Hello everyone! ^__^ (Quick question, also.)

Just an old roleplay junkie, deciding to jump in and see what's what.

I've got over a decade of roleplaying experience, and I'm looking to try something new. And as I've lately been getting very interested in the Star Trek universe, I've decided it's time to find one and try it out.

As for my question. What exactly is the policy on players creating new species for their characters? I've got an idea for my own in mind (rather basic details, really, nothing too articulated) but I don't want to spend too much time on it if there's going to be heavy opposition.

Any insight provided is definitely appreciated.

Oh, and I did my first academy sim the other day. Very fast paced and a little hard for me to follow, but still very enjoyable.

Hopefully in the next one I won't feel as though I'm drowning.

Hi - welcome to STSF. This is a wicked cool site to RP on.

The usual procedure is, after you "graduate" from the academy games and post to an advanced game, the new character and biography then comes into play. Any character, race established or not, is cleared by the games host team and all the games have different parameters for a new species introduction.

STSF has a few species that aren't canon that have been introduced: Agincourt's Resident Energy Being, Excal's Vampire and a Dameon canine humanoid, the Arcadia has a felinoid race character that is player conceived and separate from the canon Caitian feline race of Star Trek, etc.

The Academies can be fast paced, with all the text zooming, totally. I was able to trudge through my first few acads by relying on the book method mode of thinking - I just happened to be in the middle of a novel that I was reading that was real time text with me taking part in the action.

Have fun!

Caaga,

Great question. STSF has more of a "community" role-playing philosophy than an "individual" one. Teams and contributions from many players are generally favored over isolated individual role playing and "quick fix" characters.

As such, most GMs prefer that characters (whether canon or not) do not detract from the team atmosphere. Characters should have limitations (example, almost all sims forbid Q) and should engage in the main plot and not be isolated in their own "role playing" worlds or subplots that detract from the mission at hand.

These, of course, are generalities and do not apply in all circumstances.

Welcome to STSF, Caaga! Hope you have a fantastic time here! :)

Grom and Kansas pretty much covered this, but basically you go through the academy as a human character just so you can get used to the flow of the game, how the mechanics of it all work, and all that. Once you graduate and go to join an advanced sim, you can work with your GMs for that specific game to determine whether or not your race idea is one that they feel is appropriate.

It does take a little getting used to but don't despair. The more practice you get, the smoother it'll flow and it ends up being a heck of a good time! ;) Feel free to keep asking around if you have any more questions; everyone here is always glad to help out. Best of luck and again welcome!

That's an interesting technique. I'll have to try it out.

As anyone who has roleplayed at length knows, roleplaying with yourself is rather dull, and so is playing an overly-powerful character. I don't think there will be any problems in this regard.

I hope so. :)

Thanks for the replies everyone. I look forward to seeing you all on the roleplaying field.

Hiya.

Here's an example of the species that I created for the Arcadia (previously mentioned by Kansas.)

Daena

This might give you a slight idea of what a GM might be looking for if you decide to make your own race. It can get pretty detailed, and you'd definately want a way to tie it into the Federation, Starfleet, the universe, etc. If I may, and this is only a suggestion, I would stick with a canon race for your first advanced sim. Then if you decide to add another sim under your belt, then maybe you could make your own race. But like I said, just a suggestion. :)

Thank you so much for the link. I was trying to find an example of a player made species for just that reason.

As for your suggestion, I do appreciate it, but I don't see any advantage that would come from choosing a pre-accepted species as opposed to constructing my own. Besides, it'll be a great exercise in creativity. ^.^

If my species idea isn't approved, though, it's most likely I'll be playing a canon species anyway. And I'm sure the GM approving me will take into account that I'm new here, and will reflect it in their decision.
