Preparation ...

Medical Log - Lt. T'Aral, CMO

Our current journey has given myself and my staff a particular opportunity. While it is true that ideally I should be conducting initial medical reviews of the crew, I have chosen to put that off for the senior officers for two reasons. First: due to the hastiness of the launch I have not had an opportunity to discuss the matter with the Captain. Second: given a two week voyage in fairly secure space with a fresh crew, I have had the opportunity to run a number of prepratory drills with both the direct medical staff and the First Responder teams throughout the ship. The results of these drills have been positive ...

---------------------------------------------

"Medical Units to Battlestations. Repeat - Medical Units to Battlestations."

The fact that there was no alert and that only medical units were being directed was a fair give-away that it was a drill. This was good, as T'Aral did not wish to disturb the crew in general. Several drills had been performed, with the senior medical staff acting as inspectors after the second call - once T'Aral was satisfied with their preparedness. What T'Aral was most interested in was the readiness of the ship's First Responders.

Like many vessels, the crew of the Comanche Creek was established for a certain level of efficiency. There were not enough medical officers throughout the vessel to cover every conceivable crisis, since that would mean a host of idle hands 99% of the time. To adjust for this, the ship had a roster of First Responders: crew with other duties who were trained in initial contact to provide needed care, allowing the medical staff to remain in readiness within the Sick Bay to answer calls elsewhere. These crewmembers were expected to participate in the medical drills, so that should crisis call they too would be ready.

One particular inspection was noted within T'Aral's log. In the first drill, responders were directed to break the seals of their medical kits and inventory the contents. Most were in order, but one kit already had its seal broken, and there was no signed replacement. Checking the contents, a protoplaser was missing. The crewman was quite worried, as he was the one who had originally stored it on board.

"I don't understand, Leutenant - the case was sealed when I brought it."

T'Aral raised a hand to cease his protests. "Events occur, crewman. Most likely someone had a minor injury which they did not wish to report to Medical for whatever reason. They took the protoplaser, but did not log it. A replacement will be issued immediately."

With that case noted, T'Aral established a rule that all F.R. kits be inventoried weekly, logged, and re-sealed. In this way she would keep medical battle-ready at all times. As the journey progressed T'Aral became confident that the vessel's staff was ready, and the frequency of drills decreased to more normal levels.

Now there was just a matter of the physicals. She would discuss it with the captain, along with some precautionary measures she wished to take before anyone beamed down to New Vulcan.
