First graduate from the academies!

Second, while in the academy work on the character bio you want to play. That can help you when you're in the academy.

How do I make a bio and how do you graduate?   ???

There is no set format for a bio and none are needed or used in the training sims.  As far as the Advanced Sims, every one has different needs or requirements and you don't have to worry about that until you graduate.

As far as graduation and/or gameplay in the academies, have you read the "How To Sim" section of this website?  That is your first step.  The next thing you do is to look at the schedule and show up, in the startrek.com/community/chat.asp's Holodeck chat room and just watch an academy.  I think you are worrying too much about something that is relatively easy to understand, just go and experience it.  You don't have to prepare for it in any way (besides being a Star Trek fan and coming into the room to have some fun!)

Enjoy!

And even this isn't enforced.

I've heard of the Olsen Twins Countdown site.  Do they have a chatroom now?

First graduate from the acadamy which may take a while (took me seven times) but is very helpfull for preparing for the advanced sims. After you graduate you should write a biography for your new character. Bio writing is lot of fun after you get a hang of it and there are many people on the site who will be glad to help you with it if needed ( me included I am posted on 2 advanced sims with each sim having a completly diffrent charcter and bio. Anyway good luck in the acadamy!

Attend academies. Good suggestion is to do academies under different GMs, it will give you a good chance to see how different games are run. Go to advanced sims and watch (quietly). This will give you a chance to see the different sims and where you might fit in, as well as giving you some good insight into how the game is played. Different sims have different paces and flavors, so watch the ones you think you might be interested in. Try not to choose a sim based soley on its time-you may find that your desired character would not be a good fit, or that you don't like the style of play.

Create a rough sketch of your character. Play that character in the academy, and see how it fits. As you watch the advanced sims, you can see where you might want to change something, or how well a character might mesh in a particular sim. I don't reccommend creating a huge backstory, until you get to your new sim and see if it will work.

Some of the most fun and memorable characters I have created were not something I ever expected. They were the characters I created to fill a need on a ship or for something special, and they gained a life of their own, with stories I never expected. Ziggy was one....

The other thing is to read up on things like the ST Encyclopedia, so that when you have the need to reach in the back of your brain for some technical mumbo jumbo, you'll have it... and more importantly, when someone throws it out there, you'll know what THEY mean. :)

Good luck and welcome!!  :)
