Variations of Roleplay

Hi, I'm new to this site, obviously, and one thing in particular is confusing me right now; Everyone seems to be using original characters and/or their Trek alter egos on this site, which I understand. I am just wondering; does anyone do standard Trek role plays where they use actual established characters from the series for short or long term roleplays? I have been dying to roleplay as Captain Kirk for a while, but apparently this isn't the right place to do it. Could someone please direct me to a place on this site where I could do that, or, if that is not possible, a site where I could do that? Thanks.

Teagan out.

Teagan:

Welcome to STSF - this is a wicked cool site to Trek RPG on, if you're willing to take on an original character of your own.

As for RPing as the established Trek canon characters? STSF is your own original character oriented, overall. Actually ... it's more fun that way.

Occasionally, you will have a Player or Host who uses a canon character to "guest star" (short term) for one of the chats or in a written story. In recent memory, I believe Challenger had Mister Scott guest appear in a log for the re-launch?

As for Trek sites who have Players regularly use the Trek characters? I'm not aware of any, and most that I've come across are all original characters.

And, you might have trouble playing as Kirk anyway - I'd imagine he's pretty popular for those RPG sites that do use canon characters, and he might already be taken across several.

DEAR T-i was like you not sure of role playing due to not doing it for awhile<AOL Did it when it as 3.0>IT is easier to role play your own character rather then kirk or spock<Think of playing kirk with a change like younger, just starting starfleet or a character cross between mccoy type /spock/or scotty...just use your imagination or join a sim -academy <just watch it a couple time it might help -just enjoy go with the flow --happy simming

Thanks, guys. :P Hm, I just might whip up an OC because this site looks so fun. The reason I was asking is because I am planning to do a Kirk cosplay soon, and wanted some fun "Practice". To properly join up to this rp, though, I think I'll wait till I become more oriented with the Trek universe. I'll probably be lurking quite a bit, however.

::clears throat::

Welcome!

Two things to remember: 1) Any Academy hosted by STSF N'Dak is a guaranteed suicide mission [And that's a direct quote from his signature]. 2) Never compare the GMs to Captains Bligh or Queeg if you want to get graduate sometime before the turn of the century.

That being said, I'd recommend reading: How to sim, as well as: Tips from the Moose

For all your technobabble needs, visit Memory Alpha or Ex Astris Scientia.

Academy times are listed Eastern Time, so adjust as appropriate for your timezone. Academies are mandatory, and everyone is human. Save your character development for your Advanced Ship. Minimum graduation time is 3 Academies, but don't expect to graduate that quickly; the host teams prefer to see how are over a longer span of time. And once you are posted to your first Advanced Sim, it's strongly recommended that any ideas that go outside Trek canon be approved by your host team. Feel free to sit in on the Academies for awhile and a few Advanced sims, until you decide to jump in with both feet

As for trying to cosplay Kirk and try to get his mannerisms correct, take a week or two off, and just sit in front of the tv (or computer) and watch TOS and the first 6 movies, over and over again. Brother of a friend of mine needed to play the disembodied voice at the other end of an elevator call button, so he watched 2001 A Space Odyssey over and over and over until he got the voice and mannerisms of HAL down pat. Creepy.

"Look Dave, I can see you're really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over."

Yup. That's right, we had a plot recently where we used Mister Scott as a special guest character. He appeared in the live game for a couple of sims prior to his boarding the Jenolan. He basically toured the ship and had dinner with us before catching his flight on the Jenolan. We also worked in the impact of his "loss" into the sim and how it impacted some of our players. But, generally we tend to use canon characters sparingly and only when necessary (or to boost morale and stuff). I did hear about another sim where you could play as canon characters on the Enterprise-D, but it looked terrible and not somewhere I'd want to play in. I think it's much more fun to play as your own original characters and not have to be limited to the particular traits of that character ::shrugs:: but that's just me. :P Goodluck and welcome to the boards though.

Challenger did Scott? Who did him? NDak?

BTW, nice to have you join, Teagan. Hope you last longer than some cadets did. :P

Teagan - What you might want to ask yourself is "How would I have reacted in Captain Kirk's place, especially when he was a junior officer?" I think making up a character to fulfill this imaginative bend we all have makes it more interesting than trying to fulfill a role already established, documented, cannonized, rationalized, analyzed,.... you get my picture.

I loved having Scotty visit us. Just wish he liked my root beer better.....didn't mix well with Scotch.

Who did him? I think A9 did. Only because I think A9 has probably done everything imaginable within allowable limits here. That, and NDak would have found a way to have us all killed.

Bottom line: Have some fun! Be creative! I remember my cadet days, and bringing a fennel cake used for phaser practice because of the way the powdered sugar caused a significant reaction.....

Thanks for the compliment (it was a compliment, right?), but I didn't do a plot with Scotty. I did one with a Dyson's Sphere, which is the last place we all saw Scotty, but I didn't have him stuck in the door there. Teagan, have fun being... Teagan!
