Shore Leave 2009 - Baltimore

Ahhhh, Maryland...where we will eat an old shoe if you pour Old Bay Seasoning on it and call it a crab.

Something happens when you cross the border into MD. The cities are designed to frustrate you. Silver Spring, Baltimore, and Rockville remain in the top five of my least favorite cities to drive in...and I've driven in NYC and Boston quite a bit! Now that I think about it, PA cities are pretty similar in terms of frustration, perhaps they had the same designer.

I would venture that DC is more frustrating for driving than all three that you've mentioned -- I firmly believe L'Enfant was on some kind of hallucinogenic when he designed it. We were actually really pleasantly surprised when we moved down to Silver Spring from New Jersey and discovered that street signs are actually marked in advance in this state, which is something New Joysians are too tough for or something.

But I suppose I'm biased. ;)

Signs, yes, logic, no. I swear I was at an intersection in Silver Spring once where there was a no straight (!), left, or right sign all at one intersection. On that day, I decided that my friends were just going to have to use the orange line. On that note, why does the DC Metro always use the world's smallest signs? You think they'd actually like to turn a profit for once.

Perhaps its that in states like NY/NJ you just expect frustration and when you discover you're not pulling your hair out, you feel good about yourself. When you think of Maryland, you think of driving through Delaware or the Eastern Shore.

PA roads are undoubtedly some of the worst in the frakkin' world. PA's the only place where they take your property by eminent domain to do absolutely nothing at all with.

Those of you who are aspiring writers might want to consider taking Ann Crispin's writing workshop, but be forewarned that she is very serious about her craft and concerned for new writers (helpful). If you take her workshop be prepared to work your tail off all weekend, take copious notes, and maybe miss most of the get-togethers with your STSF friends.

On the up side, I've taken her class three times and I know several others who have taken it. The workshop is well worth it.

Yes and yes. I was a first time workshop-ee from last year, and the class rocked out with practical writing tips, even though I did not agree with A. C's views (we're too reactionary with our writing) on RPG/simming fiction writers. The four almost five hours at a stretch class, two days in a row, can seriously muck up any other plans you might have. As the Commander said, make note.

The unplanned scramble to grab a new PC knocked me outta the travel moola box, but we'll see. I'll have a definite attending answer within the next few days.

Wait...I was promised dancing stormtroopers!

Oh, you know they will be there - in full battle array complete with working comm systems under their helmets. Straight out of SW they are!

Unfortunately I have to tell y'all that I'll miss SL this year. The family has scheduled a reunion in MT and their reunions are few and far between. I'm sure you'll have oodles of fun.

Kansas - hug Jason for me!!! Wo0t, Boo-yeah, and all that.

Just a reminder that I am building a ShoreLeave mailstring. Let me know your e-mail address if you are coming to the event and want to know what we may try to accomplish as a group, such as... drink, or look at the strangely dressed people who are NOT part of our group, or drink (What? You don't like to stay hydrated?)

Send the notice to me at [email protected]

I recently sent out an e-mail to those I had already heard from, so if you don't remember if you had already sent me your address and if you didn't get an e-mail from me in the past 1-2 weeks about this, send it along. (and if you don't remember if you sent me your address and you don't remember getting an e-mail from me recently and you ARE on my list, I think you are a bit TOO hydrated)

Post Edit: Found the owner of the SL photos.

Emailed Photoworks to get them transferred.

Nevermind. ;)

Hi all. Have fun in MD. (Or NY.)

PA is the ninth circle of hell. (Specifically Scranton. But I digress, that is a SL Road Trip story for another time.)

I'm going back to real life now. ;)

Bye for now. That is unless you want your photos back. Then talk later or whatever the kids are saying now a days. o.O

Have fun all.

Well this is frustrating.

I'm in Maryland, not far from Baltimore.

The problem is...I work two of the three days and don't have a car.

So .... how'd it go? Details guys, details. :-P

Anyone hear through the fan grapevine if anyone dropped out at the last minute? I recall word came on down the line that one of the scheduled writers bailed the day of for Shoreleave 2008.

The guest list had the actor (no recall on the name) who played as Nero's 2nd in Command, Ayel, in the 2009 film making an appearance - anyone happen to pop in?

Was there a swarm of Stargate costumed fans running about this year? Last year was unbelievable with the amount of Stargaters: felt almost like I dropped througn a Gate. Not a bad thing mind, but definite Stargate "whoa, there goes another one!" overload.

With the success of the 2009 film, was there more of a Star Trek convention presence as opposed to the generic Sci fi convention atmosphere and all that?
