What breed is your pick for White House Obama Puppy? Forget about global issues or the economy. We have serious business to poll here - the House Puppy.

MSN polled popular and unpopular White House Puppy names that have been submitted. "Abrahound Lincoln" was my personal favorite.

I went with the Boxer; IMO, I think this is the general up and coming breed as America's choice of pet.

Like I said in "Off-topic" a Labradoodle. It's a cute, friendly breed that's also hypo-allergenic. Again, an important factor to consider since the eldest daughter is allergic.

Look at their cute little faces!

I believe the creature will be created in a lab by scientists. The creature will bear the capacity for slight telepathy and will be able to put viewers into a mild hypnosis during the President's statements to the nation. It will also be perfectly bred as to still give that crucial "Awww" factor to those unaffected by the hypnosis. It shall truly be a creature of undiluted evil.

...Or a poodle, whatever. :)

Obama has jokingly said it will be a mutt, like him :)

I wholeheartedly agree that a mutt should inhabit the White House. All joking aside, I believe it will send a message to the nation that shelter animals need good homes, so why not the White House?

::contemplates becoming a shelter animal:::

I picked other to say a Dachshund/Border Collie mix.

From what I understand, the oldest daughter has really bad allergies. So I would pick a Golden Doodle. Silly name I know. But it's a mix between a Golden Retriever and a Standard Poodle. Apparently this breed is hypo-allergenic.

And I really should read other's posts more carefully. I pretty much just repeated what Seiben said. :P

So I was about to vote Corgi, cause I think they're really cute and want one for my next doggy (see my cute bichon in "stay off topic"), but then I saw husky and HAD to vote because huskies are the prettiest dogs ever. I almost impulse adopted a german shepherd/husky mix, most beautiful dog I ever saw.

As for alergies, if the dog lives with the family long term, she should get used to it. My sister has horrible pet dander allergies but she's fine with animals she's been around for a bit.

So, we have "Other" Breeds leading with 8 votes. The Boxer, Shepherd, Retriever are tied at 1, and Pit Bull, Mutt, and Husky are all hanging in with 2 votes.

Now, the thing with the Pit Bull is this would be a controversial breed, what with the reputation as a fighting and attack dog. I *really* don't think the President elect would dare bring a puppy with that sort of rep into the White House (unless he wanted to send a bold and aggressive "message" and commit political suicide at the same time).

As Commander Farrington and Captain Corizon mentioned - the Classic Mutt might be the breed to go for. No better dog is out there then the Classic Mutt. :-)

While I think Obama's going to go the Mutt route, I say working Border Collie. They'll herd the kids about as effectively as the Secret Service

I agree the "Classic Mutt" would be the best choice but.....one of the girls is allergic to dogs. That said, walk through any shelter and you'll find a wide variety of pure breed dogs. Some of them are bound to be hypoallergenic. Shih Tzus, for example, are relatively hypoallergenic and they don't shed.

Most Shih Tzus you see in pictures have long hair and that requires a lot of grooming. I don't think the First Family would have any trouble paying for a groomer but they could always do what we do with ours.....keep the hair short....very short. I prefer the short hair. You can actually see the dog's face and they are really, really cute. Though I must confess, they can rattle the windows with their snoring.

I'm pretty sure you could find a Shih Tzu in a shelter....maybe not a young puppy but a younger adult. We found ours running down a road near our house. Someone dumped her....and we live in a VERY rural area. She's a real sweetie and pretty too! (But man....does she snore!)

So I vote for the Shih Tzu.

I do not understand how people can be so mean and dump a little puppy or little kitten somewhere to just fend for itself. I'm glad you found your Shih Tzu (or did she find you? :-D) and gave her a home.

I couldn't agree more! My husband happened to be taking our Lahsa Apso to the groomer that morning. (Yes, we cut off all of her hair too.) He saw a small dog (10 lbs.) running up the road toward the highway as though her tail was on fire. He stopped and tried to catch her but she was too fast for him. She was almost run over crossing the highway but managed to make it to the other side.

About that time, my husband called me in a panic. The dog seemed to be afraid of men. So I met him across the highway and we spent another fifteen minutes wearing her down before we were able to pick her up. She had been freshly groomed and was wearing a brand new collar but had no ID.

Long story short.....the vet estimated she was between 6 and 8 years old. She had not been spayed and it was obvious she'd had several litters. The vet suspected she was used as a breeder. Turns out, they will breed dogs until the animal is about 6 or 7 years old. In this case, the breeder didn't want her anymore so they tossed her out on the side of a road like yesterday's trash.

Of course, she came into heat two days later.

She has been with us for just over 2 years. She was spayed and had several teeth pulled and has become a treasured member of our family.

As far as the folks who threw her away......there is a special place in hell for people like that.

We have a Shih Tzu, also. She's a champion but you'd never know it the way she plays and rolls in whatever. We keep her hair short, too (they have hair, not fur), and she's really cute. But somehow I don't think the Obamas are Shih Tzu people. Mutt or Labradoodle sounds good.

OK dogs are my passion, living and love as I have 17 of my own. I was a groomer for 26 years until a back injury made me have to quit which still hurts not being able to do what I love to for a living.

I can tell you for FACT!!! Goldendoodles and Labordoodles ARE NOT Hypoallergenic. Some of these dogs shed as much if not more than my collies. IF They want something that is hypoallergenic they need to either stick to a TRUE POODLE OR a Bichon Frise. Both of these breeds have the least amount of skin issues <if bred properly> OR a breed that is hairless and has skin like humans do. That being the Chinese Crested <Hairless> or the Mexican hairless and no they are not the same thing.

A lot of folks are saying dogs dont shed. Thing is Dogs DO shed even the hairless ones. Some dogs do not show the shedding by their hair falling out. Instead their hair just lays in their coats and mats. <shihtzus Terriers poodles Bichons, I could go one but> This can be proven with any dog with fur or hair, Take a comb during shedding season<spring or fall> and take it through their coat. The coat that comes out, if not matted, is shedding coat. All dogs change their coats twice a year. Most folks do not see it, as most here, They keep their dogs groomed and/ or cut short. Have questions dont hesitate to ask.

Also Getting a cat may be better. The Cornish Rex or hairless Sphynx are the best choices.

This coming from an expert that deals with animals 100 % of the time and has seen several folks come into the vet clinic that HAVE allergies and the pets they have.

So that explains it! I always thought it was too good to be true that these dogs don't shed. I guess the reason we don't see the hair on our Shih Tzu and the two Lhasas is because we cut 90% of it off every few weeks.

Nothing wrong with a cat but the kids were promised a dog. I think it will be good for them to have one too.
