Star Trek on SNL

I thought you'd guys would appreciate this. It stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto trying to convince the hardcore fans to give the new movie a chance. I thought it was pretty hilarious, especially at the end.

Meh...

I'm kinda bored with the geek stereotype joke. Unless its made endearing like Galaxy Quest it feels a little old. Im not saying it didn't make me chuckle and Nimoy's line was kickass. But in these days when A LOT of mainstream media is made by complete Trekkies (or Trekkers) and a huge amount of money is being made out of "geek" territory like this and the comic book franchises I just think the gag's worn itself out.

Am I on my own with this one?

No, guess you're not alone. But I want Quinto to mail me back my decapitated action figure. ;)

lol! This was hilarious!

I am with you on that Images, I am really getting tired of the geek stereotype. What is actually annoying, is when people see me and joke about how I don't look like, 'a geek'. But, still, this was high-frakkin-larious. Equal to the Tina Fey as Sarah Palin one.

Yeah, that's a characterization of geeks in years gone by. Today's geeks are far more emo.

We're always going to have the stereotype to deal with guys, as well as the "you don't look like a geek" statements in all the incarnations.

There are Trek fans who really are that way: the "I'm so into it I don't exist here in real life because Trek is more real to me" or the kind that can nitpick for twelve hours about what they perceive as a screwed up stardate or if the precious canon is violated.

Now granted, if a Trek fan is really sick, and Star Trek helps them get through it and they "go into" the world in order to escape pain and survive, then that's a different situation.

But the former group are the ones who cause all of us to be grouped into the overall prevelant stereotype of the Extreme Dork Phenomena.

I'm pretty sure using the word "phenomena" is a gateway word to dorkdum. :)

Come to think of it, I learned several words from Star Trek growing up including assimilate, nullify (some VOY episode where the bad guys run around saying it), data (not dahta)...the list goes on.

Haha. Actually, when my mum got sick, she watched BSG to get her through it.

Kansas: yeah. Why can't I be a geek and wear Kimono tops, and have people not say, 'you sure don't look like a geek. harharhar'. Bluddy frak...

Grom: I did too, such as 'Trek'.

If I wasn't so obsessed with just watching TOS I might be that way.
