STSF and the New Movie

Will STSF be doing anything special given the Star Trek movie coming out in less than a couple weeks? I think this is a great opportunity to expose new players to Trek as well as our forum. ;)

And the Talon's hosts will also not be around, but I've had a GM that said they'd show up for the timeslot for those not going until Friday.

I agree, but I'm not sure we have something more to offer players besides what we already do. If folks are involved in other groups/forums, feel free to chat us up (in fact, you don't have to wait in the new movie for that). Besides that, we go out of our way to keep off webrings and banner ads, as I have heard from a lot of people that they enjoy our ad-free environment here.

I'm open to suggestions (but send them to me at [email protected], it's better to keep them all from being dissected by everyone else).

Thanks.

Well, I'm going to wear my STSF polo shirt to the movie and have small cards with STSF info available for anyone who asks, but I'm gonna be careful and not hand them out willy-nilly. Don't want to get TOSsed out for soliciting ::eyeroll::

Get TOSsed out of the TOS era movie Commander? You're such a troublemaker. :-P

That's a great idea though - you never know!

This is relevant, so I'll share.

A very popular local radio show called "Preston and Steve" (they also podcast across the country) held a pre-premier party viewing of the new Trek film. Like the hosts of the radio show and thier assistants, the crowd that went to see the film with them was a mix of life long fans, casual fans, or had no clue about what Trek was.

During my commute, the morning crew was buzzing about the film, and said it was a nice "re-set" (to quote the life long fan, Steve) of the original Trek without crashing it down in flames or ripping Trek off. The previewers who were calling in all said the same thing: "I brought so and so with me, and they aren't a Trek fan, and they loved it" or "My significant other is a Trek fan, and they loved it".

Of note: Chris Pine/Kirk and my boy McCoy/Karl Urban were specifically mentioned, and the consensus was that the two actors carry thier new old roles very well.

Steve also mentioned that Karl Urban does a nice tribute to the legacy of DeForest Kelley (w00t!) in general, and I wanted to leap through the radio to hug Steve for coming right out and saying that. Coolness!

Is it my imagination or is the release date "more of a guideline than an actual rule" for this particular movie? ;)

These pre-premieres are all a part of marketing. Especially in an era of new media, even though only a handful (in terms of the U.S. population) have seen the movie, their thoughts, praises and quickly spread around the net. It helps build anticipation if the movie is good. If it's bad, well, then such previews can hurt a movie. I do think the hype of this movie has been very well executed, as compared to, say Star Wars: Episode 1. Perhaps though, I'm biased because I thought Episode 1 was just plain bad.

The video game industry does this in a similar way with demo disks, though, video game companies have much more stringent rules on release dates (like movie DVDs). Companies can get fined for putting out a release before its launch date. Years ago, when I was a teen and worked in the Toys R Us video game department, I remember management threatening that we would be fired if we sold something before its release date. Maybe a little over the top, but I understand the reasoning.

Ionno, just seems like there's been a *lot* more prerelease hype here than on most other movies that I can recall. It may be that I'm just paying more attention on this one though.

For the marketing/hype, I'm inclined to agree with Grom: as far as I can tell, the pre-release hype hasn't gone stupid.

Actually, I don't think this film *needs* a hype anyway what with the pre wrapped, built in, hard core fan base? I mean - we're one message board and we're buzzing along about it, just multiply that by the hundreds of Trekkers out there?

Okay, I have officially gone over to the Geeked Movie Hype Side. Toyz.

I zoomed over to Target on a lunch break run, and boom - spotted the Trek movie merchandise. My resolve weakened. Light shown down and illuminated the toy section. I may have heard angels, and they were humming the Trek theme.

I purchased a Cadet McCoy (no brainer for me, dontcha know) action figure, and the ship.

1.) The figures offered (6 inch and 3 inch), were incomplete (as in, I only spotted Scotty, Sulu, etc) and duplicates. I'm sure if you are the type that needs to track down that complete set, you're going to have to shop around.

The McCoy figure was the only one there, and I've been used to this for years; there are always figures that don't seem to go maintstream and are hard to find, and it always seems to be McCoy. For a while, I assumed it was due to the death of DeForest Kelley, but it would seem that Movie McCoy might be a bit scarce in the outlets as well.

2.) There are two playsets - transporter room and bridge. I don't do the playset thing, but heads up out there if any of you collectors are interested.

3.) The role playing items - I saw the phaser and the tricorder, there is also apparently a communicator, but I did not spot one - are way cheesy looking, IMO, from a manufactured standpoint. If you're a collector, you're probably good to go, but I'd say they will break pretty quick with any young kids, heads up.

4.) The Enterprise ship model/toy looks pretty dang cool! And of course we have the movie sound effects.

And no, I did not take the Enterprise out of the box to show people, but the McCoy toy has made an appearance in the office. :-P

What were we saying about the hype?

.....they have Kellogs Star Trek cereal. A co-worker grabbed a box and gave it to me. Yes, yes I am gleeful. But a bit disturbed at the same time ... cereal.

::totally goes off to find the milk::

Probably as amazingly strange, as the new star trek fragrances smell. I've heard there is one called, Pon Farr, for women. I am going to go to nordstroms to see if I can find some to smell.

But are they going to have the TOS medical salt shaker? Medically-minded types want to know...
