Obama admits to being Vulcan

Precip already mentioned that Star Trek was featured on the cover of a recent issue of Newsweek. Well, when the Newsweek reporter was interviewing President Obama about his thoughts on his presidency thus far and some more general questions about his life, he asked what the most recent movie Obama had seen was....

And the last movie you saw?

Now, movies I've been doing OK [with] because it turns out we got this nice theater on the ground floor of my house … So Star Trek, we saw this weekend, which I thought was good. Everybody was saying I was Spock, so I figured I should check it out and—[the president makes the Vulcan salute with his hand].

Very good.

Yes, absolutely.

Did you watch that when you were growing up?

I used to love Star Trek. You know, Star Trek was ahead of its time. There was a whole—the special effects weren't real good, but the storylines were always evocative, you know, there was a little commentary and a little pop philosophy for a 10-year-old to absorb.

A lot of U.N. stuff.

Yes, exactly, right.

I sleep better knowing the leader of the free world with his finger on the launch button and a crippled economy to contend with owes his political philosophy to a camp 60's science fiction show, don't you guys?

Well, if I had to choose between a president who has a philosophy from Spock or the last one who seemed to get it from Elmer Fudd, I'll definitely take the former.

He's helped us understand what it means to be a cashless society, just like Trek!

As far as foreign policy, apparently he sees some wisdom in Elmer Fudd, because you can count the differences in foreign policy so far on one hand. Funny how 1960s idealism melts away when ones receives morning intelligence briefings.

Can I still post if I don't personally comment about our past and current states of presidential policy and presidents?

This thread is relatively innocuous, so I won't close it. Be warned that if we start getting into a more heated political discussion, it will be shut down. Discussions on politics and religion tend to create a lot of intense feelings and this Board isn't the place for them, just FYI.

That'd be funny except the recession started under the last guy's watch. :P

Personally, I think it's neat to have a Trek fan (however casual) in the White House.

I wonder what Sound System the Movie theatre in the White House has. I doubt Obama's kids were interested in watching it.

Oh and on a tangent note. Paramount was kind enough to transmit the movie up to the ISS for one of the astronauts to watch..appparently one likes Trek. However, I wonder the Russian astronaut's view on Chekov was.

Ron Moore said that one of the astronauts either on the ISS or one of the shuttles had BSG transmitted to him. So you have a guy *in* space watching a piece of fiction *about* space.

When this astronaut returned from space they gave him a cameo in Daybreak.
