"Gossip and Solar Flares"

Dear Elements, Sar'vek loved Talon's gossip mill. It was entertaining in the least; best of all was when it turned out to be true. But which parts were juicier?

There were musings on why the executive officer went joy-riding off around a nebula, for one thing. Surely he was trying to impress some powerful scientist-sponsor he'd met on ch'Rihan, or perhaps he'd suddenly become a daredevil sort, and "plasma-surfing" was the new thrill-ride. Frankly, she couldn't imagine why anyio sane would want to go "surfing" on spatial phenomenon, but she'd been accused of being the tight-laced io occasionally, so who was she to critique?

More entertaining theories surrounded the idea that the close-range scans were some sort of... recompensation to Science for Sar'vek having to deal with N'Dak the Younger on a daily basis. While the Rihan woman rather doubted the theory, if the scans really were an offering to Science, Sar'vek as chief goddess of the labs was quite appeased. Of course, she suspected that the elder one would never see a need to "compensate" for his brother -- or rather, the perception of his brother among the crew.

Lately, the daise' of science had actually been rather surprised by the younger N'Dak. After a particularly surprising day a month or so prior, she'd come in to Science with a ongoingly bad h'Eadache. To her surprise, Sar'vek had found that somebody had apparently completed the day-to-day paperwork she was usually stuck with. On a hunch, Sar'vek started paying a little bit closer attention to Issaha's work, pleasantly surprised with the results -- contrary to nasty rumor, he really did have a certain intelligence about him, and while she still did na exactly trust the boy, he was contributing to her department.

But rumors would always fly, despite all evidence. The more fun ones surrounded t'Ditsy's presence on the RAC. What in hells she was doing on there was anyio's guess... but then again, au had to either be insane or a complete idiot to go off hrrau a mission to a plasma flare without a scientist -- Sar'vek personally suspected J'stal was both. That, and the fact she was clearly smitten with any male that breathed (and probably a few that didn't), explained her away better than any of the gossip.

She did have to admit that the scans they brought back were... extremely valuable. Worth going bald for, certainly -- they'd managed to explain quite a few of the gas-distribution trends that she'd noticed in the phenomenon. The closer looks at the radiation, too, were useful in determining exactly how much solar wind the star was tossing around with each of these. Since Korvalis was spinning the flares much more commonly than they had in the past, the importance to nearby interstellar travel was immeasurable. And on a diplomatic note, well, they could always try to sell or trade the data to their "friends" in the Federation.

T'Jhiin smiled to herself. For the moment, life was menkha. After all, she had excellent science things to geek over -- and she did na even have to go bald for them.

Quite menkha.
