Crewman Kent

The Unsung Heroism of Crewman Kent

“The Unsung Heroism of Crewman Kent” (In Iambic Pentameter)

'Tis late at night while the officers sleep,

And the enlisted men watched over them,

One crewman above all takes precedent:

Crewman Kent, engineering specialist,

Who saves the ship on a frequent basis.

Faster than a speeding hyperspanner,

Leaping tall consoles in a single bound,

Kent saves the day, saves the ship, saves the crew.

Consoles beep and conduits overload,

Systems malfunction, rendering peril.

Without Crewman Kent's wit and daring skills,

Soon comes the ship into Death's shadow pale.

Strong as one thousand men, Kent will prevail:

Crewman Kent turns the tide and wins the day,

Verily, a hero, unknown, unsung.

Once, the spotted chief bought a faulty cloak.

An alien prototype, the device

Worked not with the ship's systems and soon failed,

Nearly killing another officer.

Kent stepped in; he fixed the cloaking device.

Thankfully, all was well once again.

Yet no one thanked him, so he glares at them.

Another time, around a library,

The ship tried to download all the archives,

In spite of a lack of memory space.

The gods laughed at the officers' hubris:

With the download complete the core would fry,

Save for Kent's quick compression algorithm,

Which preserved the data and the system.

Oh, Crewman Kent, we owe you a great debt.

Indeed, one could wonder, could ponder, ask:

Will Kent ever feel glory's touch? Alas!

'Tis Kent's destiny to save the crew of

Mighty Excalibur time and again.

And though his deeds of valour go unsung,

His tales of bravery unknown to all,

So he walks, among mere mortals, alone.
