Jolan Tru!

I'm new to this forum, and though I know all the basics of simming I've never really tried it before. I'm all exited about joining the U.S.S. Hood after I graduate. ;) That is, if I graduate. ;) I only really know TOS, so I'm not sure how I'll fair.

Hi and wecome to STSF. This is a wicked cool site to RP game on.

Only knowing TOS is not a problem. I'm a die hard TOS fan, and started as a newbie Player on the Hood, but now I find myself off on other ships set in different eras.

The sims/games here are all set in different eras mirroring the Trek shows/timelines, but all function pretty much the same: you have the Captain, First Officer and crew, the ship warps out, and the crew sets forth into adventure.

The academies are the same as well: one week you might be in TOS, the next week a DS9 era Dominion War adventure, or the next week a generic "lets repair the communications relay" plot not really set in any one era, just a general Trek adventure.

Welcome to STSF, Leila! I hope you have as great a time here as I have! ;)

Feel free to ask around if you have any questions -- we're a very friendly bunch. :P All of us have different levels of familiarity with different aspects of Star Trek so I wouldn't worry about that at all...the acad is all about getting familiar with all of that stuff and with the game so just do what you're comfortable with and everyone'll be glad to answer questions or give you help when you need it. And as Kansas said...there's a lot of different options for types of ships after you graduate and the academy'll give you a taste of lots of different types of plots so...just have an awesome time. ;)

Not to mention, a space station with budget cuts. Knowing only TOS is not a bad thing. I had absolutely no idea what the Dominion was when I joined, and I still faired pretty well. Really, after what Kansas and Sam said, there's not much else to say, except have fun, and beware N'Dak's academy sims. ^^

Okay, cool everyone! I was wondering, are Romulan/Human hybrids allowed in Starfleet or is that too dangerous?

Generally, that'll be up to whatever GM team you end up working with...once you get assigned to a ship you can discuss with them the sort of character you want to create. Bear in mind, though, that on a TOS sim Romulans are still something of a novelty to the Federation, I think...

But yeah...everyone is human in the Academies, and once you graduate and pick an advanced game, you can check for your GMs approval of the character you want to create. ;)

There were romulans in TOS... I really don't think most of the GMs have to many barriers for character race (except Q.... and borg), but really, it all depends on the Sim, and on the GM in question.

Thanks. ;) Is there anything else I need to know before I start the next academy session?

And what do you suppose are the best species to play as: Human, Vulcan, Catian, Andorian, or Romulan/Human?

Hiya. Most if not all advanced sims have a guideline and policy packet in their little forum on the board. So if you have any questions, you may be able to find what you are looking for there. Otherwise feel free to ask around.

And I'm a Human/Romulan, so I'm a little biased to your question. ;)

There is really no 'best' species to play. I play a Cardassian/Betazoid and a joined trill/betazoid, so I have a mix. I do enjoy having some form of telepathic or empathic species available, as it gives your character a boost, but really, what you do depends on what you want.

I meant as a favorite, but it's of no matter since I've already decided. I read through the logs and the U.S.S. Hood sounds like the most awesome coffee-donut-illogic-while-wearing-miniskirts-and-gogo-boots starship there ever was! ;)

This should bring a tear to Huff's eye. ;) Welcome, by the way.

When you discribe it that way, it makes me think STSF is even more of a madhouse then I thought. First we have the Arc (thats all you need to know...), a space station with budget cuts and recycled peanuts (packing peanuts no less), a futuristic war ship with Kansas, the Manticore (again, all you need to know), coffee-donut-illogic-while-wearing-miniskirts-and-gogo-boots starship, and N'Dak... need I go on? I am so glad I randomly googled the letters, STSF last year...

Do not feel bad about being primarily familiar with TOS - that is why I sought to join the Hood. So much happened with all other series that I didn't keep track of - there was no way I would be able to play effectively.

TOS is so much better for me; like a warm blanket I can wrap about my shoulders.

I've never felt bad about knowing mostly TOS. I'm a TOS purist and it's just weird when there's all the everything-trekkies I'm just the lil 60's Trekklet.
