Romulan Stories

Abe stared at the Main Viewer where the Romulan D-7 was displayed. He’d heard stories about them while growing up on his family’s cargo ship, the ECS Fortunate III. “Romulan’s are …” the story would go, or “Captain Kirk on the Enterprise said …” and rumor would feed what else Abe picked up about Romulans when at home on Earth, or while they were at a trading post on some planet.

It had been almost 30 years ago, standard Earth time, when engineering legend Montgomery Scott saved the Enterprise after the Romulans had destroyed Star Base 2, 3, and even 4 as the Enterprise watched. It was always rumored that Kirk got the idea to lure the Romulan ship by playing dead from Montgomery who had experience and a knowledge of ships and the tricks their engineers can make them do.

…. and spoke of them often when the captain was buying. No matter what station the Fortunate called upon, someone had a Romulan story. The Enterprise had visited many of them, and Abe as a young man visited them too, years later. “I talked with Scott when he came in here for a drink, years ago! “He told us what the Romulans looked like, and the old Earth submarine trick he’ been telling the Captain about just the week before they ….”

How he loved those stories, and the way the engineer behind the scenes really was the one who saved the day! And now, he’d seen a Romulan himself, and soon, he’d have stories to tell about them, too.
