To Boldly Go ...

32 posts in this topic

Hi.

I've noticed that there really doesn't seem to be much love for the original Star Trek series here ... at least it doesn't seem that way on the surface. Personally, I'm a sucker for 'Boldly Going Where No One Has Gone Before.' I love the round nacelles and the struts that don't provide near enough structural support and all of that.

Even more, I love the idea of first-encountering things without a wealth of support materials: planets, phenomenon, other races that can be played well since we know enough about them, etc. I also confess that I fell out of love with the Next Generation group of series: TNG, DS9, Voyager, etc. I really don't know enough about their history to fit in.

I'm peeking in on 'Enterprise', and while I haven't seen near enough to judge the series as a whole I do like what I encountered. I admit that I didn't take to the series when it first came out. Hoshi's performance in "Fight of Flight" really turned me off. I also don't like long, drawn out storylines in TV series. Character development is fine, but give me the weekly one-shot or two-part story any day!

( That's TV shows, obviously - RPs take much longer to get anywhere. )

Still: it's not simply the series that I love, but rather the concept of exploration under challenging circumstances. I don't suppose anyone's thinking about setting sail on board a NX-class starship any time soon?

Or, is there an academy at or after 10:00 EST which tends to feature TOS/ENT ships?

I don't know if it qualifies, but the Challenger sim seems to have its fair share of TOS fans. myself among them. Although we're based in the TOS-movie era, we've sailed around in the fragile post-Praxis Klingon detente, had a lengthy Elasian/Troyian storyline over the summer, saw a shift in the Organian Treaty, and even a cameo visit from Scotty (shortly before his disapperance). We've got one of the least developed time periods (from a Trek canon perspective), so it's nice to set up future events for TNG/DS9 future, extrapolate 30 years after TOS events, and make up our own stuff.

But I admit, it's the TOS connections I like the best. (Although the burgundy uniforms are still the coolest.)

Oh yes: definitely points for the burgundy uniforms - arguably the best outfits of all of them.

STSF is an online RP site that offers multiple Trek eras; if the site were to be completely TOS oriented, that would be detrimental in the long run. With a choice of eras and ships, a potential Player can find the right fit for their style or interests.

With that said, of course there are Original Series fans out here! w00t!

I came to know all things Original Series in 1989 after I saw Star Trek 5 The Final Frontier in the theaters. Not the best showing of the Original Crew, but the movie served the purpose and I wanted to find out more about this awesome show that I discovered.

My Trek Eras of interest are TOS, TOS Movie Era, Enterprise and of course Alternate New TOS. I consider Enterprise to be original era, and obviously I can't change my spots and I've always gone for Trek Original. I like that frontier adventuring that seems to epitomize the early era Treks.

Off shoot plot wise, the Mirror Universe time line first introduced in TOS and followed up by Enterprise is more fun to play in as well.

Original velour Blue, Red and Gold are perennial classics. The New TOS movie Blue Red and Gold are slick updates. I like the blue flight suits of Enterprise because ENT dared to be different with the uniform offering and the look was much closer to modern military jump/work/flight/mechanic suits.

But, the Burgundy movie era uniform tunics rock out and trump 'em all: with the belt, the snap closure over the shoulder, rank and service stripes and pips on the one sleeve - very very sci fi Naval.

I'm a Trek reader, and I wing towards anything Original Series/ENT oriented. The multiple Trek omnibus offerings for Mirror/Alternate Universe I will, of course, read.

*We* are around, the fans of the Original Trek(s), have no fear.

Yes....*We* are here. TOS shall live forever. And I agree with you on those burgundy uniforms. They were and still are the very best!

But you can't beat the foam rubber boulders for the best in Special FX!!!

(is a total TOS-head, which is why whenever Manticore gets shot, I like to use "ACTION: CAMERA SHAKES AND WE ALL FALL TO THE LEFT")

I'm trying to remember what movie or show it was: somebody caught a huge stone or piece of debris right in the cassaba, and kept running as if nothing happened. It was on MST one time ...

Anyway: I hope nobody thinks I feel there *shouldn't* be TNG roleplaying. I get lost in it easy because I didn't follow the later shows, but lots of people love it. I just really have a love for round nacelles, big flat discs, and boldly going where no one in his right mind has any business hanging about.

I am a TOS fan. Most all of my TNG characters have had TOS tie ins.

My dream is that there will one day be a TOS starbase sim.

Oh, and TOS also had the best episode titles.

Hi, My name's Will, and I'm a TOS fan. I cut my teeth on TOS at the dinner table in the late 70s when WPIX Channel 11 (NYC) was running it in syndication at dinner time, saw both TMP and Wrath of Kahn first run in the theatre (and cried [and continue to get weepy]) when Spock died at the end of TWOK; saw TUC on IMAX when I was at the USAF SP training center in San Antonio back in 92. Heck, I used to write Movie era fanfiction, with the Constitution-class USS Antietam, NCC-1798, which tie Will and his piratical brother Chris, in with TOS.

And I too think the burgundy TWOK-Generations movie uniform was the best combination uniform that they came up, and had hoped that the AF adopted them as the dress uniform (Someday... maybe)

And I used to run TOS-themed Academies on Friday nights-- USS Exeter Constitution-class Movie era refit.

Especially after one cadet, no longer here, said he hated the burgundy uniforms

-- and will continue to do so on any nights I sub, as long as I have the numbers.

Yeah I work on the CHALLENGER, but I've seriously never seen any Star Trek besides Original Series.

... also a MAJOR "Mirror Universe" fan. I'm getting the Alternate Realities DVD set, mostly so that I can have all the Mirror Universe episodes from all the different series. They should be awesome - especially the "Enterprise" two parter.

Tholians ... Oooh, I love Tholians!

Alternate Realities: the DVD set, particularly the ENT two parter as well as the TOS entry, are excellent Mirror 'Verse reference materials. Good call...you know, in case something should come up... ::little smile::

Long live Original Trek. The only Trek (new TOS or old TOS alike) where the Captain and almost the entire command staff gets to galavant off into a dangerous situation, and I wouldnt have it any other way!

::youngling:: ....and 1989 is na even considered a good entry in the TOS movie franchise, Rekkhai.

From 1979's The Motion Picture on up through 2009's Star Trek, the one film (out of the entire franchise, mind) that I've never cared for is TOS's The Motion Picture.

Yes, yes ::ducks and hides behind something so as to avoid incoming:: I do understand that that TMP was the first film after an almost ten year stretch of no new Trek (not forgetting early 70's Trek Animated) with the reruns delegated to 70's syndicated stations, so at the time it was the Second Coming and such.

Historically, the generally accepted "god awful" films of the franchise have always been: TNG's Insurrection and Nemesis, and TOS's Final Frontier, am I right y'all?

Honestly (Resident Rihan feelings aside on Nemmy, totally understand) I'll take Final Frontier, Nemesis, or Insurrection over TMP anyday.

TMP was made with the concept of the original series in mind, moreso than all the others. That, however, was its biggest problem. I'd put it at about 80 minutes too long for the story that was being told.

Ok ... maybe 40 to 50 minutes too long. Still: all that time wasn't spent on interesting things. I remember when the Enterprise went from encountering the cloud to actually entering the V'ger probe ship. I have the movie on VHS, and I think it took 5 minutes just to fast-scan through the trip. They would've done the audience a huge favor right at that point if they subtitled the whole scene with:

We're going to be doing this for a long while. This doesn't add to the plot or story at all; so take an intermission - go to the bathroom, then refill your soda and popcorn.

If they would've done that as a public service, the movie would've been received much more favorably.

Andorians where first shown in the TOS Episode Journey to Babel; granted the one shown was an Orion assassin altered to appear as an Andorian.

The esteemed Scooter is correct. We first see the Andorians in the TOS Episode Journey to Babel. It helped set the precedence of the Andorian/Tellarite dislike for each other, but the Federation then bringing both of those races together at Babel (after the discovery of the Orion assassin), along with the Humans, Vulcan's and Caitians to become the 5 founding races of the Federation. One of the things that have changed over the years, is that originally, part of what got the Tellarites so ticked off, was that they felt that the Andorians were always being condensending, cocking their heads when speaking to others. Thing is, the reason they did that, was so that they could hear them. Back in TOS days, the Antenna did not move, and were not only hearing, but also part of their vision set. They had to move their heads to hear better. Over the years, they decided to change it to moving antenna, thus that whole premise no longer functions in the back story.

As for that guy looking familiar to you, the Andorian you were thinking of skimure09 is played by Jeffrey Combs. He's one of my favorite Trek actors, as he's been so versatile in his roles. Over the years, he's managed to play seven different characters over 10 seasons in the various Star Trek series, very few have done this. He has had parts in DS9 (6 different versions of the Weyoun clone, Liquidator Brunt and Officer Kevin Mulcahey); in Voyager as Penk, and in the Enterprise series as Commander Shran and Kreen. So keep an eye out, you might see him in other episodes that you don't expect. In fact, one DS9 episode, due to the story line, he ended up having to play both Burnt and Weyoun....must have just moved into the makeup trailer that week.

Enjoy!

Hi, I'm Atragon and I remember TOS when it originally aired, too.

{Small crowd of old people, leaning close to listen} Hi, Atragon.

I remember watching the first episode aired because it scared the bejeepers out of me (and I'f been missing my bejeepers ever since). My brothers and I were psyched to watch this new Sci Fi TV show and there was Nancy Crater turning into the salt monster with the creepy face and suction cup finger tips!

I remember watching it in syndication, then making tricorders and phasers out of random bits of wood to then imagine I was McCoy during play time at preschool. That's right, you young whippersnappers, we used to use our "imagination".

We *still* use our imaginations here at STSF. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a Starfleet officer, but we all know that can't really happen. Yet, as an adult, STSF enables me to RP as a Starfleet officer. Fair trade, I'd say. :D

LOL, you must have been one of all those old folks that were sitting behind me at the theatre when Star Trek 11 came out.
