COMPLAINT!

STSF Message Boards Are Too COMPLEX for Stupid People!

I want to complain about these boards. I am stupid, and on behalf of all stupid people, these boards are too complicated for me. There are multiple pages for some topics and I get confused. They should all be on one page. And sometimes they don't show all the pages so I think there are 5 pages when there are really 6.

Thank you in advance for correcting this problem and finally making the boards stupid-person-accessible.

If we displayed all topics on the same page...  it would make the page load VERY VERY slow.  On a dialup, it could take upto a minute for all of the topics to show up.

I run another board that has over 5000 replies to one topic.  It has over 400 pages for the topic.  Could you imagine trying to display that all in one window?  It would crash some folks browser for having too much info on it.

Thats why I will be leaving it like it is for now.

Hey there,

Well, dealing with two topics, my responses to them. :)

Chat Room Links: As others have pointed out, linking from the STSF website directly wouldn't work properly. Outside of the simple issues with HTML, Paramount wouldn't be getting an accurate count of how much room traffic there is. What I have done personally is placed a bookmark to the Community Chat Login page (located here). This way, when I want to do a sim, I click the bookmark...put in my login information...and choose the room. Takes a grand total of what, 10 seconds?

The Message Boards: While our boards at startrek.com don't have as much traffic as these, I'd agree sometimes they can get confusing. However, the simple volumne of posts on these boards would prevent there from being just one long "list" of topics. In addition, it would get very confusing. Overall, I'd rate the current setup at 90%. There's always room for improvement, but I think they're headed/are in the right direction.

You go fight for the right of stupid people! without those brave souls, McDonalds would never have been sued for the coffee incident, Bush would not have been elected and survivor would never be taken off the air. Let us hail these ignoramuses for what they have done for us! and once you've done that, proclaim me KING of the morons!

OK...  ok.  LOL.  This is getting a little too far off topic.

Let's keep this thread clean if possible.  I try to follow it as much as I can, but if it starts turning into general chit chat, it takes away from it's purpose.

If you have any ideas or suggestions, I'd love to hear from you.  I most certainly can't promise I can/will do anything, but I will at least listen.  :)

Thanks.

All I did was click on the link to the room I wanted. So it took me to the login screen. I saved that URL as a bookmark. Which is the same link in my signature. Though I don't have it set to "always remember". Which is probably why it works for me. But it's not bad for an alternative to directly linking.

If you do that for both the holodeck and the ready room, it's almost just the same. So does this mean that we've taken 10 seconds down to 5? :o

Actually that McDonalds coffee lawsuit was legitimate.  McDonalds had been serving their coffee at 20 degrees above what the FDA had considered "safe" - and it wasn't just that McDonalds but all of them.

Sure that woman should have known better than to put hot coffee between her legs, but the problem would have just manifested itself some other way.

::notices Travis didn't even attempt to defend the FOOD at McDonalds, just the coffee::

This happened in 1996.  I think you would have been about 8 at the time.

Hey Webbie...a couple of things I noticed.

Seeing how I'm one of them, where's the angel emoticon?   :)

Also, the schedule page seems to never reflect the actual users online.  From the schedule it appears that Eerin Vortic and FredM are on the STSF page 24 hours a day! This may be true...and may likely be true, but...probably not. :)

I think the schedule page is caught in some sort of temporal rift. :o

The page was last updated on March 31.., possibly it's stuck at that time when those two were online.

Lastly, this is just a question. There is the quick reply, (Which I don't use... I like the normal reply.) and reply at the top of the page. Just wondering if a small reply button could be added next to the "quote" button. If it's not needed then whatever. ::shrug:: Just thinking about when I read a post and want to reply without quoting... if it's in the middle of the page it'd just be easier. Eh, no big deal. innocent.gif

I've noticed something.

When we change our avatars and signatures, often we all want to see how they look. Usually this means we go in, and edit it when it doesn't look right. Sometimes people tack in a note about a change in their Avatar or signature in a post, saying they wanted to see how it looked. Not limited to Avatar previews and signatures, but possibly also those who have a certain posting font style, or want to try out a different color. I've seen a few of these, here and there.

Which brings me to the point. Could or would, a "test posts" or a form/something to that effect somewhere on the boards, be helpful? Don't want to suggest to add more forums that aren't or wouldn't be needed, so I figured, TPTB would be the people to ask, and everyone for thoughts and opinions on something like that.

Just curious. ;)

If it's something ya'll seriously want, I'll put it up.  It's not that hard to do.  Smack it at the bottom of the boards.  ;)

But I'd like to make sure it gets at least a couple posts a month.  If not, then I have no problem with people posting "test" messages.  I'll just move them to the Trash Can forum (basically hiding them).

Hey, is it just me, or when you open some message posts you get some "Operation Aborted" Error? Then, the page redirects to a "Cannot find server" page?  I then have to refresh my screen to get the message.. It doesn't happen all the time, though. Last time it happend was yesterday.  Thanks.

There was a slight problem with the mySQL database earlier that I fixed yesterday, so I don't know if that's related to the problem or not that you're having.

I can try to look into it further for you if you want.  I would need to know what Operating System you're using, your browser type (MISE, Netscape, Opera, Mozilla, Konquodor, etc), and if possible your browser version.

Also...   just in case...  make sure you have all of your Windows Updates and such done.  Goto http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and make sure you have all of the security/bug fixes applied and try again.  Many times it's just a problem with the browser itself.

But I'd be happy to try to look into it further.

And in case you've done the latest Windows Update, and just updated the newest Service pack for XP, dont' rush, Microsoft just recalled it, after my dialup took 10 hours last weekend to download and install it.

Seems there is a problem with the XP update, that it will occassionally shut down your computer or lock up when it hits certain firewall and virus programs. So, even if you're updated, you might want to check what they say to do in the meanwhile.  (hits the restore point!)

I've never had a problem with any of the updates myself....  lol.  =)

Maybe I'm just lucky.  (Or too much of a nerd that fixes his own problems without Microsoft, lol)

Can't say that I've had any problem with the most recent patches either. :\

10 hours for a DL is psychotic. SP1 didn't even take that long. It only took about two or three hours on dial up. You should really look into getting cable or DSL.

I've had or had control over (i.e. used for work) computers that ran ME, NT, 2000, and XP.  So far, 2000 is the best.  XP is too new and doesn't have a lot of the bugs worked out yet.

(They say 2000 is NT on steroids.  If so, ME is 98 on laxitives.)

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but the confused smile is hard to distinguish from the sad smilie.  Maybe the ???  above his head could be white or something.  (highlight the smile and then you'll see the question marks better)

Also, I was curious.  What is the difference between an envelope andan envelope with a star on it?
