Name the Captain's New Ship

35 posts in this topic

Ok guys,

Let's name the new Captain's ship of Sky Harbor Aegis!! Post your suggestions for a name here and then in a few weeks I'll pick the top five I like the best and we'll do a poll on them. The name with the highest number of votes will become the name of the new Captain's ship for Sky Harbor Aegis. So get those creative processes going and come up with some good names!!

Thanks!

Muon

I'm not sure if you mean the captain's personal ship or a new support ship for the station, so I'll throw out ideas for both:

Support Ship - I've always been partial to names connected to Aegis' spot in Greek mythology, so:

USS Athena

USS Hector

USS Pallas

USS Chimera (Medusa didn't sound right as a ship name - but a good call sign, perhaps?)

USS Perseus (an Oberth-class used before, but destroyed)

Captain's Personal Ship (shuttle or otherwise) - Something Ferengi-sounding seemed appropriate:

Bonanza

Jackpot

Affluence

Bounty (which has a Terran precedent)

I checked and it seems the name Enterprise has been taken.

Just don't name it after Drankum. He already owns enough of the Quadrant.

Ok, seeing as I didn't know there is going to be a new captains ship I really need to get my rear in gear and read the last mission log.

I am gonna say something with mythology (example: Artimis, Ra, Centaur, Pan, ext), or something with Muons name in it, like Quarky Warky's Flying Munchkin.

USS Athena USS Hector USS Pallas USS Chimera USS Perseus

These names are all strong and very fitting.

Since Aegis is the shield I thought maybe the support ship would be the sword, but there is no specific name for the sword that Perseus used to cut off Medusa's head.

Instead, I'm offering up the word for sword:

USS Machaera

OOoooooo, good names so far. Keep em coming!!

Just to clarify, this will be a new ship for the Captain but can also be used as a support ship for missions and such.

Thanks!!

If you're going toward mythological names, just FYI that the Manticore has the following support craft (captain's yacht, shuttles, fighters, etc.):

Wyvern

Griffin

Chimera

Cerberus

As you can see, I like the mythological names, they fit the ships well, so enjoy. Oh and here's a contribution for yours

USS Indigestible (Undefinable? Inconceivable?)

So in order to use those names...Aegis would need to eliminate the current craft bearing them. Hmmm...

All right. Continuing with the Greek mythology theme of the Aegis and it's ship names, here are some of my own suggestions:

USS Artemis

USS Pegasus (there was one in TNG, but it was destroyed) and the

USS Bellerophon

What class is the ship?

I like the sword name (I had suggested Espada when Aegis got it's original support ship). But, the main Greek weapon was the spear so how about...

USS Dory or Doru.

I also like Sorehl's list. I wouldn't mind seeing a Perseus-A. I have some other Greek mythos names but I wouldn't want to name a Nova class after on of the Titans or such.

It was briefly mentioned that the support ship for Starbase 409 (the old Aegis station) is the Pegasus, but that's not been heavily established.

Why don't we just rename it the USS Pandora's Box

I would add:

Daedalus (minus the USS, since we are an allied force) - Daedalus comes from the Greek Daidalos, meaning "cunning worker"

Pendragon - meaning "leader of leaders;" a title assumed by ancient British chiefs when called to lead other chiefs.

::sneaks in:: I got clearance from the Chief Quark to post an idea. ;-)

The USS Mercury (Roman god of commerce, profit and trade) for the ship. And Casino Run for a possible Captains Yacht.

In keeping with that Ferengi profit feel.

USS Crockett, Steamrunner

USS Cape Horn, Steamrunner

USS Cavendish, Nova

USS Saladin, Excelsior

One impression I have of the old Greek mythos is that Aegis is the shield of Zeus, but Zeus seldom left Olympus, but rather instead leant the aspects of Aegis and the lightning bolt to Athena. This got me looking for Athena related themes. From Wiki...

Athena's epithets include Άτρυτώνη, Atrytone (= the unwearying), Παρθένος, Parthénos (= virgin), and Ή Πρόμαχος, Promachos (the First Fighter, i. e. she who fights in front).

In poetry from Homer, an oral tradition of the eighth or seventh century BC, onward, Athena's most common epithet is glaukopis (γλαυκώπις), which usually is translated as, bright-eyed or with gleaming eyes.[22] The word is a combination of glaukos (γλαύκος, meaning gleaming, silvery, and later, bluish-green or gray) and ops (ώψ, eye, or sometimes, face). It is interesting to note that glaux (γλαύξ, "owl") is from the same root, presumably because of the bird's own distinctive eyes. The bird which sees well in the night is closely associated with the goddess of wisdom: in archaic images, Athena is frequently depicted with an owl perched on her head. The olive tree is likewise sacred to her. In earlier times, Athena may well have been a bird goddess, similar to the unknown goddess depicted with owls, wings, and bird talons on the Burney relief, a Mesopotamian terracotta relief of the early second millennium BC.[citation needed]

Other epithets include: Aethyta under which she was worshiped in Megara.[23] The word aithyia (αίθυια) signifies a diver, and figuratively, a ship, so the name must reference Athena teaching the art of shipbuilding or navigation.

Aethyta has a lot of the correct associations, but the word is too obscure to be ideal. Atrytone would also be rather obscure names. Athena might be more recognizable. Parthenon seems like a viable option. (USS Virgin?) If anyone asked Joy, she would try to discourage Promachos, the notion of being first to fight.

I'm not sure if the USS should or should not be dropped as Aegis is an allied station. I would lean towards not.

The difficulty of this is that I tend to choose the name per the ship type.

I am not going to choose USS Heracles for a Nova class surveyor nor will I recommend USS Sally Ride for a Prometheus class battle-cruiser.

As for my recomendations:

USS Cooper - (Gordo Cooper, Mercury astronaut)

For more navy-esque names I prefer the Brits for their class:

USS Repulse

USS Renown

USS Resolution

USS Ardent

USS Adamant

...it could go on and on

And if it does get named USS Rick Astley I swear by all that is holy that I will put a torpedo right through the the starboard nacelle. I would gladly accept the court marshal for that.

in terms of support ships, maybe go with some rich people in history... my order of names in preference would be:

1. Rockefeller

2. Croesus (credited with developing currency and coinage)

3. Gint (of course the first grand nagus must be mentioned...)

4. Carnegie-Mellon (i'd list them separately, but PBS keeps listing them together...)
