The K'hals, an opportunistic group, won through crafty intelligence and good planning an early generation K't'inga class battlecruiser shortly before the fall of the moon Praxis. The move served them well as the Caitian approach of remaining on the sidelines become impossible after that point. The vessel and its operating family have fared well through the years, and the K'hal family has served as a quiet but effective "hired gun" since that day, offering the services of their ship to the highest bidder, either as a protective escort or an attacking force. Of course neither Romulan or Terran Empire alike could overlook this rather powerful mercenary force, but careful job selection, prudent use of the cloak, and a penchant for stealth has allowed the SS Fr'Ankhish to slip through more than one trap over the years. Their relations with the Romulan Empire have improved over recent years as they've accepted jobs of infiltrating the Terran Empire to conduct surveillance or rescue captured RSE personnel. Imperial Starfleet has standing orders to destroy the ship on sight.

The Fr'Ankhish of course requires more than a small family group to run, and other families have been recruited over the years, and the ship has had an excellent reputation of taking in those strays that have suffered loss of clan due to engagements with either Empire or through employer treachery. There are even former slaves of various races serving aboard the ship if they have skills of any use and have proven loyal to the K'hals. Command of the vessel has not passed down through any set gender bias, as both Clan Mother and Clan Father alike have been appointed based on ability.

The current Clan Mother, Kharril, is an excellent example of Caitain patience and ferocity. Capable of unleashing vicious tongue-lashings or well targeted cuffs to the head, she's also a sniper and expert in hand to hand. She's more than willing to get her paws dirty if the situation reuires it. Her husband JoLan, more staid and intelletual, has served as a perfect counterpoint to her fiery nature and is a very capable ship commander and Clan manager in his own right.

That kind of life however did not serve a young cub named Mreh, eldest son of Kharril and JoLan, who really felt no special attachment to the lifestyle, but instead on a more individual basis cared for the health and well-being of body and mind, fascinated with the ins and outs of the body. While his parents hoped this phase would pass, they did see the excellent possibility of having a fully trained doctor on board the Fr'Ankhish, and so allowed him to attend the medical school on Bajor under an assumed identity, after paying a heavy Imperial tariff for being non-Terran plus the usual tuition. He was watched closely during this period for any signs of disloyalty to the Empire or other problems, but nothing ever came of it.

After graduating with good scores and receiving his medical license, instead of returning to the Fr'Ankhish he swore an Oath of Fealty to the Terran Empire, and was purchased as an indentured servant by Starfleet. The contract would put him in the Imperial Navy's service for thirty years, and completion of the contract would grant him freedom, a lump sum payment, and papers to live anywhere in the Empire but Earth itself, though without full citizenship rights. The K'hals were by no means amused when they discovered this, and have officially expelled him from the Clan. As of yet his connections to the K'hal family have not been discovered, and the Caitian family Errahl on Cait has continued to provide cover as his relatives because Mreh has taken over the semi-annual payments to them that the K'hals had dropped when they discovered his choice to serve Starfleet.

Initially working around some of the Empire's more remote facilities, Mreh was eventually assigned as medical officer aboard the Excalibur out on the frontier, where he serves currently. While generally loathed as an outsider, his medical skills have saved more than one life and his gentle humor and open good naturedness have won him a few allies who understand the value of a steady servant.
