Random bit of related news.

 

A novel for the New TOS timeline is set to debut at some point in the future: More Beautiful Then Death by David Mack. I'm not sure if this is part of a series or what have you. I'm sure Capt. Calestorm and her crew will be interested in this.

 

Now...the question is...if you read any New Timeline TOS novels - which TOS crew will you *really* picture in your minds eye?

I believe I would see the new actors.

Mostly because they are actually different people. Same personality trates but life makes us who we are to certin point. Both spock and kirk had life changing events happen in their lives so you can't expect them to be the exact same people.

T,ashaya-the new actors are great....they did a great job on picking the cast...Chris Pine as Kirk<WOW> Zachary Quinto<He looks like Nimoy al little-ninoy picked him as Spock>Karl Urban<Blew my mind it was Mccoy/deforest/karl.s version of MCCOY> Zoe Saldana<It was Uhura that gave spock gutts to be on the enterprise>Anton Yelchin<For a young actor wow it was Chekov that knew his stuff>John Cho<Sulu well he can fly the ship>Simon Pegg<Scotty with well additude>....They even had James Doohan <Son>as Scotty assistant.....Bruce Greenwood<Pike>Interesting capt--i could go on cant want till 2012

Am I the only one that doesn't feel comfortable with this "new timeline"? I'm not a purist by any stretch of the imagination, but at the same time, when I watched the movie, all I could picture was J.J Abrams flashing the double bird to everybody at a Trek convention, or something similar.

 

This may be my anti J.J Abrams coming out, because I have not been a fan of -any- of his work. Its not that I dislike him or have some sort of nasty opinion of him as a person or a writer/director/producer either. I guess I just don't understand his views. Not just on Star Trek, but on his other stuff too that has been wildly popular. I realize that I am in the minority, but his stuff is not my bag I guess.

No, JJ - you are not the only one disturbed by this new timeline. You are also not the only one disturbed about the megalithic structure of the movie. While I can sit down and enjoy this new movie, it is also true that between story & interpretation of physics there's a dozen holes large enough to fly a starfleet through width-wise.

 

The characters: either comical or satirical. Only Sulu could really be taken seriously. Kirk being made a captain straight out of the academy, after all the BS he pulled? They're all interesting characters in their own right, but to enjoy this movie one has to take every established notion about Starfleet and stuff it in the in-sink-erator.

 

Add to that the sets that were either too flashy or too much like an industrial brewery, and what do you have? It's great action-cinema and quite theatrical, but is it good Star Trek?

 

My feelings regarding the film, of course, have no bearing on my views regarding Comanche Creek. The movie is the movie, the Sim is a sim based in the Movie universe ... two totally different things.

Ahhh, you must have watched the "Making of" documentaries on the DVD/BluRay. Yes, they DID film the engine room scenes in a Budweiser brewery, hence the product placement when Uhura orders a "Budweiser classic" in the Riverside bar.

As for the Comanche Creek and the new time line, the Sim is to be considered sort of/kind of separate from the New TOS timeline.

 

...odd statement coming from the CO, isn't it? The Sim is obviously set in the New time line established by the 2009 movie, yet the fact of the matter is that the 'Creek is a STSF Sim.

 

All the Sims here make our own simming content.

Fully understandable Cael, as we had to do the same thing with Nemesis, and put on our boards that we follow 'pre-Nemesis' timelines. Mainly, because we had already been simming for over 10 years with the background we had known in Trek for 35 years before that movie came out, and suddenly, half our history, backstory and heck...even one of our planets was uninhabitable, my homeworld ch'Havran now a barren ball of dilitium?!

 

We make due with what we have, and keep true to what we can. But from there, we move our sims as our crews take us as well.....

I agree I did not think Uhura was well writen. I know that the Spock/Uhura situation had been touched on before but I didn't like it before not sure why they decided to play on it in the movie. I would have rather seen them play off the Spock/Nurse Chapel relationship.

In this day and age of the new film, Saldana's Uhuru should have been way more then the "little" communications officer staying on the ship and off the away teams, with NO disrespect intended towards Nichele Nichols. I'd like to see Saldana's Uhuru lead some sort of AT in the upcoming film.

 

Granted, she was given the bridge spot due to being able to speak the three Rihan dialects, there was the scene at the academy where she was telling the roomie about the strange signal coming from Klingon space, and the departing shuttle scenes where she gave Spock what for, reiterating her qualifications. The '09 film did touch on Uhuru's chosen career as a comm officer, more the the 60's series and 80's movies ever did.

 

...short little miniskirt uniform? Really? Still? Has no sleeve protection either. Get the woman. Trousers. And the standard female uniform tunic. There were female crew wearing them on the new Enterprise!!

 

And going with the uniform semi-rant, I'm still impressed that at no time during the film, did Chris Pine's Kirk end up wearing a torn tunic. ::applause::

As for the two basketball players? Didn't even know about that; I was thinking of other athletes in the news recently, either admitting pharmaceutical use or having their private lives blown all out of proportion.

He was the other kid standing by the road as kirk drove past with the beastie boys playing (kickass). There was a deleted scene with him running away from home and telling jim he's an annoying goodie two shoes. It kinda drags though and isn't really neccesary.

 

 

On the other hand, vulcan going bye bye...yeah me no likey that.

 

But I don't mind. It was worth it to see the brilliance of the last flight of the kelvin, karl urban's mccoy and witnessing the kobayashi maru get pwned.

 

Villain's plans are quite often rubbish in the first film of a modern geek franchise. Ya have to spend so long introducing everyone to the new folks that by the time you get to the threat, the baddie will just be blowing the crap out of stuff with no full reasoning. X-Men, batman begins anyone? But don't despair, X-men 2 and the dark knight soon followed... ^_^

Dear god, the last "New" Trek movie was bad, so I am dreading the sequal.

The Aliens sequel is considered a better movie then the original Alien. Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan is considered better then Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I don't feel as if the new Trek film is bad (as I've stated before), but all the same, I'm hoping the sequel is better then the original.

 

Speaking of opinions, I encountered what I considered to be a bad movie after checking it out on cable: District 9.

 

From what I've read in the Wiki article, the film was reviewed favorably and did well at the box office. Several social commentary patterns can be seen throughout the movie as well, which is an interesting premise.

I dont have the super blue ray version, but I have heard that they put the New Enterprise at nearly twice the size of the old in commentary? I guess that would justify the brewery inside the ship. However ship sites are up in arms over what stretched the Enterprise to.

 

As for the movie itself, you cannot argue with it's success. It brought in Trekkers like us, and more importantly...the general movie going audience. Sure we longtime Trekfans are going to disagree..or not like somethings from the movie. But the vast majority of reviewers and viewers overlooked the technical aspects of the film helping the film make over 300 million. Something no other Trek movie came close do doing.

 

My only advice for the next movie is the old KISS philosophy ..Keep it Simple Stupid..and you should get the same audience to return. Just bring in the Klingons for the new Kirk. His first meeting with them would be interesting to see..and no doubt a torn shirt can be added to a scene to appease us oldtimers.
