They have definitely captured these two demographics, at least:

  1. People who see movies in which lots of stuff blows up.
  2. People who see movies that have scores that sound suspiciously like Lord of the Rings.

I really enjoyed the new trailer. I don't go to see many movies in theatres, so I don't know if I'll go see this one, but it's definitely one I'll consider going to see in theatres if the opportunity arrives. Regardless of how it treats Star Trek canon or how it affects the Trek franchise as a whole, it looks like as a move it will be solid. And I'm withholding my judgement on the other two points until actually seeing it.

Hey Fred!

That image of the Kelvin......I swear.....that looks a lot like the design of the original Reaent!!!

I realize the Reaent had two "warp nacelles." The Kelvin has one under the saucer and an engineering section above it. But the similarity nearly knocked me off the chair!

Am I right about this or has time clouded my already clouded memory.

Ok, now having seen the new Enterprise in context, I will return to my original statement:

I will give them the benefit of the doubt when it comes to this latest incarnation.

Cool space station!! New design for Aegis?!

Enterprise_Ground.jpg

For some reason this looks like something straight from Star Trek Online's art gallery.

Enterprise_Shuttlebay.jpg

The guy in brown looks like he's wearing a uniform from the Imperial Navy of Star Wars. And I don't think this is a ship's shuttlebay, from the windows up there it's probably a ground hanger. It actually has a striking resemblance to the Goodyear Air Dock in Akron.

Could be. Also looks like the old Zeppelin Hangars on Lakehurst NAS, in New Jersey.

Isn't there a similar hangar outside of L.A. as well. Or did they take that down a while ago?

They are already messing with Trek cannon. Remember in "A Piece of the Action" when Kirk was clueless on how to drive a car with a clutch? Now we see him as a KID going unsafe velocities and popping the clutch on that (by then) 300 year old car.

Yes! Two blimp hangars still exist at the old Tustin MCAS in Orange County just about 25 miles from LA.

The antique car in "A Piece" probably had a different (and alien, regardless if the Gangstas got the specs from that book) steering/clutch configuration then the 300 year old sports car - and Kirk was older in the TOS episode, so he could have forgot a thing here and there about stick shift since driving the race car.

Then again, maybe that trailer sports car had some updated modifications? Heck, Kirk went airborne and flew out of the car when the vehicle spun out - it sure looked like he didn't know what he was doing just like the gangster car.

Just my canon "argument" speculation. :-P

With all the movies and TV shows ..... it's just such a large franchise, and I just don't see the logic of everything all the Trek incarnations put forward with their various adventures falling into place all orderly and all the time.

Why doesn't anyone complain about First Contact, with the Borg ship going back in time, or any other time travel (we have plenty of them!) snafus throughout the movies and TV shows - you can't tell me those episodes and plots didn't mess with the "precious canon".

I mean, if we do want to go that route - then I consider TOS canon. TNG, DS9, VOY, Enterprise, and the TNG movies are not canon because they all came after the Original Series and therefore messed with what was orginally put forward.

Doesn't make much sense does it?

I just want to have fun when I go and see the new film.

No children were harmed during the rant! :)

I just go bat you-know-what when the canon stuff/argument/this is how they should do it is brought up. Conversely, it drives me out of my ever loving mind and yet other people totally get into it.

I'm all for a good discussion about Trek, I just don't understand the whole nit picky thing, and who cares!

Well said, Kansas!

We must all remember something. This movie is the best hope we have of resurrecting interest in the Trek franchise. In a way, it is for those of us who proudly call ourselves "Trekies." But it's also for those who know absolutely nothing about Star Trek.

We shouldn't allow ourselves to get too hung up on cannon. As a matter of fact, we might start preparing ourselves for some major editing of cannon. For example, it appears the young Spock is in command of the Enterprise and Kirk is picking a fight with him. Where is Captain Pike? Seriously injured? Dead?

That's all speculation but you never know. I'll be disappointed if they kill off Chris Pike but if they do, then new cannon has been established. I'm not going to turn my back on the franchise because of something like that. I may not like it but I'll deal with it and move on.

::tosses in one coin into the pot:: Sorry, I'm short of change.

My biggest concern: Will there be a model kit of the new (old) Enterprise and shuttles, what scale(s), when will it/they become available, how much, and how the heck are the moldmakers going to handle those new complex curves?

Yes, kids, the reimaged Enterprise is growing on me.

She is right! I did my driving test on a stick, then didn't buy a Manuel. I bought one, and it took a while to remember to balance, shift, balance, shift, double clutch when need be, down shift, blah blah. So Kirk lot some brain cells with the Orion! (Sorry Laarell.) It happens!

Purely technical question on nacelle looks.

The nacelle is simply a big coil housing used to create a warp bubble. The nacelle's here have a big glow on the back, making them look more like a futuristic turbine engine.

Poor/ignorant representation of trek canon technology?

Just making it look cool without really thinking about what it does (same as the first option)?

Is there an actual explanation for why the nacelles look like this.

Let's just all hope that the reaction of the youth watching the movie is to see it again, and again, and....

Plus, like you Will Marx, I really want Polar Lights to make a good model of the ship, and the space station, the shuttles, oh, oh, and figures too!!
