“Explanation”

“The future is the past, the past is the future. It all gives me a headache.”

~ Admiral Kathryn Janeway, “Future’s End, Part I”

Garnoopy glanced around the assembled personnel. They stood, looking at him, around the pool table, waiting. Garnoopy didn’t keep them waiting for more than a second, while he quietly remembered his Starfleet training. He had gone as far as you could in temperal mechanics, only needing to actually travel through time to learn all you could, and that was illegal, so it had never happened before.

Garnoopy began speaking. “Alright, lets start from the beginning. Excuse the amount of time this will take, but I want to make sure that everyone understands how this started, what has happened, and what our present situation is.”

“The catalyst for all of this was the quantum singularity. Quantum singularities as we all know are very rare. In natural cases they are caused by a collapsing neutron star, which results in an object so dense that neither matter nor light can escape its gravity. It sucks everything around it straight in. Romulans use quantum singularities as power sources, harnessing the gravimetric pull to create energy for their ships. The Federation and Klingon Empire do not use singularities, due to their extreme danger. Once a singularity is opened, it cannot be closed.”

“No one is quite sure what exactly is at the center of a singularity, as to whether it is a hole in space to some unknown location, or it just manages to somehow condense matter small enough to fit into it we are not sure. We’ve never been able to get close enough to find out.”

“Ok, that being said, lets talk about time for a moment. Lets think about time as parallel lines. Imagine millions of straight lines laid out next to each other. Each one of these lines is a reality. Each reality is slightly different. Some in such small ways it is impossible for anyone to tell, but they are all different. In this timeline, I have chosen the career of a Starfleet medical officer, but in another timeline, I could be a musician, or I could be building starships back on Earth. Or, I could be dead. Each timeline is different in some way, shape, or form.”

“Reality A as we know it, is a timeline in which a Federation Galaxy class starship, the Lakota, and a Klingon Vorcha class starship, the IKC Qob have been lost in the Delta Quadrant, and the ships and crew were combined.”

“Reality B as we know it, is a timeline in which a Federation Galaxy class starship, the Lakota, this ship, and a now destroyed Klingon Vorcha class starship, the IKC Qob are in the Alpha Quadrant, apparently not happy with each other for we obviously battled. We are not a combined crew.”

“Let me explain the sequence of events here.”

“First, in Reality A, a quantum singularity is opened. The singularity is not stable, for unknown reasons. Plasma is fed into the singularity in an attempt to contain it and prevent an explosion which would result in the destruction of the combined IKC Qob Lakota. The plasma creates an unknown variable in the singularity, and the singularity does explode, but not as it should have. If the singularity had exploded on its own, it would have destroyed the IKC Qob Lakota, and we wouldn’t’ be having this discussion. However, the plasma being fed into it, caused the singularity to form micro wormholes in the center of them.”

“Ok, these micro wormholes are one way road. Information goes in one way, and comes out the other.”

“When the quantum singularity on this combined ship, the IKC Qob Lakota, went to explode, it basically shattered, and instead of exploding and destroying the ship. One larger one of these quantum singularity micro wormholes latched onto the IKC Qob Lakota’s warp core, and began to suck plasma out of it. The singularity, by complete coincidence, began to send the plasma across time to Reality B, where we are right now, directly into our warp core.”

“The smaller singularities, which were sent all over by the shattering quantum singularity, latched onto the memory engrams of every single person on board the Reality A IKC Qob Lakota. Memory engrams have a very specific frequency, and when they began to suck information out of Reality A, the ending dumping point latched onto each of our own specific minds. Meaning, the information sucked out of the Dr. Garnoopy on board the Reality A IKC Qob Lakota, is being put into Reality B’s Dr. Garnoopy on board this ship. The same goes for all of your memories.”

“So, each one of us here is latched onto ourselves in Reality A. So is our warp core. However, in Reality A, there is still a crew alive and working. They are running the combined ship, the IKC Qob-Lakota.”

“So, we have two timelines. We have Reality A, the combined IKC Qob Lakota, and Reality B, the separate ships. Both timelines are still working.”

“However, I do not believe the people in Reality A will be surviving much longer. The quantum singularities are sucking their memories out, transporting them through them, and dumping them into our minds. It is only a matter of time before the basic memory instinct of breathing, blinking, seeing, and all other functions disappears, and they no longer have the ability to support their own bodies. They will forget how to live, and they will die because we are receiving their memories.”

“Eventually, if our warp core survives long enough, the plasma flow will stop once the Reality A IKC Qob Lakota runs out of plasma to send. I have no idea how long that will take, but it will happen.”

“Ok, so, we have two realities. Reality A, and Reality B. The people in Reality A are loosing their memories, due to quantum singularities sucking them out and putting them in Reality B’s heads.”

“Now, I already said there is no way to shut down a quantum singularity. None that is known of at least. I believe though that once all matter that the singularities can absorb has been absorbed, they will die off naturally. Meaning, once all the memories from Dr. Garnoopy in Reality A have been transferred to me, he will die over there, and the singularity that was feeding the memories to me will dissipate naturally. However, Dr. Garnoopy in Reality A will be dead. He will have forgotten how to live.”

“Even if we managed to cut the singularities right now, all the people in Reality A would have forgotten everything that we now know. I remember the Dr. Garnoopy from Reality A being thrown into the Delta Quadrant, however, that Dr. Garnoopy won’t remember that. He will have forgotten.”

“I understand we all want to get back to Reality A, where we remember being a crew together, but there already is a Reality A crew out there, and there is no way that we can transfer ourselves to that timeline and still live.”

“It is possible to go back in time, it is possible to go forward in time, it is possible to come across a natural hole in the separation of the realities, but none of these possibilities we can accomplish. We do not have the power or ability to travel back or forward in time, let alone manage to stumble across a hole in the space time continuum to just by complete and utter coincidence manage to land in Reality A. The odds against that happening are staggering, and they are so staggering that I hold no hope for us to have that happen.”

“I believe we are stuck here, and we have to find a way to ensure that this Reality A IKC Qob Lakota crew survives, and that we survive. I don’t’ think we can."
