J. Shamor

Leaving the past behind

A Joint Log by Jon Shamor and Debbie Matthews

Jon spent most of his time in the armory, updating the inventory while making a few notes. Aside from the repairs, the Starbase crew also supplied the armory with new power packs for the rifles as well as a few crates of new weapons. That is always a blessing but the hope that they will never be used remains as it is, a hope. Upon finishing his duties, he receives a message from Dr. Matthews letting him know that it is time for him to come to sickbay. Normally he avoids sickbay like a ninja avoids getting caught during a stealth mission, but the circumstances were different. He chose to go to sickbay to ask Deb not only to make a change cosmetically but to acquire a heart monitor as well.

The change to his left eye was a request that appeared to be out of left field to the doctor. Not that many people knew the real story about his eyes because of how personal of an injury it was. To Shamor it was like losing a part of you and given a consolation that reminded him of what happened and never being able to live it down. This was a chance for Jon to move on, finally ending a chapter of his life that plagued him for nearly two thousand years.

As for the heart monitor it was more of a serious issue. A heart attack that nearly claimed his life and made him second-guess in every aspect of his life. The stress from the last mission didn't seem to help either. Even if one heart failed not even Deb could guess on how long the other could last by itself.

Deb had to admit she was a bit surprised by Jon Shamor's request. She'd known him for years and the fact his eyes were different colors never seemed to bother him before. She couldn't help wondering why he suddenly decided he needed a matching pair. After he explained how he came about his "real" eye, she understood his request a little better. But altering the color would never change where the eye came from. Deb was convinced there was another reason and this might be the perfect time to ask a few discreet questions.

Jon's second request was a bit more troubling. Zemuns were among a handful of species with two hearts. Shamor had suffered a heart attack several years earlier. It affected only one of his hearts and the damage was mostly repaired. She knew Jon had resolved to take better care of himself after that particular scare. She assumed his request for a monitor was another way for him to insure there were no further problems.

By the time he entered Sickbay, Deb had everything set up. They would do the physical first and then permanently dye the one eye. She waved Jon over to the biobed as soon as he came through the door. She greeted him with a smile. "Have a seat Jon," she said pleasantly. "This won't take too long."
