Spam PMs

I've received two spam PMs in the last month and was wondering what I can do about that. I know I can block each user who is sending them but is there another way? Anyone else having this problem?

Thanks.

I've received about 3-4. I turned off email notifications in the STSF user prefs so I won't get notified of them anymore as I really don't receive anything from here otherwise.

I've gotten 2 on each account I have (Aliana Lucindak and this one), from two different people. I've blocked them, but you can also talk to A9 about doing something.

Well, anyone on the Boards can send a PM to anyone else on the Boards, so there is no way to block ones that are SPAM (since the system cannot tell if you really *DO* want to buy inexpensive drugs or not). However, you can drop me a PM to let me know who they are from and we might suspend the user if they are someone who just joined to SPAM the site.

Just sent you two PMs Atragon with the names of the offenders (one is online right now). I refrained from sending them a nasty PM in return.... :P

The links in the PMs are all to the same website. Perhaps you can backtrack from the website and block the offenders? ::shrugs::

Anywho, I leave it in your capable hands.

Thanks.

EDIT: I also refrained from posting the offenders names..... (::smacks hand as it tries to type out the offenders names::)

Oh yay. The pms are basically just annoying, and I like STSF to much to leave because of them, so it's nice knowing I won't have to deal with it for at least a week or two.

Thanks so much guys.

FYI - I did a google search on some of the names and the website they reference. Apparently they do this in other forums using the same names.

Go figure....

"They" are probably computer programs that troll the web for forums, sign up for throwaway accounts and randomly post or PM. It doesn't surprise me that the same sets of spam names keep coming up in a number of forums. (Incidentally, known lists of spam names or spam URLs are the bases for some anti-spam blacklists. The disadvantage of such lists is that they are necessarily reactive, and there are so many spammers around putting out so much spam that their effectiveness is limited.)

Yeal I have been getting the same thing, Hello everyone by the way :) For the last couple weeks I have been getting email notest that I have a privite message in my inbox and I desided to popin to see what's up so found out is a spam message for a link for an video via YouTube, The URL look like it from Russa with the RU at the end of the link so I think the spammer need to somehow to be delted with I think..

What everyone else think about trying to have the spammers stop?

Is there any way to suspend people's PM privileges for the first 24-48 hours upon registration? Maybe an add on of sorts?

Not simply, no. Webbie and I do not get alerted for approving all new accounts, they just self-approve when the user responds to the system's automated return e-mail. Therefore, we would not be able to track new accounts, and keep their PMing knocked down for the first few days. If the Forum wanted to become a profit-making enterprise (sorry, bad joke, huh?) and this were my full-time job, I would *love* to put something like that in place, but right now, it would just slow down people's ability to join in the games right away and jump into an Academy easily.

Then again, if we blocked a SPAMmer's PMs, they would just start posting their junk right to the Boards, so there may never be a great solution.

Thanks.

Yes, I usually go through and suspend these members, but that doesn't retract their PMs. I tried deleting the latest one, yesterday, and that didn't retract the PMs either, but it did present some PMs as coming from "Deleted Member"

We have already posted a note to all, on the Boards, to not follow any link from anyone claiming to be part of the STSF admin teams (or really to follow links from anyone, unless they know the person and are expecting a link). Each time we hear about another spam PM, that person is disabled. Unfortunately, it is not all from the same domain or e-mail address, so we can't proactively block them from ever dropping by with their "gifts."

Thanks.
