I don't know about a plastic Enterprise, or a metal case, or insignia. I purchased the two disc non Blu Ray DVD, with a plain movie art/title slip cover and the plastic hard case; the package contains the movie, a digital copy, and all extras.

Bling is all well and good, but sometimes you just want to get at the object in question: a good adventure movie. :-)

DVD? What is this DVD thing? Is that anything like the 8-track recordings I have of the soundtrack from ST I?

The Plastic "enterprise" model set.. You get the movie and a digital copy PLUS a nice snap together model of the new enterprise. The DVD's are "IN" the saucer section. All this and it's only a few bucks more.

I just got the regularly-sized box of Blu-Ray discs (3 in the box), no model of the ship or comm badge collection. I'm just interested in the movie, yanno? Of course it cost me almost $200 dollars, because it was the reason I finally upgraded from a DVD player to a Blu-Ray player. Watched it last night, and it's VIVID!!! Love the movie, love the Blu-Ray resolution! (although it reminded me that there are some scenes where people are out of focus - kinda weird for a major Hollywood release)

Might have an answer for that: on the special features? The director of photography employed a wide screen camera lens, and from what I could gather from the commentary, this is now considered an "old school camera" method to employ, what with everything going digital. As a result, there can be/are imperfections in the shots.

But, the reasoning for the wide screen method was that Abrams and the production guys wanted to have an in character gritty and real look to the film, and the wide screen allows that, and the digital does not.

In the time it took you to discuss this I've bought the regular DVD set and watched it several times.

All Blu-Ray players are backward compatible with DVDs and if you get one with a particularly nice "Up-Convert" option, it not only plays DVDs, but makes them look better than when they were played on your DVD player. I actually got a relatively inexpensive (for Blu-Ray players) model from Samsung on a Black Friday sale for under $150. I looked at some of my DVDs on my new machine and they DO look nicer than before. It also has the ability to get connected to your Internet connection and then stream NetFlix, etc. to your TV directly.

Yummy!!
