Get it together

"Get it together"

Star Date 50808.25

A few weeks ago

Deep Space 9 was a large place. People and aliens jostled for position as they progressed through the facility's massive halls. But despite the crowds, and looks of chaos, it wasn't. People waited and let others pass and stopped at junctions to let people through going left or right. It wasn't like this back in Osaka. Nobody stops for anybody there. But despite the stereotypes, Kasuga did. The short, browned haired Kasuga Ayumu looked up at the departures board. Her new ship, the USS Republic was currently docked at the far end. Looking at the sign, she could see she didn't have much time to reach there before the ship departs for a long mission in the Gamma Quadrant.

Kasuga held her head in frustration. "Waa. I'll be away from home for so long" she lamented to herself. While it was true that Kasuga did travel to much of Japan and the US West Coast, that was pretty much the extent of her travels abroad. She hadn't even left the Solar System. But a curiousity and a suggestion from a friend landed her in Starfleet Academy four years prior. It was a hard struggle to get by, but here she was, carrying her luggage through DS9's departure terminal with her shiny gold ensign's pip proudly affixed to her collar. It was still shiny from her recent graduation last week.

Eventually, Kasuga reached the end of the terminal where the Republic was waiting. She felt tired having cross the entire terminal to reach the ship. She trudged slowly into the ship whilst the supply shuttles were finishing the resupply of the giant ship outside. A lone crewman was on hand to greet Kasuga and take her to her quarters. She was still tired from all that walking. Not surprisingly, since she was never really too athletic. It didn't take long for her to unpack what little she had, and rested for the rest of the night.

"So..." continued Hans, "that's how you do the famous 'Picard maneuver.' You never know when you might need it" Kasuga nodded as hans closed the simulation. For the past few weeks, she was working Hans Seiben who help familiarise herself with the Republic's controls and handling. Hans often stayed past his duty time to help the young beta shift pilot become familiar with the way the ship handles. "Now, we'll move onto some tactical elements as well, as that's also going to be part of your assigned duties too. I'll set up some more simulated battle runs for you to go through"

"Okay" Kasuga said simply, as she tried to absorb everything. Hans went slow enough for her to remember how everything operates, but she still found it difficult to remember every little thing. She hoped that she would stay focused and become a good pilot like Hans. Performing admirably in the tactical simulations, the two decided to call it a day. "There you have it, ensign. You know now as much about the navigational and tactical controls of the ship as I do. I may even go as far in saying that you're ready for the Alpha shift. I'm sure you'll get an opportunity to do so soon"

"Thanks, sir" said Kasuga simply and went to her quarters. Along the way, she tried to remember everything Hans taught her. "I'll need to get it together if I want to ever work the Alpha shift. Get it together... get it together..." she repeated to herself. Still repeating her mantra as she entered the messhall, she didn't see the 'Wet Floor' sign and promptly tripped over it spilling her food. Chuckling nervously, the young ensign replaced the sign and re-ordered her food. She hoped nobody was looking. Definately get it together, she thought to herself and returned to her quarters to rest and reflect on her busy day.
