- and contraceptively-illiterate engineers... took its toll on her. Whether or not her surroundings were lethal, they were still green (mostly) and refreshing. And, being a "research spot", she didn't have to worry about crewmen stumbling across her and taking the opportunity to ask about that odd itch in an odder location. Being out of the way certainly had its benefits.

Fiona took a deep breath of refreshing air, smiling slightly. Of course, because there were poisonous things at ground-level, there also were no children. And that certainly was a relief. Gods. She shouldn't have reminded herself...

What would possess two supposedly rational beings to produce a second child? Everybody had their share of mistakes, Fiona allowed, magnanimously, that could result in a first, but two? It took some effort to be that naïve. She only hoped that the command team would answer her prayers -- er, request -- to get an obstetrician assigned to the ship. Among many other things, none of which included prenatal pediatrics, Fiona was a medical researcher, she complained to herself, not a midwife. The whole business made her head hurt.

Sipping deeply of the raktajino, Fiona closed her eyes, letting the occasional hiss of the hydration units and pleasant surroundings overcome her foul mood... for the moment.
