Is there a limit to the sims you can join?

Is there a limit to the number of sims you can join after graduating from the acadamy?

There is no hard and fast limit to the number of advanced sims you can join (although it's not a good idea to join two that meet at the same time).  Whether you can be EFFECTIVE in all those sims is another matter.

The record so far is 3 at a time.

Hey there,

Although you can join as many as you want, I would recommend only playing in one or two to start with.  Once you're sure you can manage one or two, then consider joining others.  Too often new players kill themselves joining too many sims and end up quitting altogether. :) I found that two was my limit for me to be an effective player and even then that can be difficult. :)

::remembering when she didn't have a life and was on . . . er . . . 6 ships. :dead:  And, yes - 6 was far too many to keep up with, write logs, etc.

Simming isn't just a matter of coming each week, it's a matter of quality participation, interaction with your crew members IC (and occasionally OOC), and planning what might give the sim an interesting twist, checking with your dept chief and command staff, etc.  One sim is plenty for a novice.  With experience you might consider branching out with a totally different character on another sim.

Just thoughts.

As many as 7, as few as 1. As has already been stated, the fewer the better to be truly effective. I found I got confused on who I was writing logs for, what character was involved in what subplots...and when you show up to a sim in the wrong uniform (assuming you remember to wear one) you know its time to scale back.

In the beginning I suggest one, two at the outside depending on how busy you are outside of simming. (Work, school, activities) Once you have an idea of how things go with simming, log writing, etc, then you can add more if you feel you have the time and energy.

There is definitely no award for the most sims. And if you do fewer with quality you will go farther.

I know several people sim on the Hood (Tuesdays at 8 PST) and the Qob-Lakota (immediately following at 9 PST) - but that's just too much time without a trip to the bathroom!!

Hey there,

The exact answer is no. You can join as many as you wish. However, as I've recently said to folks asking for an additional assignment...

"Please keep in mind that you should not take on too many games where you cannot devote the proper time each requires. Simming often requires more than just an hour per week. Reading e-mail, responding to crew discussion and writing logs can sometimes take an additional one to two hours per week. Please keep this in mind when making additional posting requests.".

Yes I started out at one and several months ago joined one more.  I figured it would be fun.  But unfortunetly it's harder then it seems.  I offten read the chat log at least twice before both of my sims to get my barrings strait.  And if thats odd try writing logs.  I tell you its hard.  And while 3,4 or 5 sims is doable it's deffinetly not enjoyable.  And thats what simming is all about. Our common love of trek and our atempt to live out that love in a chat room.  If you dont enjoy a sim you need to drop it.  Many people think they can ride it out but inturn that stuborness to quit offten destroys them and ruins their simming career.  The second you relize you cant remeber something big that happend in a sim (I.e. character leaveing, captain missing) you know you have to much on you plate.

Hmm... maybe one is too many for me, then.  I forget stuff that is happening in the sim all the time!  Thank goodness for PM's!  I can always send a quick message to a friend in the sim, "Hey?  Did we already arrive at the planet last week, or are we still on route?"  or "Hey?  Do you happen to remember where I was?"

Yes, you were scrubbing out the interior of the Photon Torpedo tubes... oops, did I press THAT button!?

Okay, so maybe he wasn't talking about me when he said "friend."

Yup, even GMs forget too - and they're the ones who write the scripts!!

Uh, there was once a small group of us that did three in a row on Tuesdays...  THAT was sick.  But fun.

Anyway, as everyone above has already said, each of us has a limit on the number of sims we can play on effectively.  My limit was three before I was hosting, and about two and a half after.  (The person who has had me on the "half" sim can tell you how much I suck.  In fact, I'd call it an "eighth" rather than a full half.)

So to repeat everyone else:  Start on one, get your feet wet, then try another and see how it goes.  Some people can keep plots straight on more, but I sure can't.  Some people are happy playing on just one ship forever.  It's better for everyone if you are actively participating and logging on fewer ships than spreading yourself too thin on more.

And... there's nothing wrong with hanging out and *watching* your buddies' sims when you have free time and want to feel the love.  :)

Yes heading to a sim and watching it in action is one of the best things to do, when it's taking an additional sim or just starting fresh from the academy.  All the sims here play at different speeds, if all of the ships were given the same plot several would finish far ahead of the others.  And that in its self is a good thing.  It's hard for a person who likes sims that go at an agresive, fast pace and get through plot quickly to play a slower ship that takes more time.

I my self prefer the slower sims.  While there's nothing wrong with ships that get done with plots faster I realy like being able to actually read and understand a conversation between two people on other sides of the ship.

So in retrospect visiting a sim once or twice before you make the choice to join is one of teh most important things you can do.  Not only do you begin to familiarize with the crew, you get a feel for how the sim is played every week.

Im with you there Kroells. I also like slower sims but I don't think its a matter of how fast the people type to the room. I just got that from what you wrote. A sim can have a fast room where it would be impossible to keep track of everyone else's conversations, yet the plot moves a slow pace. Usually this is because there is a lot of character development going on during the plot. Something that I think makes the sim more realistic and fun.

Such as my sim, Republic :)
