Stargate Universe

61 posts in this topic

A few advertisements were flashed a couple months back; there's also an article at Wikipedia.

So, Stargate Universe will follow the adventures of a crew working from an Ancient ship. The article maintains that it will be "dark and edgy", and will supposedly appeal to both veteran fans and allow new fans to watch without being overloaded with all the canon backstory. I've never gotten interested in Stargate, so I'm assuming if I wanted to dive in, I'd do so with this series.

Lou Diamond Phillips will be taking on the role of a Colonel Telford, but it's not known if he is a permanent series regular after the pilot.

That whole "ship based crew" and "dark and edgy" thing makes it sound as if Stargate gets together with Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica Re-Imagined. Not saying that this formula is a bad thing, but definitely a blending of sci fi show formula.

SG-1 lasted for what, 10 seasons? Atlantis was on for five seasons, and that's pretty good for a spin off. Universe will either last for one season, two at the most, or crash and burn within 12 episodes. No middle ground with this series, my opinion.

Pretty easy to go 10 seasons when every gate looks basically the same, regardless of the planet. Hey look...another planet with North American looking woods!

Nope, not cynical.

And, yet another native population is under siege by the bad guys? The Stargate team must save them, woo! :-)

And, we've all heard the "Star Trek is done" argument, how it's best to leave it alone after all the films and TV shows, or how the franchise and orginal concept is all supposedly irrevocably damaged from the new film TOS alternate time line and all that hackneyed crud.

But, could the same argument be said of the Stargate franchise?

Is it time to let Gate go off into the sunset?

Or is it still a viable weekly entertainment concept that allows for the average sci fi fan to enjoy or families to enjoy watching it together?

I've seen a little preview of it in the DVD box set for SG:A season 5 it looks different than SG:1 and SG:A since they are suppose to be lost in space on a ship with very little contact with SGC . WE'll see if it's more of the same or actually worth watching .

They seemed to be trying to get away from the "every planet looks the same" thing by introducing the big mega-enemy arcs which involve a lot of space battles and so forth. Atlantis even more so than the later seasons of SG-1. But for me, I think the series lost a lot of its charm and interest when it shifted from exploration to explosions. A "dark and edgy" new spinoff sounds likely to follow the same pattern of blowing things up, which disappoints me.

Honestly, I think the same problem has plagued Trek. It's as though no one understands, or wants to write (dares to write?), a show that doesn't have to be about Beating Up the Big Bad. And part of the problem with this is that every time you beat one Big Bad, the next Big Bad has to be a Bigger Badder Bad. Which of course you then have to beat.... The end result of this spiral is ludicrous, and results in things like Voyager kicking the butts of an entire Borg city ten years after a single cube devastated the best defense Starfleet could muster.

LOL, yes every planet in SG1 looked the same.... but they had an amusing meta-awareness of it sometimes. That's what made the show so great, is that it didn't take itself too seriously. I mean, in later seasons the good guys were pretty much nonchallant about being captured by baddies, and joked about it in a "here we go again" kind of way.

But if you're not judging things on sets alone, they still managed to make each episode have something unique going on AND have a good overarching plot.

Nope, not cynical (really)

Anyway, I'm curious to see how this new show goes... although it probably depends on who is involved with making it. Personally, I think that Trek is done, and it's because it has gotten so far from the roots of who was working on it before. I mean look.. Jonathan Frakes directed First Contact, and it was awesome. But then the Next Gen crew (who worked with Roddenberry) were only barely involved in Enterprise. And then the last two movies were directed by people who never watched and didn't give a hoot about Star Trek.

So point being... I think that if the people that made SG1 great are involved with this new series, I think it'll be great, too. But if it's just some other folks trying to cash in on the name, then I doubt it'll get off the ground.

Yes, it turned into kicking the same butts they kicked before over and over. I say the entire Stargate franchise died at about the end of SG1 season five, where they stopped exploring.

The question comes down to ... can they come up with an original idea?

One of the best SG1 episodes ( in my opinion ) starts with Daniel and the delightful words "... that's just how I feel. What do you think, Jack?"

I wouldn't say that there were no good episodes in the later seasons: only that the good episodes were the ones that they stepped away from the Mega-Enemy Arcs and went into situations where we got to see the characters be whomever they were.

Those are the fun ones.

Based on the Wiki article (if I understood correctly) this new crew can't even "drive" the Ancient ship they are on, and the ship is automated to follow a pre-programmed course of planets that were explored/seeded by a first Ancient ship?

So, they plan to have this SG team tool about the galaxies, and only explore when this ship stops at planets. It's like being on an automated monorail at an amusement park

A little assinine if you ask me, very, very thin premise.

Never even realized there had been a short lived animated Stargate. Had to look it up.

Some people don't realize there was a short lived animated Star Trek either. Hmmmm, reasons.....

So... to come back some time later and jump into a random conversation...

The advertisements for this have me skeptical. I've seen (nearly?) every episode of SG1, and not very many of Atlantis (and most of the ones I have seen were in German about a month ago, where two episodes are usually on right after I get home from work, but the language skills are still a bit weak in some areas).

Anyway, I saw the advertisements, and I felt like they were trying to make Stargate look too much like Enterprise (and that sure turned out well). From what I could tell, they added the sex appeal (and not that strange Dr. Carter sex appeal, but girls in far more revealing/less military clothing). For me (and probably most early SG1 fans), the original series focused quite a bit on connecting history to the future, and doing so with technology that is thought to be "hypothetically" correct. I'm afraid that aspect will be critically lost with this new series, much like how it was only used sparingly in later seasons of Atlantis.

That being said, I think there are still quite a bit of avenues for the Stargate universe to explore, and I am excited about the new series. Basically, I just hope it doesn't suck. I'm never home on Friday nights, so as long as I can watch it online somewhere, I'll be fine. (At some point, I'm going to invest in a TiVo or something.) I really hope they don't "battlestar" it too much, meaning I hope they don't ruin a potentially good storyline with a bad script.

Stargate Atlantis and Later SG-1 epis used quite a bit of stock footage over..and over again. This cannot be for a ship in the aformentioned plot description. This ship should look derelict, old...yet able to absorb some punishment for the inevitable spacebattles it will face. And it certainly should not follow Star Trek Voyager as role model when it comes to stock footage usage and an endless supply of support craft. The ship itself will be a character of the show given the premise. If it takes a beating in an episode, leave scars.

Oh and the characters...well...err.. I'll leave that up to you.

Sci Fi Channel is pushing a new summer replacement science fiction/fantasy show called Warehouse 13.

For TV trivia buffs that recall the shows, Warehouse might be described as Friday the 13th The Series (late 80's, few seasons, modern horror) meets Special Unit 2 (early 2000's, short lived, quirky modern sci fi).

While veteran actors Saul Rubinek (Lead Warehouse Agent) and C.C.H Pounder (Mysterious Liason) are always fun to watch, and the lighthearted adventures of the show are doable ... I don't think the show'll last very long.

Yeah, it tries to be "X Files" Lite. I am watching it on Hulu (the poor man's TiVo) and it's fun, but I agree that it probably won't last.
