So that explains it! I always thought it was too good to be true that these dogs don't shed. I guess the reason we don't see the hair on our Shih Tzu and the two Lhasas is because we cut 90% of it off every few weeks.

Nothing wrong with a cat but the kids were promised a dog. I think it will be good for them to have one too.

Well, I shed, too - but not like my Sheltie used to shed (gak!). Our Tuzi has hair, not fur, and she sheds so little it's not noticeable. But we're wayyyy off topic here.

Yes and no. MOST folks that are allergic to dogs, are not allergic to the Actual hair or fur but to the dander from the skin. The breeds true poodle, not poodle mix, and bichon have shown to be the least of the dander producing, if well bred, as well as the hairless breeds. At least this is what Ive been told and I may be wrong and will stand corrected if needed.

:P

'Course who wants a smelly dog when you can have a graceful and independent kitty?

I couldn't agree more. And, I'm not biased or nuthin'. Nah.

Now getting back to the smelly dog beasts - along the same lines of Will's Border Collie, any one have any input on Australia Sheep/Herd Dogs? At least, I'm assuming the breed I'm looking for is a herd dog.

There is an Austrialian type dog feaured in the Tom Berenger film "Last of the Dogmen" (good movie btw), and I just love it. They have kind of a blue-ish tint to them? Just curious.

These kids aren't looking for grace and independence, they want drooling unconditional love (don't we all?)

Herding dogs make great pets, But they do have to be kept busy or they can be destructive. I raise both Collies and Border Collies. Both are great as well as Australian Shepherd and Corgis. Only trouble is they are ALL heavy shredder's and take some type of occasional brushing unless you like seeing hair tumbleweeds rolling around on your floor.

In this case, the breeder didn't want her anymore so they tossed her out on the side of a road like yesterday's trash.

As far as the folks who threw her away......there is a special place in hell for people like that.

Yes, that is just insane, that breeders would treat dogs as commodities.

As for the hair cutting, this technique does NOT yeild the same positive results for our Bichon Frise that it does for a Shih Tzu or Lhaso.

Because our dog had been staying in a barn with her litter before we got her, and there was saw dust on the ground to keep them from the cold congcrete they were all matted and dirty with saw dust dread locks. So the breeder shaved her before giving her to us. None of our family believed us that we had gotten a cute dog.

Observe the Ugly/Cute contrast.

On the First Family topic, I think that they have the resources to get, maintain and train a big beautiful purebread (Husky as I voted) but agree that the Pit Bull would be a poor choice.
