Sorehl,

Don't forget to add a Panda! I'm also thinking that, while I'm not assigned to the Red Star, and the fact that the 'Experience' is closing, one of their pictures might work.

By the way, why is DS9 in the image, if we are just focused on STSF? I would just stick to the sims we have here.

I assumed it was just in there for scale.

Ahhh, then again, you have the ISS on there, so that's good for scale. I just think DS9 is so big, it takes over the image a bit. I love that there are no two ships in the forum that are the same class, a sweet coincidence! By the way, back in 2001, when some of us were simming in SFOL, I had a design put onto a tuxedo vest for a ShoreLeave gathering. That design was the fleet at that time and I found the picture. Here's something for you old farts to spark your memories!

Well, this artwork was originally developed as a scaling tool in developing the specs for Sky Harbor Aegis and Camelot Station, so DS9 is the very bottom layer of the bitmap I started with. It would take more work to remove it than I'd be willing to put in, but I welcome anyone who's interested to take a crack. Have at it. With DS9 gone, perhaps Talon would fit in the picture.

One of the things it actually demonstrated was that DS9 is scaled WAY bigger than the number of decks they claim it has. The central core from Ops to the bottom of the fusion reactors is only about 42 decks if you count the windows and estimate from the cutaway in the DS9 Tech Manual. That's the same number as a Galaxy-class and yet the DS9 central core is made to look twice as tall as the Enterprise. That whole uppermost bubble is only supposed to be one deck, you can confirm this by noticing the window in Sisko's office, as well as the circular windows that line Ops. So scaling even among the canon stuff is tricky. Aegis and Camelot are scaled against the ships.

I would recomend Dan Carlson's work on Starship and Station size comparisons. I would post one of his charts here but I am afraid it might be a bit too big.

Thanks Admiral. The picture really brought back memories.....and made me feel like an antique at the same time. :)

Now, with regard to DS9 being represented in the current incarnation of the STSF ships? I myself just picture all the non canon ships/stations docked around the canon station, awaiting new orders. The SFOL fleet representation is also very nice, btw.

The USS Illustrator? I have to ask: was this sim crewed by people who worked as Illustrators in real life?

The USS Federation? I'm no expert on the ship classes, but most of the time I can eyeball a design and recognize a ship. But, I do not recognize that ship class of the Federation. Looks like the saucer section is a smaller Prometheus design and attached to the main hull and nacelle design that looks like a blunt Galaxy class design?

And the Delta space station reminds me of the design of the Regula One station from Trek 2, although if I recall, Regula only sported one tower.

Even when I served on Illustrator I'd always wondered where the name did come from. I think the one time CO Captain Kai worked for some technical magazine but he wasn't the original Captain and not sure if he was an illustrator or writer. A9 would know more, seeing that me and Kai did not get along well. I should note that Illustrator wasn't originally a Prometheus Class ship. The first version was a Nebula with 4 nacelles. Then it became an Ambassador (I think) with 4 nacelles. Then I created a class for the Illustrator-B and did a few crude drawings of a Liberator class. That one looked like the Loknar class from the old FASA RPG but...again, with 4 nacelles and could separate diagonally into two mirror image ships somewhat like the Prometheus. I assume though that the Prometheus class was finally selected as the true Illustrator-B at some point after I left the sim.

But all that happened well into the time frame that Aegis was around. ::pokes A9 for forgetting it::

The Federation is from a fan designed ship that you can still find in a few places around the net. Not sure who created it or the class name.

I'd forgotten what DSD1 looked like. That's when the Delta Quadrant was a really lonely place and it was whispered that the Command Staff was cursed (They disappeared with alarming frequency). So nice to see it again.

You're missing the regayoV, A9. Or was she decommissioned (As per SFOL threat of copyright infringement lawsuit nerves) at this point?

I remember those rumors! :) I think there may have been some truth to them.

Trust me, I am no artist, so don't blame me for missing some stations or ships at the time (the image was from 2001), I just saved the picture and put it on my tux vest. As for the Illustrator, yes, that was the ship I started on, as a green Ensign and worked my way through the Security dept - I had my own personalized biobed, I kept getting hurt on away missions - and from CSEC to TAC to XO. I was also XO of Excalibur for awhile at the same time as XO on Strator, but I had to give up Excal when I started Manticore. Eventually, I stepped down from Illustrator, too. It was a very hard decision to leave that ship! (and I think it was always Ambassador class until it became Prometheus)

Aye, there was, at least for my first couple of months. It was still a very fun sim, though. I'm all nostalgic for it now.

The only pic I remember of the pre-refit Illustrator was of the back with the 4 nacelles and it looked like a Nebula to me. But now I'm remembering when it went to the version with 2 nacelles on the back and 2 coming off the saucer section that this version wasn't a new one but a massive refit. So, the Prometheus was actually Illustrator-A, not B.

One day I should drag a few old computers outta mothballs and see if I can find a lot of those old pics.

The Illustrator was definitely NEVER a Nebula Class. Manticore was the first Nebula in SFOL/STSF.

No one's quite sure exactly how big the ships are in the new TOS movie. But rule of thumb from the modders the ST:Bridge Commander filefront site is about the same size as normal TOS ships.

Yeah there is a lot of speculation from movie sources...and I take it Game Modelers the size of the "New" NCC-1701 will be.

One can only hope it will be all settled in the next movie, some deck reference..how many meters in length she is...now that would be the kicker there. Long way off before then. So guess one has to make up there own minds!

The fine folks at Ex Astris Scientia tell us the following:

Like millions of other fans, I have seen "Star Trek (2009)". And like pretty much everyone else who cares about starship design I was totally convinced that the new ship has to be about the same size as the original Enterprise or the Enterprise refit from the Prime Universe: around 300 meters long...

but the more or less official Enterprise Tour comes up with an overall length of as much as 2500ft (762m) for the new Enterprise. The Society of Digital Artists says that the length is 2357ft (718m). And Gizmodo Blog claims that the ship is 2379.75 feet (725.35 meters) long. And because it's apparently so much fun, the blog demonstrates how well the extremely oversized ship performs compared to other sci-fi franchises, at least size-wise. Finally, we have an extra feature on the Blu-ray disc that confirms the length of the new ship to be 2379.75 feet.
