For you readers out there: Alan Dean Foster, who originally adapted the Original Series episodes into book format in the 70's, has returned (my local library used to have these adaption books - I totally should have "forgot" to return them).

Foster has penned the tie in book for the new Trek film, and per the Amazon site it will be available on May 12.

That's what I'm talking about - new and old aspects of the franchise coming together in what I hope is a kick azz jump start of boo yah Trek.

The Trek Fellow Geek Let's Grab Some Merchandise Network is in full swing.

A co-worker of mine grabbed a set of all 4 glasses for themselves and called me at the office to ask "do you want me to grab a set for you as well?" My answer in so many words was "yes, please woo hoo and I have the cash for you when you return."

Networking. I lovez it.

Folks, the 4 glasses retail for $2.00 each, and are about 6 oz. They are the heavy weight glass type (as in, not real flimsy), and the deco artwork is pretty tasteful. Of the set, Uhuru is the most striking, IMO, with Nero a close second. We are both in agreement that you do not want to run the glasses through the dishwasher, if you actually plan on using them.

The worker at the local Burger King (Eastern USA-ish) was telling my co-worker that they can't keep the glasses on the shelves, and they are going real fast. Don't know if this is the case across the country, but in my corner of the upper east coast area they seem to be the hot topic merchandise.

Nah, they always used to do something like this. I can remember having the Welch Grape Jelly glasses/jars that had Peanuts on them.

Remember what Yogurt said in Spaceballs:

Yogurt: Merchandising, merchandising, where the real money from the movie is made. Spaceballs-the T-shirt, Spaceballs-the Coloring Book, Spaceballs-the Lunch box, Spaceballs-the Breakfast Cereal, Spaceballs-the Flame Thrower.

Yes, I remember the excessive "branding" that was going on for 'STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE,' it was everywhere. In fact I recall a cartoon in The New Yorker at the time (I only read it for the cartoons) that looked like a table at a restaurant in Little Italy in NYC and there was an ashtray on the table imprinted with 'STAR TREK THE ASHTRAY'

i was always wondering where that spaceballs reference came from... i'm too young to remember that branding...

I am gonna try to convince someone with a car to take me to Burger King tonight, I think. I'm feeling like the last person in the world who hasn't seen these glasses.

i'm going to borger king right after arcadia tonight to get me some cups! i havent seen them either.

I misread that at first, and thought you said NASACAR. What does NASCAR stand for anyway?

LOL...I have tickets for that as well in 3 weeks..... Early warning for Republic crew... There is a small chance the I may not be back in time for the sim on Monday June 1st, it will depend on traffic. Then again, I suppose it would be ok....it would only be the 5th night I've not been able to make since 1995. lol.

Got 2 Kirk glasses last night. One to never open, one to open. (they are only doing one glass at a time) and I got the Kirk, Scotty and tricorder toys. Even better, the nice lady just let me buy them, without having to make the food purchase which was advertised as required. (cause I don't eat that stuff)

Wow. You're lucky. I don't really eat that stuff either, but sometimes, if I really need something with no food value, I go to burgermaster for a shake and fries.

I'm lucky there too. The one BK I went to sold me 2 glasses with no food purchase, but they only had 2 of the 4. The second BK I went to didn't was completely out and not sure when the next shipment will come in. I have 2 more BKs between where Im dog sitting at and my house to visit tomorrow to see if I can get Kirk and Spock.

And Yes the Movie IS a must see.

Yeah, the part that says Gene Roddenberry was the guy who invented Star Trek way back in the 40's or something. ;) ;) :P

KBear is right. It, like Nemesis, kind of broke that whole even-better-then-odd rule of Trek movies.

I must have gotten up on the right side of bed. I went to a BK closer to my house and they had all of the glasses. Better yet, they were selling an entire set for 6.99 and even though it said you needed to purchase one of the star trek meals to get it. they sold me a full set and all I bought was an Orange juice.

I tried. Didn't work. The people at the BKs in my area are very cranky...
