NASA asking for votes on new Station Module

I'm fairly certain there are quite a few Firefly fans in our community, so I figure I ought to mention that one of the names of a future section of the International Space Station is being selected by the general public. Interestingly enough, one of the top selections in the voting/naming/selecting is Serenity.

I think it would be pretty cool to have a section of the ISS named after the movie of your favorite TV Show.

Ya, I noticed that too. Something tells me that NASA'll be launching the Serenity soon.

Keep Flyin' - that's pretty neat, if the name Serenity is used. But, par for the course: Enterprise shuttle from 1974.

After reviewing and voting on this module, I wonder more about what the astronauts will call it. Considering how much of the station's waste processing will be moved into it, and the wonderful views that will be available from it, well, suffice it to say that I think they'll be keeping their reading materials in it too.

WASHINGTON – NASA's online contest to name a new room at the international space station went awry. Comedian Stephen Colbert won.

The name "Colbert" beat out NASA's four suggested options in the space agency's effort to have the public help name the addition. The new room will be launched later this year.

NASA's mistake was allowing write-ins. Colbert urged viewers of his Comedy Central show, "The Colbert Report" to write in his name. And they complied, with 230,539 votes. That clobbered Serenity, one of the NASA choices, by more than 40,000 votes. Nearly 1.2 million votes were cast by the time the contest ended Friday.

NASA reserves the right to choose an appropriate name. Agency spokesman John Yembrick said NASA will decide in April, but will give top vote-getters "the most consideration."

Oh...that's just unfortunate.

I love Stephen Colbert, but... ;)

The station section name choice should be made from the four proposed NASA choices, not based on some git comedian's name who urged his viewers to write in on some self-promotional jack @ss lark.

Yes, stupid and juvenile stunts tend to annoy me in general. Yes, I feel as if Serenity should win.

My bet is that NASA will d the right thing, and, while thank Stephen Colbert for the suggestion, go with the top "official" winning name from the contest.

Honestly, if something like this had happened back in the 70s, do you think NASA wouldn't have given us the Shuttle Enterprise anyway? Besides all the fans of TOS, there were too many veterans of USS Enterprise CV-6 and CVN-65 to annoy with a goofy stunt like that.

I just go out of my mind when people like Colbert pull stuff like that. Okay, so basically you're telling me I should de-flare and such? :-P

I assume Serenity had the next highest votes after write in boy; c'mon NASA, do your "reserve the right" thing!

Shoot, I think it would be awesome if they named it Colbert. The Colbert Report is my favorite comedy show. I'm not a big Firefly fan either.

Well, Tranquility is close enough to Serenity for me; I can handle that. I'm just thrilled that PITA boy's name wasn't used for the node.

Colbert? For the exercise treadmill? Appropriate: he gave NASA a run, so let the astronauts have a run on him.

So wait...did Serenity not win the vote anyway? Or did NASA just decide to pull a Soloman and avoid the whole rigamarole altogether?

::mildly disappointed::

I'm still okay with Tranquility, but in deference to the second largest cult fan following in Sci Fi history - that node should be called Serenity.

I'm involved with a forum based simm in another organization that is nicknamed Tranquility. So I'm extremely happy :D I think Stephen got a fair cut with his own official NASA acronym.
