In a timeline shift, the USS Algonquin (Akira Class) has encountered the Federation science ship USS Discovery just as it came through a subspace distortion not far from Starbase 375.

In the present timeline, the Federation is at war with the Romulan Star Empire.

The crew of the USS Discovery wear pre-war Starfleet uniforms and know nothing of the war. In fact, they had just come from a joint Romulan-Federation science conference.

Just before they met the Algonquin, the Discovery experienced an explosion that badly damaged the ship.

The USS Algonquin is alongside the USS Discovery, helping with repairs.
