A letter home

Oh! The Most Reverent Alstar Lexi, Count and Prefect of Flyria, Honored One Star of the Sovereign Marines!

Correspondence is hereby requested by:

Jyrd Lexi, Count and Second Heir to the Chair of Flyria, Distinguished Lieutenant Junior Grade of the Starfleet of the Federation.

My dearest father,

I hope this letter finds you and our family well. I understand you have placed yourself in the Sortition process for the House of Plyla, vacated by the late Duke Frarya. I wish you the best of luck in bringing such an honor to our humble family. The Plylan Province would be lucky to have a governor a great as you. I will watch the Brythton news wire with the greatest of interest for the final result!

I apologize for the length in between my last correspondence, but as man of the military yourself, I can rest assured that you understand the demands which befall an officer. But this letter comes to you with outstanding news! Starfleet has saw fit to bestow upon me the honor of the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade! I have taken the opportunity to inform our honored Ambassador to the Federation of this joyous news, and he has passed on his most heartfelt congratulations and his deepest gratitude for my continued service as an ambassador, example, and steward of the Sovereignty. I only wish for my actions to continue to earn the respect and admiration of the Sovereignty and, most importantly, that of you and our family.

As per the request of our honored ambassador, I have begun a regimen of reading human literature and philosophy. My first piece is called The Brothers Karamazov, written by human author Fyodor Dostoevsky, of a place on Earth called Russia . Russia , you may or may not know, is home to one of Earth’s view paradises, Siberia. I had the pleasure of visiting their during my stay at the academy, in particular, the Taymyr Peninsula. It was beautiful indeed.

One thing I have noticed on my reading however, is that there is one universal truth in the practice of philosophy across all races. And that, my dearest father, is existentialism. All races, not just Brythton, long to know what it means to be who they are, whether they be Hman, or Klingon, or Brythton. Although I’ve only read the first book of this acclaimed literary work, I can already tell that it is going to be a recurring theme throughout the book. Even though what I’ve read is, in effect an introduction of the main characters. You can tell that the means in which they think and in which they have been raised will lead to a clash of personalities and personal philosophies.

What I hope to gain from this exercise is the ability to better function outside the Song. As Brythtons, we spend our time focusing and the society and the group dynamic, and what it means to be a whole. Humans, however, focus on what it means to be an individual. On this assignment, if I am to make it through, I need to learn how to function as an individual. I need to focus on what it means to be Jyrd Lexi, not a just Brythton, because, in all honesty, I do not have the Brythton society to fall back on. As a deharmonized Brythton, I lack the ability to truly be a Brythton. Yet, I still need an identity, and that is as Jyrd the “person”, not Jyrd the Brythton.

I hope this makes sense to you, my dearest father. Just know that I continue to serve in the continued hope of making you and our people proud as a society, but I am also learning to serve for myself, to make -me- proud as Jyrd the individual, for out here, that is all I have.

Thus, the correspondence between:

The Most Reverent Alstar Lexi, Count and Prefect of Flyria, Honored One Star of the Sovereign Marines

And:

Jyrd Lexi, Count and Second Heir to the Chair of Flyria, Distinguished Lieutenant Junior Grade of the Starfleet of the Federation.

Has ended. May the Song guide us all!
