GSgt Mike Hefner

Marine and Security Equipment

Agincourt Marine Equipment

The 139th Marine Battalion currently assigned to USS Agincourt, NCC 81762, uses certain reconnaissance and combat gear brought aboard by a Marine recon specialist who was hitching a ride back to base. GSgt Mike Hefner of Force Recon SpecOp Omega boarded just before Agincourt came under fire at Melkas III and was subsequently stranded in the Perseus arm. Since recon specialists have little use aboard ship, Hefner was first assigned to Agincourt's Combat Service Support Group but soon transferred to the 139th Marine Battalion.

Created in 2383 to monitor the situation on Romulus after the assassination of Praetor tr'Yyhei, Force Recon SpecOp Omega, codename Retro, is a small intelligence-gathering unit that spends weeks, and sometimes months, planet-side – alone or in small teams – gathering information using their biological senses. What technology they use is VLF - primitive, but effective in eluding modern detection methods. The force is pan-military and inter-species, composed of a select few chosen from throughout the Federation.

The technology that Hefner brought aboard is used sparingly and given only to specially trained Agincourt personnel for the following reasons.

  • The technology is pricey, so it is not easily obtainable.
  • Some of the equipment was specially manufactured for and restricted to use by Force Recon Omega. With the Soltan threat, however, the tactical objectives of the Federation have shifted and oversight of the special operations teams have been delegated to their immediate commanding officers.
  • Some of the technology, specifically the Combat Skin and Stealth Recon Skin, is not easily used by every species.

Item: Proximity Sensor Dermal Unit (PSDU)

Generic Term: Combat Skin

Use: Combat and Close Proximity Rescue

Detection Level: low

Coverage: Neckline to wrists and ankles, open for necessary body functions.

The PSDU is a light-weight, thin, microsensor loaded leotard that senses objects in close proximity and transmits the information to the wearer's natural epidermal neural receptors in the form of a sensory impulse that mimics touch. To wear and use this skin effectively the operative must completely depilitate (remove all hair). The sensors are then on the completely bare skin, enabling the wearer to instantly sense, and therefore to react more quickly to threats, especially in hand to hand combat. It is not body armor nor does it increase physical prowess. It can, however, be used in conjunction with body armor, though the body armor may interfere with sensor function. The PSDU can also be worn during close proximity rescue when reaction to moving objects (such as falling beams or rocks) is essential to survival.

Item: Proximity Sensor Body Armor (PSBA)

Generic Term: Overkill

Use: Extreme Combat Situations

Detection Level: low

Coverage: Neckline to wrists and ankles, open for necessary body functions.

The PSBA is a heavy-weight microsensor loaded skin-hugging body armor that can be worn beneath ordinary combat fatigues. Its function is the same as the Combat Skin with the addition of body armor. Recon and Assault Marines call it Overkill because, though it does breathe with the skin it is uncomfortable to wear for extended periods of time.

Item: Stealth Diversion Reconnaissance Skin, Model 1 (SDRS-1)

Generic Term: Recon Skin

Use: Stealth Recon, Rescue

Detection Level: stealth

Coverage: total body (think Spider Man)

The SDRS-1 is a non-reflective leotard that enables the wearer to blend with the terrain much as a chameleon blends with its environment. The material confuses all information that would ordinarily be picked up by high-tech detection devices/sensors. It is fitted with a re-breather and a body waste recycle unit, both of which enable him to spend extended periods of time in close proximity with his target without being detected.

Item: Biosign Detector (BD)

Generic Term: BS (Marine humor, mosdef)

Detection Level: low

Use: Detect life forms within a radius of 1 km

The Biosign Detector is a thin, light touch-screen activated monitor embedded in a high-impact polystyrene sheet that can be worn on the wrist or attached to a combat uniform. It provides species and proximity data within a 1 km radius and can be programmed to detect weapons.

Item: EVA Flight Suit

Generic Term: Skywalker

Use: Fighter Pilot EVA

Detection Level: high

Coverage: full body

The EVA Flight Suit is a lightweight full-body jumpsuit that is fully functional for Extra Vehicular Activity with one special adaptation. A thin integrated electronic ring encompasses the inside of the helmet-suit connect. This enables the wearer to use either a regulation combat fighter helmet or a special EVA helmet. Slightly smaller and of totally different design from the fighter helmet. the EVA helmet has a non-metallic single-mold exterior that easily disburses light and protects the wearer from broad spectrum harmful solar radiation without impairing vision. In essence, the composition of the helmet itself shields its occupant from external threats and provides 360 degree vision. An LCARS is embedded in the suit's left arm. When activated, it projects a clear interactive display within the wearer's field of vision but appears to be outside the helmet and within easy reach of either hand. This is a holographically projected computer display that can be manipulated by voice command or touch. All information on the flight computer or loaded into its memory is available to the wearer. Interface to and from the ship and flight suit can be enabled or disabled.

Warning: Possibility of enemy detection is high.
