Help!

Hey all,

I'm new to this site, and simming in general, and i have some questions i would like to ask:

I tried to enter the Starfleet Academy session this Friday, but each time i try to log in into the chat client, i get an invalid user/password error. What's going on and how do i get in?

Hey, Markus, and welcome to STSF!

Your message board username and password are your login credentials for the chat room, so since you registered and posted this message, you should be able to use that name and PW to log into the rooms. :P You can also get into the chat room directly from the message boards if you are logged in here -- go to the top right corner of the screen and click "Live Chat."

Hope this helps, and I look forward to seeing you in the academies! Feel free to ask around if you have any more questions -- we're a friendly bunch. :P

::clears throat::

Welcome!

Two things to remember: 1) Any Academy hosted by STSF N'Dak is a guaranteed suicide mission [And that's a direct quote from his signature]. 2) Never compare the GMs to Captains Bligh or Queeg if you want to get graduate sometime before the turn of the century.

That being said, I'd recommend reading: How to sim, as well as: Tips from the Moose

For all your technobabble needs, visit Memory Alpha or Ex Astris Scientia.

Academy times are listed ET, so adjust as appropriate for your timezone. Academies are mandatory, and everyone is human. Save your character development for your Advanced Ship. Minimum graduation time is 3 Academies, but don't expect to graduate that quickly; the host teams prefer to see how are over a longer span of time. And once you are posted to your first Advanced Sim, it's strongly recommended that any ideas that go outside Trek canon be approved by your host team.

And, as Miss Kent pointed out, your chat room login/pw are your board login & password. Just click the Live Chat link at the top of the forums and you're in

@Kent

Thank you very much for the info, it's working.

@Will Marx

Thanks, those tips by Moose were very helpful. Btw, is daylight savings time calculated into the sim schedule?

@T'Kar

Thanks for the advice. Now where did I put my towel?... :P

Yes. If you're local area doesn't follow DST, either add or subtract an hour for summer/winter schedules. I know the Philippines are 12 hours ahead of the sim schedule during DST and 13 during Standard time.

Having a clock on your computer set for Eastern Daylight/Standard time can be helpful

Got it. I'll try to make the 3PM Academy today.

Also, is the chat server offline? I get an error connecting to the server message.

EDIT: I've re-read Moose's tips and came across this:

The Starfleet Academy simulations are held in the holodeck chat room at www.startrek.com. You will have to register a startrek.com screen name, even if you already made one at www.stsf.net. They are two different websites. The holodeck can be found on startrek.com by clicking the "Community" tab on the left of the screen, then selecting chat. Scroll to the bottom of that page and you'll find links to all the simming rooms.

I don't have a startrek.com account. Is this the cause of my problem?

Ignore the entry on the startrek.com chat room. Moose never updated it when we got our own chat rooms here. All you need to do is click on the live chat link here in the forums to be taken to our chat rooms.

Thanks for the fast reply and the info, but I really would like to know the status of the chat server.

I get a connection error each time I try, and I've tried changing browsers too (I'm using a mac). This hasn't been happening since yesterday, and I'm really keen on attending my first academy sim.

Much thanks in advance :P

I just went into the chat room, and it seems to be working. It works on Macs, as long as a Java runtime is installed.

Try going to the boards (you're already here) and logging in with your username and password, then pressing the "Live Chat" button on the top of the page. If you get an error, copy the error in full and put the text of the error in this thread.

Nope, it still doesn't work. The java applet works, but i get an error like this:

Error connecting to the server. Please try again in a few minutes.

I guess its something to do with my side of the connection; I'll try using a proxy.

Thanks for helping me check.

Yup. This looks like it might be a firewall blocking your connections.

After some trial and error, I realized that the problem was not with my connection, but was with my Mac. Apparently I get that error message each time I try to sim on my mac. Has anyone encountered such a problem?

I have always simmed on a MacBook and have never had that issue.

::cocks head::

Are you using a wireless network? I don't know if you're on a desktop or a laptop but I've occasionally had issues depending on which of my school's networks I was using.

I am using a Macbook

To be honest, I think it has nothing to do with the browser nor the wireless.

I've tried using camino and safari, connected to the school network, home network, even a relative's network. I've even tried connecting with an ethernet wire, but to no avail.
