STSF Sorehl -> =/\= =/\= BEGIN CLASSROOM SESSION =/\= =/\=

Cmdr JFarrington -> ::in the classroom, ready for copious notes::licks her pencil:::

STSF Sorehl -> :::walks to the front podium::: Welcome.

WadeFKnight -> ::takes a seat::

STSF Sorehl -> In recent sessions, we've discussed alternate plot methods.

STSF Sorehl -> In our first week, we considered the free-form adventure, where the host may be open to the introduction of subplots - and could spin into the main story.

kirkriker -> ::has his padd ready::

STSF Sorehl -> In our second week, we considered the "scripted" plotline, where the host has a story prepared and ready to unfold.

kirkriker -> ::takes notes::

STSF Sorehl -> In both cases, we emphasized that players need to take cues from the host to determine whether they're free to improvise or whether they should stick to specific tasks.

STSF Sorehl -> This third discussion continues that theme...

STSF Sorehl -> Where the hosts have prepared a broad background, but are willing to let players (especially department heads) determine the general direction within the story they've crafted.

STSF Sorehl -> A somewhat "hybrid" plot.

STSF Sorehl -> In this case, the story presents a problem or situation. The players are free to investigate as they choose, but NOT necessarily to invent a solution - the host may already know what the cause is.

STSF Sorehl -> The big question for players is - how do you know what kind of plot you're in?

Cmdr JFarrington -> ::handraise:::

STSF Sorehl -> Jami?

Cmdr JFarrington -> Ask if plot elements can be changed or not?

kirkriker -> ::raises his hand as well::

STSF Sorehl -> Spot on. If in doubt, you can always ask via onscreen question in <<brackets>> or via PM.

STSF Sorehl -> Kirk?

kirkriker -> Would the number of Action statements have anything to do with it?

STSF Sorehl -> That's a good cue. If the host is issuing lots of descriptive ACTIONS, rather than action ACTIONS, it's a good bet they've creating a backstory with some events in mind.

Cmdr JFarrington -> ::good point, jots it down:::

STSF Sorehl -> Any other thoughts?

TKAR -> hi

STSF Sorehl -> Welcome, TKAR. We're in our classroom session - talking plot styles.

TKAR -> intesting

TKAR -> opps interesting

Cmdr JFarrington -> If you would like a post, please answer your PM. Thanks.

TKAR -> not used to this new keyboard yet

STSF Sorehl -> Each of you has played a number of Academy sessions - have you noticed these different plot styles? Do you have a preference among them?

WadeFKnight -> !

kirkriker -> !

TKAR -> Tkar::Raised hand::

STSF Sorehl -> Wade, you first.

WadeFKnight -> Aye. I personally prefer the more direct plots, with descriptive action statements, myself.

STSF Sorehl -> Then Kirk, then TKAR.

STSF Sorehl -> When you say direct, do you mean scripted? Driven by action statements?

WadeFKnight -> ::nods::

STSF Sorehl -> As a player, I tend to prefer those, too. Kirkriker?

TKAR -> ::listens::

kirkriker -> I have and I prefer the free-form, where we (the players) can decide where it goes.

kirkriker -> Although Wade does make a good point

STSF Sorehl -> And right there, we see what's nice about the Academy and differing styles in the Advanced Sims. It gives everyone a taste of what they prefer.

STSF Sorehl -> The free-form also tends to allow more character background, although scripted plots can do this "between takes".

STSF Sorehl -> TKAR?

TKAR -> ::nods agreement to STSF SOREHI::

STSF Sorehl -> Alright, our time is waning... so I'll turn some time over to Jami.

TKAR -> I like all of them as the vulcans say IDIC

Cmdr JFarrington -> I think he's afk

Cmdr JFarrington -> All righty....

STSF Sorehl -> Ah, there she is.

STSF Sorehl -> :::gestures to the holodeck as the doors open:::

Cmdr JFarrington -> ::following the herd:::

WadeFKnight -> <CSCI> ::heads on in::

STSF Sorehl -> ACTION: The interior of the holodeck is the cramped corridor of a non-Federation starship.

Cmdr JFarrington -> ::is cramped:::

Cmdr JFarrington -> ::loosens her collar:::

TKAR -> <<i might be a little slow still learning to use window vista<<different from windows xp>>

STSF Sorehl -> MISSION BRIEFING: The Defiant-class starship Ardent has discovered a derelict ships drifting just outside Breen space.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <No problem, TKAR. Just do your best.>

STSF Sorehl -> (cont'd) An away team, consisting of the players, is just beaming over to determine more about the ship and what happened to it.

TKAR -> :(

STSF Sorehl -> =/\= =/\= BEGIN SIM =/\= =/\=

STSF Sorehl -> =/\= =/\= BEGIN SIM =/\= =/\=

STSF Sorehl -> ACTION: The away team "shimmers" onto the unfamiliar ship, of unknown class and origin.

WadeFKnight -> <CSCI> ::shimmer/deshimmer::

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::is shimmered and feels cramped and very strange:: <all> Everyone all right? :;as she looks around:::

Cmdr JFarrington -> <life support, lights, or not?>

kirkriker -> <CSEC>::all ready shimmered::

WadeFKnight -> <CSCI> ::nods:: Aye, okay over here, Commander. ::breaks out his tricorder::

kirkriker -> <CSEC>::pulls out his phaser and looks around::

STSF Sorehl -> ACTION: There is minimal life support on the ship, dim lights, and no life signs.

kirkriker -> <CSEC>Fine here.

TKAR -> <CMO>::shinner, Pulls out med tricorder scanning for life forms of any kind::

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> <all> Good enough. ::checks and sees TKAR::: Check your EV suits. Looks like we're in strange country.

STSF Sorehl -> ACTION: Tricorder registers several organic signs down the corridor, but no associated energy readings.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> +Ardent+ Away team transport successful. Minimal life support, minimal power. ::looks to TKAR:: Life forms?

kirkriker -> <CSEC>::looks to the doctor to see what the med tric says::

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> <CSEC> Mr. Kirkriker, keep your team on its toes.

STSF Sorehl -> <CO> +XO+ Acknowledged.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::knowing it will take a minute in these strange surroundings for TKAR to get a good reading:::

kirkriker -> <CSEC>::nods::Aye, Commander

TKAR -> <CMO>::checks suit ::<XO>scanning it seems there are lifeforms ::Points to the right:: at 4745.0 they are alive but unkown life.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> <CSCI> Looks like some kind of organic hybrid ship to me. Thoughts?

Cmdr JFarrington -> <oops, TKAR. Check the action statement>

STSF Sorehl -> ACTION: Although there are organic readings, there are no life forms.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> <CMO> ::nods, waiting for Wade's assessment:::

WadeFKnight -> <CSCI> ::shakes his head, musing:: I'm not quite sure, commander. I'm detecting quite a large amount of organic material, but no energy readings.

WadeFKnight -> <CSCI> I think that may be a safe hypothesis, however.

kirkriker -> <CSEC>::motions to the two other sec officers to be ready::

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::nod to CSCI:: <CSEC> Mr Kirkriker, let's find the bridge. Take point. Cover our backs with your team.

WadeFKnight -> <CSCI> ::follows::

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::to no one in particular:: If there is a bridge.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::flashing her wrist light around to check her bearings, following Riker, feeling quite safe:::

TKAR -> <CMO><XO>sorry sir,my readings are erractic ::Resetting med tricorder::These new medical tricorders still have some bugs to the programming.

STSF Sorehl -> <CO> +XO+ Ops confirms some evidence of weapons damage to the outside of this craft, in what conjecturally looks like the engineering section...

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::stops to looks at TKAR:: <CMO> Understood. I'm not surprised that the readings are off, given the strange nature of this ship.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::stops to listen::

STSF Sorehl -> ACTION: The team approaches one of the first signs of organics in the corridor.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> +CO+ Should we investigate that area first, Captain?

kirkriker -> <CSEC>::is on point with NPCSECS at the flank::

kirkriker -> <<sorry was afk>>

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> <np>

STSF Sorehl -> <CO> +XO+ As you see fit, Commander.

kirkriker -> <CSEC>::looks for the signal to continue::

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> +CO+ Very well, sir. We'll head to the bridge first to see if we can find any records - logs or what hae you. Then check out engineering. Any danger of explosion at this point?

TKAR -> <CMO>::nods to XO::<XO>intersting readings i wonder if the ship is alive maybe it feels.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::nods to CSEC to continue:::

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::as she walks:: <CMO> Alive? Explain.

STSF Sorehl -> ACTION: There is a broken and oozing body in the corridor as the team moves forward. The body is the source of one of the organic readings.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::flashing her light around, checking this and that::

kirkriker -> <CSEC>::continues::

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::is behind Riker so she does not see the body:: <CSCI> Your assessment, Mr. Knight?

kirkriker -> <CSEC>::poitns phaser at the body then lowers it::

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::senses Riker stop:: <CSEC> What's the .... oh. ::glances down::

kirkriker -> <CSEC><XO>::startled::Ma'am

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::hard swallow:: <CSEC/CSCI> Alive?

Cmdr JFarrington -> <by broken, do you mean literally or just wounded?>

WadeFKnight -> <CSCI> ::takes a look at the body:: <XO> Certainly not, sir.

kirkriker -> <CSEC><XO>I doubt it.<CMO>what was it? Can you tell Doc?

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::headshake:: <CSCI> Can you tell the species?

STSF Sorehl -> ACTION: The alien body has been smashed, with significant internal damage, broken skeleton, and ruptured organs.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::holding back an urp::

TKAR -> <CMO>::walks scanning the ship::<XO>scientists imagine a living ship like us it is comporal ,it feels,loves,mates but its just a theory from ancient prehistroy of some races.

WadeFKnight -> <CSCI> ::shakes his head:: <XO> I'm afraid I'm not up to par on my alien physiology, TKAR. What do you make of this?

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> <CMO> ::points to the body::

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> +CO+ Found a body, sir. Stand by for report.

kirkriker -> <CSEC>::motions to the NPCSEC's to form a defensive perimiter around the AT::

STSF Sorehl -> ACTION: The alien species is not in the Federation database, much like the ship design. The body is orange skinned, white-haired, with nickel-based blood.

STSF Sorehl -> <CO> +XO+ Understood.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::kneels down:: <CSCI> Got any sample kits with you?

WadeFKnight -> <<brb>>

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> <he's going for sample kits - hold on :D >

TKAR -> <cmo>::Scanning the body::<CSCI><XO>unknown readings it maybe this ship interfring from my scannings or some kind of bio weapon i need more data .

kirkriker -> <CSEC><XO>permission to send Crewman Chell ahead as a scout?

STSF Sorehl -> << TKAR, please note ACTION statement above. >>

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> <CSEC> Good idea.

kirkriker -> <CSEC>::motions to the Bolian NPC next to him::

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> <copy and paste works for me, TKAR :D >

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::Pressing the video feed on her helmet::: +CO+ Sending you video feed, Captain. Do you receive?

TKAR -> <opps><,Havent done on this yet>>

STSF Sorehl -> <CO> +XO+ We're receiving you, Commander... :::pause::: Not a species I'm familiar with, although the body appears badly damaged.

STSF Sorehl -> <CO> +XO+ Is there any sign of how this individual expired? Explosion? Weapons fire? Pathogen?

kirkriker -> <Crewman Chell>::goes ahead and scouts with his phaser and tric ready::

TKAR -> <CMO>+<xo>::still scanning::What do you think it is sir?

WadeFKnight -> <<back>>

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> +CO+ Very damaged, Sir. Mr. Knight is getting some samples as we speak. ::to Kirkriker::: <CSEC> Your assessment of the possible weapon?

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> +CO+ Checking now sir.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <Greets, Vil>

TKAR -> <<hi v>>

WadeFKnight -> <CSCI> ::getting samples::

WadeFKnight -> <<Heya Vil!! ::waves::>>

STSF Sorehl -> ACTION: Chell reports another similarly smashed body up ahead in the corridor, but no sign of explosion.

Vilanne -> <<Howdy everyone!>>

kirkriker -> <CSEC><XO>It looks like a high power experimental Romulan disupter rifle to me.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::hearing Chell's report::: <CMO> Evidence of bioweapons or otherwise?

STSF Sorehl -> ACTION: There is no sign of energy damage to the bodies.

kirkriker -> <Crewman Chell>::stops by another body::

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> <CSEC> Really? That would be strange. Check your readings again.

kirkriker -> <Crewman Chell>continues and gets to the Bridge door.

kirkriker -> <CSEC>::double checks his readings::

TKAR -> <CMO>::Rechecks medical tricorder::<+ALL>anything is possible,we just have to figure out the inpossible.

kirkriker -> <Crewman Chell>+CSEC+I've reached the bridge door sir. It appears to be sealed.

kirkriker -> <CSEC><XO>correction no weapons fire just work of bare hands

kirkriker -> <CSEC><XO>Crewman Chell has arrived at the bridge and reports it's sealed

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> <CMO> I need some definitive answers, Doctor. <CSEC> Bare hands. Must have been some massive hands, but I guess it's possible.

STSF Sorehl -> << Remember, to get ACTIONS which describe things, you may have to prompt your host by saying you're looking at something or for something. >>

TKAR -> <CMO>::Still scanning::<+csec>The bridge could be a trap.

STSF Sorehl -> << Don't just guess at what you see if you haven't asked. >>

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::hard think at CSEC's report:: <CSEC> Very well. Let's get to engineering.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> +CO+ Security reports the bridge is sealed. We're moving to engineering.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::hand wave for all to make an about-face in the cramped corridor:::

kirkriker -> <CSEC>+Crewman Chell+Very well report back on the double.

STSF Sorehl -> <CO> +XO+ Understood.

kirkriker -> <Crewman Chell>+CSEC+aye.::hustles back::

STSF Sorehl -> <CO> +XO+ I'm concerned that we have no information about a species that has drifted out from Breen space...

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> <all> Hopefully there will be some aux consoles there where we can access information. Be advised, the Ardent OPS has reported damage to engineering from an external source. Might be hull breaches as well.

STSF Sorehl -> <CO> +XO+ Especially after we've had no contact from the Breen, hostile or otherwise, in months.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::stops to answer:: +CO+ Agreed, Sir. Suggested course of action?

STSF Sorehl -> <CO> :::pause::: +XO+ Negative, I trust your judgment. But gather any data we can about who these people are... or were.

kirkriker -> <CSEC>::motions the NPCSEC's to form the perimieter again as Crewman Chell rejoins them and takes point::

STSF Sorehl -> ACTION: The away team encounters two more broken and bruised bodies in the corridors, heading down toward engineering.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> +CO+ Aye, Sir. We're on our way to engineering. Hopefully there will be data access there. ::waves a hand at CSEC to continue:::

kirkriker -> <CSEC>::gets a thought::<CSCI>are there any signs that it may have come through a wormhole?

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::getting really uncomfortable stepping over bodies::

TKAR -> <CMO>::nods to XO::<XO>all i know this ::Points to bod::,is nothing i see in my years as a doctor,Maybe its a dease like chicken pocks or something else,i don,t know.

kirkriker -> <CSEC>::still at point::

STSF Sorehl -> ACTION: There is evidence of tissue scraped all along the walls of the corridor leading to the bodies.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::continues video feed:: <CMO> Looks like some kind of weapons damage to me, Doctor. I could be wrong.

kirkriker -> <CSEC><CSCI>or trans-dimensional rift?

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::leans against the corridor wall inadvertantly, pressing into the goo:::

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::feels the suck:: Ohhh...that's not right.

STSF Sorehl -> <CO> +XO+ Interesting. Have all of the bodies been found on that side of the corridor?

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::hard swallow:: +CO+ Sir, there is only one side of the corridor, very cramped. We have to step over the bodies, but I do have a signifigant sample on my EVA suit. We're going to need decontam when we return.

WadeFKnight -> <CSCI><CSEC> ::quirks his brow at KR, but shakes his head nevertheless:: I'm not seeing anything here ::pours over the data on his tricorder::

kirkriker -> <CSEC><CSCI>::nods still walking::

STSF Sorehl -> ACTION: The team arrives in an open area with a rudimentary warp engine at the center.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::at last, an open area::pause to take it in:::

STSF Sorehl -> ACTION: There are six bodies up against the wall on two levels, all seemingly smashed and broken like the others. Pools of orangish blood trail down that same wall.

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::moves to the engine, noting it is primitive by our standards:::

kirkriker -> <CSEC><XO>M'am i have some Eng training, would you like me to try to reactivate some systems?

TKAR -> <CMO>::Nods to XO::<ALL>if it is a weapon we are in big trouble or its somekind of ritual killings.<ALL>what do you think it is?

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> ::soooo glad she cannot smell it all:::

STSF Sorehl -> <1 minute>

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> <CSEC> Do it.

kirkriker -> <CSEC>::goes to what looks like a main control panel::

Cmdr JFarrington -> <XO> <CSEC> See if you can get any information on how all this happened, where they came from -- anything.

kirkriker -> <CSEC>::pushes a few buttons and the panel lights up::

TKAR -> <<,JUST heard leonard nimoy voice on fringe>>

STSF Sorehl -> And...

STSF Sorehl -> =/\= =/\= PAUSE SIM =/\= =/\=

STSF Sorehl -> =/\= =/\= PAUSE SIM =/\= =/\=

STSF Sorehl -> First, any Hood players, please feel free to skedaddle.

TKAR -> Great sim

STSF Sorehl -> Any thoughts on tonight? Can you tell which plot style was in use?

kirkriker -> kind of a hybrid?

Cmdr JFarrington -> I'll vote for scripted strict action.

STSF Sorehl -> Right. I had a plot in mind and players were moving around at their own pace, discovering the details.

STSF Sorehl -> Heh, Jami.

Cmdr JFarrington -> Ooookkk..

TKAR -> i think it was both

STSF Sorehl -> I trust players caught my advice earlier, but I didn't see any change in pacing.

Cmdr JFarrington -> heckofa lotta action statements for that, Captain.

Cmdr JFarrington -> :D

STSF Sorehl -> It hard to describe EVERYTHING, so it helps when players prompt the story-telling by saying what they're looking at or looking for.

STSF Sorehl -> There was a lot of leaps to possible conclusions without a lot of taking in evidence.

kirkriker -> ?

STSF Sorehl -> Kirkriker?

kirkriker -> Like when I asked about the trans-dimensional rift and the wormhole? for the prompting

STSF Sorehl -> Well, that's not prompting - it more like guessing and asking if it's right.

STSF Sorehl -> For example, I heard bioweapons, Romulans, chicken pox - none of which were related to the fact that the ships inertial systems failed and its crew was crushed by acceleration.

kirkriker -> well, prompting for a prompt.

Cmdr JFarrington -> heh Riker.

TKAR -> good point i didn’t think of it>

STSF Sorehl -> A player could ask, Did a time traveler come back and kill them? But how would one answer that via ACTION statement?

Cmdr JFarrington -> Action> a time traveler did not come back and kill them :)

Cmdr JFarrington -> Sorrysorry..had to do it.

STSF Sorehl -> Heh. I should keep that as a macro.

TKAR -> <<Star trek 11>

STSF Sorehl -> That's the NEXT movie's plot.

TKAR -> YES

TKAR -> it looks great

STSF Sorehl -> Rather, one could hypothesize - a time traveller came back and killed them - but you would PROMPT for evidence to support this, like...

STSF Sorehl -> :::scans for temporal particles:::

STSF Sorehl -> Or :::searches for tachyon residue:::

TKAR -> a yes

STSF Sorehl -> Or even, :::looks for items out of place technologically::: as a stretch.

STSF Sorehl -> So, wilder theories are OK, but blurting them out doesn't solve the plot unless you find or look for something to back up the idea.

TKAR -> i get your point didn,t think of that

Cmdr JFarrington -> !

STSF Sorehl -> Jami?

Cmdr JFarrington -> My next guess would have been that the crew was crushed by some kind of weapon other than an energy weapon. I never would have guessed IDS failure.

Cmdr JFarrington -> But I think when we got into engineering we would have found more evidence to point in that direction.

STSF Sorehl -> I agree. The team hadn't seen enough evidence to make a correct guess - but that didn't stop some of the guessing.

Cmdr JFarrington -> But, hey - I got lotsa goo on my EVA suit. Want some?

STSF Sorehl -> And engineering would have given more hints - like the very basic warp drive.

Cmdr JFarrington -> :::nod::

TKAR -> sorry my printer loss power

STSF Sorehl -> Kirkriker was heading toward more evidence...

Cmdr JFarrington -> That he was.

STSF Sorehl -> ...starting up the system would have shown some alert messages, perhaps even a large blinking "IDF failure" - if we could understand it.

Cmdr JFarrington -> And..given that the species was unknown, the UT may have had a problem with that.

STSF Sorehl -> Of course, even knowing it was an IDF failure could lead to the follow-up question: Why did the IDF fail?

STSF Sorehl -> Right. Engineering might have had to probe around to figure out the inertial damperners had a problem.

STSF Sorehl -> Remember, there was some external weapons damage, according to Ops.

Cmdr JFarrington -> That's what I was keying in on.

Cmdr JFarrington -> Anyway...

STSF Sorehl -> Well, point made. Good play - it just took awhile to reach plot points and we ran outta time.

STSF Sorehl -> Any questions for me, from the group?

Cmdr JFarrington -> So many bodies, so little time. ::sigh::

STSF Sorehl -> It was almost an NDak Academy.

Cmdr JFarrington -> yep

TKAR -> no it was a very interesting fun sim

STSF Sorehl -> OK, then. Dismissed!
