PERSONAL INFORMATION:

Ayumu Kasuga lived a simple life on Earth. Not much is known about her family, but she grew up in a happy life all over Japan. Born in Wakayama, Kasuga went to elementary school in Kobe and moved to Osaka for a few years before moving to Tokyo to attend high school. Students expecting her to act like the stereotypical Osakan—loud, exuberant and fond of bawdy jokes—chose for her the nickname "Osaka", although Ayumu's behaviour could not be more different.

Ayumu considers herself "slow" and "spacey" - but she lacks the energy or motivation to dispute it. The nickname sticks so well she is called 'Osaka' by teachers and even in the class roster, to the point that no one even remembers her real name. Osaka mentions that she lived in Kobe when she was in elementary school and was born in Wakayama. Friends who don't know where Wakayama is, tells Ayumu to "just be Osaka".

Ayumu struggled through high school, and performed poorly in tests and exams. She also had a tendancy to nod off in class. Osaka often acts like a "space cadet": slow, inattentive, and stuck in her own world. Although she seems slow and easily distracted, she merely has a mind that works quite differently from that of most people. This makes her prone to daydreaming, absent-mindedness, and non-sequiturs, but it also makes her unusually good at answering certain types of riddles.

But while some people assume that she lacks focus, the truth is that in quite a few cases, Osaka is really a little too focused. She tends to focus so intently that the rest of the world simply disappears, causing her to often miss what's going on around her . Osaka always keeps a quiet, accessible mood. It's extremely rare to catch her in a fit of anger or losing control. Osaka has been known to use the phrase "O-ha!" (short for おはよう ohayou, "good morning"), which was popularized by Shingo Katori of the pop group SMAP, as an example of how "normal" Japanese people talk. This is not a correct assumption.

At the same time, Osaka has a habit of being able to point out obvious things nobody else seems to notice, and has surprising levels of knowledge on unexpected topics such as marine biology and obscure kanji. However, her sense of humour is sometimes unusually morbid. On their first trip to a friend's summer home, Osaka proposed telling a scary story where all of her friends are murdered one by one, only to reveal that in the end, she was the one who killed them all.

She also suggested placing cat corpses inside a cafe as a cumulation of the other girls ideas for their second-year Culture Festival, which included a haunted house, a café, and stuffed animals. She is also easily amused by things that most people would consider bizarre. During the Sports Festival, she made a big deal out of running the obstacle course because she thought the event of sticking her face in flour to get a candy was funny and had a giggle fit when she got there, and well afterwards, her face still covered in flour. She also likes to run outside and play in typhoons, yet is easily spooked by thunder. Osaka's real given name means 'to walk' or 'to go on foot' and her surname means 'spring day.'

Originally, Osaka intended to enrol in university for a teaching degree on the advice of a close friend, but quickly found that it wasn't for her. Packing her bags, she headed west to San Francisco and enrolled in Starfleet Academy in the Helm and Navigational program under the prestigious guidance of Professor Ryan. Minoring in Tactical, Osaka performed well in the program and graduated four years later. With Ryan's recommendation, Osaka applied to and was accepted to the Republic as a beta shift helmsman.

Under the guidance of Lieutenant Commander Hans Seiben, Republic's chief helm/tactical officer, Osaka quickly familiarised herself with the Republic and its control and flight. On stardate 10811.03, Osaka was transferred to the Alpha shift as Tactical/Helm, replacing the departing Hans Seiben who accepted a teaching role in Starfleet Academy. It is expected that Osaka will do well in this regard.

Ayumu served with distinction on the Republic for two years, but got into legal trouble while on vacation on a planet when she accidentally piloted her shuttle into a flock of rare birds on a beach. Nearly executed for her crimes (the birds were considered sacred to the local populace), Ayumu was beamed back to the Republic just seconds before the execution was to be carried out.

Upon arrival back to the Republic, Ayumu was demoted to ensign and spent time in the brig before returning to normal duty. On January of 2385, Ayumu was promoted back to her original rank of Lieutenant for valourious service in the two years that followed since.

Ayumu, along with the rest of her crew was transferred to the newly commissioned Sovereign class USS Republic (NCC-1371-E) as the Chief Operations and Helm Officer after the decommissioning of the Galaxy-class USS Republic D, which was damaged beyond repair in a prior mission.

In the years since Ayumu had continued to  perform her role on the Republic diligently and was involved in many missions with the Republic, including infiltrating a  laboratory filled with mutated humans, helping stop a gang of interstellar smugglers, and making contact with a sentient being in a remote part of space.

However in 2388, Ayumu had acted against orders and proceeded through a restricted area housing a hostile sentient alien species past the safe limit of speed at high warp and potentially causing an unknown myriad of consequences, not the least of which potential backlash from said alien species after Republic's command promised not to harm them.

Ayumu was charged with insubordination, careless piloting in a restricted area, disobeying direct orders amongst other charges and was tried at the starbase nearest the location of the incident.  Facing a potential 15-20 year prison sentence at the Federation Penitentiary in New Zealand, Ayumu's sentence was commuted due in part to her attorney and now former Commanding Officer.

For her actions, Ayumu was instead given an honourable discharge from Starfleet with no prison sentence to be served.  After the incident, Ayumu returned to Earth to mentally and physically recover.  Initially returning back to Japan, catching up with old friends there she is eager to one day regain her piloting certification to perhaps pursue a helm or navigational role for a civilian freighter or passenger company.

Likes: Splitting chopsticks neatly, telling horror stories and jokes, pointless trivia, playing the recorder, typhoons.

Dislikes: Carbonated beverages, spicy food, escalators, turbo lifts, thunder
