“Bonds” – Part III of IV

Log Series Part IV

Jolt sat straight up in his sleeping bag. Something was wrong, and he knew it. He glanced over and saw that Slick was not there in his sleeping bag, and that was not right.

Pulling on shoes, Jolt knew that something serious was afoot, and Slick was in serious danger. He bolted out of his tent, instantly soaked through by the rain. Slick had head off towards the river, so that’s where Jolt went, running as fast as his legs would carry him through the forest.

Twice he slipped on wet leaves, and twice he pulled himself up, muddy, but not broken. He continued forward.

Racing forward, he saw the river ahead of him. He didn’t ask himself where his brother could be, he could feel it in him, he knew exactly where.

Jolt never slowed, and he arched forward, diving straight into the river. Coming up for breath, he began pulling one arm over the other, swimming out towards the center of the water, while it pushed him downstream at an extraordinary rate.

Swimming out, Jolt knew his brother was right around him. He felt it all throughout him; it was just a matter of locating exactly where. He looked to his right, and saw the body. It bobbed upwards, and then slid back down.

Jolt moved as fast as he could, managing to only miss Slick’s body as it moved by. He swam and swam, desperation creeping into his mind. There was no way he would let his brother drown, though it might have been to late for that he knew.

Pulling all of his strength together, Jolt grabbed Slick’s shirt, and pulled him towards the shoreline. The water fought him, and the weight of his brother tried to drag him back, but Jolt moved forward, slowly but surely.

The shoreline was muddy, and Jolt drug his brother onto it. Slick lay on his back, not showing any signs of life.

A lightning flashed revealed a white face on the body of Slick. Jolt leaned over, and he shook his brother.

“Slick! Slick! Wake up Slick!” he screamed. Tears began to flow freely as he realized Slick wasn’t with him.

He slammed his fists down on Slick’s chest, and nothing happened.
